      The Fabrication Series I was recently hired as a welder. Uncertified. However. I took a 3g horizontal and vertical hard wire test I still need to take the Tig test. It’s AWS. I was using 98/2 gas. Now how can I get the cert to follow me? Meaning if I leave this place? The test took me awhile. I had to weld both sides then cut out 1.5 inch coupons. After the visual part passed. Grind my welds flush. Then they went thru a bend test and passed.

      @@stcfabworx1687 Just get the WPQR and take it with you. As long as you show you used the process at lease every 6 months then you keep it for life. Then next shop you go to can simply file the WPQR and they will save themselves some money. I print a WPQR for every welder I qualify and keep a copy in the office.
      Even if your next shop works to a different code they will usually accept the AWS qualification. All the code books have a secton allowing qualification acceptance of another code

    Im a retired welder of thirty five years I built ski lifts for 22 years and bank vaults and red iron for the remaining years There's a lot of welding opportunities out there now and a big shortage of Certified welders Now is the time to get out there learn the trade get Certified, You can definitely make a good living lots of overtime you just have to get out there and get some helmet time in and the rest will fall in place

      There are thousands of certifications. I love the fabrication series. This is a kick ass channel and for those folks who get these certifications, I pray to God that it helps them get their foot in the door with these certifications matter. Also, it does matter to get the certifications, even if they're not flying out to Las Vegas meeting with those guys will say a lot to a potential employer that you are willing to go do what it takes It means you are a person of action.

    You're 100% correct. I didn't finish welding school. Even though I have basic welding experience it doesn't matter. My area has more welders than welding jobs. It is what it is.

    I had my AWS D1.1 4g certification, and yet I didn't even get a single call back because I didn't already have years of experience. Eventually gave up on welding as a career and now it's just a hobby.

    Why do people think this is a scam?
    I live in aussie land, i went to a place and got certified for aluminium tig and mig. I had to weld a 3f fillet that was later tested at and independent place and i passed.
    Easy done.

    I've been watching TFS for a while now, I like your teaching style. I've been hobby mig welding for years and just got into basic tig with a MP machine, stepped up my game a bit. I'm a tree climbing arborist by day but my passion is fab. I'd like to build specialized equipment for my industry BUT, I'm not a "welder" or "certified" so I'm limited to building/prototyping for myself. This video may have been the nudge that pushes me to get certified for backyardigan engineering. Kick ass man👍👍

  • @Huskyresqr

    I think what the nay-sayers are missing is that the welds, two of them, have to pass destructive testing! THE BEND TEST. Yes, the test is easy - meaning it is not difficult to take, assuming you've ever done overhead. Passing, on the other hand may not be so easy. So if you take the test and the coupons bend before the weld fails, that says something about your weld. So you achieved acceptable penetration. THAT takes some practice. Also note, this test doesn't qualify you to do nuclear or construction or oil pipe in the Yukon (or downtown East Jock-strap Missouri, for that matter) on anything equal to or larger than 1/4". The test is roughly somewhat less than 16 guage to slightly less than 1/4". So you won't be mig welding any I beams on the latest 100 story building....I agree, some certifications are useless - even if there is a certifying body....I know this because I've interviewed "certified" individuals who didn't know "s--t." But that certification did get them the interview didn't it?......just sayin'....

    Another reason companies like "certification" it covers their asses.
    Back in the day there was an expression "No-one ever got fired for buying IBM", now companies like Micro$oft, CISCO, etc, certification and the same principle applies in the welding field.

  • @FLQ309L
    @FLQ309L 5 лет назад +1

    You should ask some companies for their wps so you can test to that, because once they get hired (if it's a high paying job) they will have to retest again.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 5 лет назад +1

      Not really. A welder only qualifies on joint type, position and process. Find out what they do and you can get certification to suit. The procedures the shop has will cover specific joints, materials and process used. If you got all position FCAW on groove welds for example you would cover a ton of shops.

    The problem with welding certifications is that there's a different one for every different weld with every different process on every different kind of metal in every different thickness, they expire constantly, there's no such thing as an official certifying body, and unless you're a pipeliner no employer even cares if you are certified or what in. I can write you a certification that'll do you as much good as anyone else's.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  5 лет назад +1

      Did you not read the range on this one? It covers a lot.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 5 лет назад +3

      That's simply not true. You can qualify on a 1" steel horizontal groove and you have unlimited thickness qualification fror 1G, 2G,1F, 2F on any steel in that process. You could have a test like that done in a couple hours.

  • @mkalb4g63
    @mkalb4g63 5 лет назад

    I get the “I’m a certified welder” from lots of people. My first question for them is certified in what? Second when was the last time you were tested? You’d be surprised by the amount of people that believe that they are somehow qualified for life after passing a plate or pipe test whether it was last week or years ago. Most companies in my industry test welders on their first day and every six months thereafter. And almost every company has their own wps.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  5 лет назад

      It's still up to the person to keep up with their skills at the end of the day, but it's also good to have as many as you can get. If the company is willing to give out another that you dont have - take it and add it to your list of quals. It's a win/win.
