    15 years ago i built this and used a CD spindl for reflector and holder. It worked great! The first and one of the best antenna i built. Sorry for my english. ;)

      My first antenna that i built myself was a cantenna. Cantenna works perfect but i will try biquad too. It is a good thing trying different type of antennas :)

    Impressed by efficiency of build, did exactly the same except reflector, tin can, 102mm dia, 75mm depth.
    Was poorly 80dBm, now good as 65-67.
    Haha, at 10cm from it, at the path of the narrow beam shown -15dBm

      it would be 15 and I know this because I have a measuring device. 15mm is a little bit better than half an inch.
      50mm is two inches
      Now look at the video you can see NO way is it 2 inches or 50 mm so it would have to be 15mm.
      You also can tell another way. From the tip of your thumb to its first knuckle is approximately 1 inch. Look at the length of the antenna compare it to Andrew's first knuckle and the tip of his thumb you can see it's shorter.
      meaning it's 15mm.

      I just started w/ your videos and being a tinker all my life I like the way you take everyday items and use tools that even those aren't constantly tearing the thing apart to see how they work or I my case I think there's got to be a better way this can be done...I build and fly remote control airplanes, boats, cars, and as I think you just called it a quad think I like the building part the best. Sorry I get off sometimes.....Love UR stuff, can follow UR thought process but you are much smarter and have focused your craft in a direction I haven't gotten into yet, so you are much smarter and I have something I have been looking in for over a year now and would really appreciate your input. I have a hard time paying for cable, wifi, phone, tv. Not so much the money but I can't stop thinking that there has to be a better way, so to pick up an open source wifi pull it into my house, amplify it and push it out through the rest of the house or run 1 LAN....An antenna for 50 -100km direct L.O.S. Cad5/cad 6/ the connectors. Alfa to a router? modem? bottom line I would like to pick up open wifi and get online and buy what I can and make what I need, to get the best and the fastest for the leastest.....Didn't mean to put this in your reply, just popped into the head...Thank you for the time you spend on these vids,

    Love your Videos, I find the problem with a marking tool is that you mesure the length to your grips, As soon as you make your bend the length you have just messured has reduced.

    Dear Andrew, thanks for all the fantastic videos, I really enjoyed all of them. I have days watching them over and over again. Just love it! You make it look so easy and so much fun.
    Keep up the good work!
    I actually tried some of your builds, with varying succes, better succes when I started using the correct materials.
    Can you answer following questions?
    A-In this build, wire diameter =1.25mm ?
    B-Will all sorts of paint work? Any paint to specifically not use?stay clear of? I allways thought painting is bad for the signal.
    C-I noticed you never really sharpened the bends afterwards; make them more square, would that be worse?
    D-I allways wondered about the exact biquad shape related to wire size; inside v.s. center v.s. outside lenght of elements.
    I noticed the PCB version of the 2.4 biquad yagi has a driven elemnt of outside 31.25mm, inside 25mm outside.
    Any chance you can shed some light on this?

    You need to discuss what to do with antenna AFTER it's built. I need to boost my mobile reception in the house. I want to mount the antenna on a tall pole from the roof. What do I do with the signal in the coax cable? How do I bring it down and into my wifi network. What hardware do I need to make that happen? Does the antenna transmit the stronger signal back to the cell tower? I appreciate your clever handiwork, but what comes next?

    Hi, I'm from Indonesia. As most of WiFi extenders (access point radios) have 2 antennas, so we have to decide which one is the receiver antenna, or the transmitter antenna, then we can apply the quad antenna as shown in this video.
    I need your explanation, thanks in advance.

    I'm noticing the biquad antenna has a driven element and a reflector. I wonder if parasitic elements can be made to make it a biquad yagi hybrid. 🤔

    Hi Andrew. Very inventive reuse of a pie dish!
    I want to make a pair of biquads for 700 Mhz 4G and install them -45 / +135 degrees for a MIMO installation.
    I have some perforated aluminium sheet (as used in security doors) I'd like to use for the reflectors.
    My question is, can I use a single sheet as a reflector for both of the antennas? Mount one biquad element angled one way up one end of the sheet and the other biquad element at the other end of the sheet, angled the opposite way but on a single reflector? Or do I need to have completely separate antennas?

    Hi Andrew, Thanks for the vids, I subscribed some time ago.
    I’ve just watched this vid and the one about using a photographers umbrella, very interesting. But it’s this vid and the comments below that has really grabbed my attention.
    I know so little about WiFi etc that I struggle to spell it !!!
    But I’m a eager learner out of necessity ( but plowing through cr-p on Y/T about this subject and just about everything else is a skill in itself ).
    I have been paying through the nose (£££) for a long time for Mobile Data which most of the time is so slow I overtake it on the train ( would that be the Doppler Effect ? ).
    I regularly camp in a rural situation ( that has a poor Mobile Data signal and no power source other than solar panel and other equipment I’m amassing for the job.
    Around town is just the same ( for different reasons / building walls that are thick ).
    And public WiFi - ( as if ) who invented that joke, ok for teenagers furiously texting each other.
    I want Mega mbS out of the suppliers, I’m not going to spend the rest of my life, or even just 5 secs ( it all adds up ), waiting for sh-t to D/L
    I’ve improved this situation recently by using MiFi’s ( I can spell that, just !!! ).
    And I’m contemplating trying to use them at my camp set up in a directional bowl mounted on a pole, along with suitably placed battery powered WiFi Repeaters and or Wireless USB Drives to better grab a signal and throw it in my direction.
    I’m vaguely aware that Mobile Data is transmitted from providers towers at a slightly different wavelength to WiFi from a Router etc.
    I presume your method and equipment is for improving connection to Mobile Data providers towers - please comment.
    I’m also interested in your mention of the smaller version of this antenna that you made with a Sardine Can. I’m interested in this as a way of improving either Public WiFi or more importantly to improve Mobile Data around town. Either by the ideas above for my camp for my iPad, or connecting directly to my Android phones ( I’ve just watched a vid about removing the Test Port on a Mobile as a way of disabling the electronics to the factory supplied internal antenna so the phone will recognise a more [ usable ] external antenna ). Or to connect to Dongles for my Laptop.
    Please comment.
    My spelling over time is slowly improving, but I could do with a bit of advice so I can more quickly start uttering the type of words that usually grace the lips of Mary Poppins, know what I mean, - Supa Wa ??

    Hi Andrew great video, i tried your build and it didn't go so well, i used an N connector with coax to connect to my alfa card but the results was disappointing but that could be the fact i struggled with getting the measurements right, i have ordered a caliper to get my measurements, but where do you get the sma panel mount connectors from that you use in this video? i've looked on ebay and amazon but can't find the correct ones, if you could get me a link that would be great, thank you

    This biquad antenna does work very well. I built different versions of it.
    If you live in mainland western Europe and have an Action shop in the neighborhood, you can use their Disney canister for it (example: www.action.com/nl-nl/p/disney-opbergblik-/ ). It only costs 59 eurocents and you can make an antenna from the lid as well as the container.
    It's 12 cm in diameter, so close to a full wavelength of 2.4 GHz which is recommended.
    Make sure to use a very short coax cable, preferably of high quality and your soldering should be good (no cold joints). I just used the SMA-connectors of the standard-antenna's and made some extra shielding (Aluminium tape) where I joined the cables together. For the element itself I just used the core of the coax cable.

    i dont understand hooking the ground to the antenna aint it supposed to use the outer post of connector to outer post of the device its being hooked to i know in tv antennas this causes a huge loss in signal its the same as have the grounding shield touching the signal wire kills reception it looks like basicly you just hooked them togther using the anteenna itself as a jumper wire if im missing something please correct me

    Hi mate I know this is a very old video, I'm going to make one for my radio transmitter, can you use brass wire for the actual antenna? The copper wire I have is just a bit to flexible

      For long range a cantenna, for super long range a cantenna and satellite dish :-)

      The canantenna is too directional. I want to use them for my RC plane. I like the Biquad Yagi, but i don't know if these one in the video is better.

      The "gold" plating is a bit off, but it's completely the same otherwise.
      For high end antennas you may still want to look into quality connectors, since even the smallest losses are pretty important on long range communication, but for regular wifi within 3km it is perfectly fine.

      @@eesama9883 You need a RP-SMA male panel mount connector, which while rare is existing.
      My advice is that you don't use a panel mount and instead buy a regular connector, preferably one that is solder on unless you have crimpers.
      Then solder the coax to the connector and to the antenna, giving you a sort of a "pigtail" that's quite short but has several advantages, including better articulation of the wifi adapter and the cheaper price instead of the male RP-SMA connector.
      But feel free to try both, only the regular connectors are like 10 pieces for $5 and panel mount are like 1-2 for $5.

      Edit: I understand what you're saying now, but don't most of the TV coaxial cables will cause some loss? The recommended LMR-400 coax is so expensive.

      @@eesama9883 Err, go to the aliexpress, the 5m of the coax is under $10. Also, using the adapters is not the smartest thing, since god knows how they are engineered so there my be impedance mismatching or other things that could cause big losses.
      Remember a pretty important rule in RF, especially microwave:
      No adapters and sharp turns unless absolutely necessary.
      Every adapter will reduce your signal by about 1db, some will more and some less.
      So. Buy a panel mount RP-SMA and use a RP-SMA to RP-SMA cable.
      Or desolder your RP-SMA connector and solder a regular SMA connector, those are a bit more common.

    yeah, I know it's just a boring CD case,, but it's water resistant has a nifty adjustable stand, and works like hell mate ;)

    last pic, far right, it was a cheap chinese flat panel that was made entirely wrong, they had reflector, driven panel separated way too far apart, and then all of it connected with metal supports,nuts & bolts then connected to a usb wif donglei stuffed in there as well. I used nylon stand-offs instead, measured proper gap, eliminated the usb dongle, using a alpha instead...100% improvement

    Yes, I'd be surprised if they were fit for human consumption, they smell like cat food to me.
