Kitsune Maison is about the lengths we go to chase an image or status to feel good about ourselves. Whether that’s expensive clothes, cars or a haircut. And then the empty feeling you feel when you realize those material things don’t actually fix what is wrong inside of you. It’s also about the regret we sometimes feel getting lost in this pursuit. That is why the verse is tongue in cheek “imma get my money” “my bag doesn’t look good on your girl.” Yeah it’s intentionally cheesy because it’s about vapid consumerism and ego. The chorus then changes it up saying “didn’t you see this coming? Everything you thought you wanted is made out of nothing.” It’s also why the song closes out with that passage from Porter where he confesses he got his teeth fixed to be a more “presentable” version of himself. Only for him to then deeply regret it because he misses the smile he was born with and can now never get it back.
I had a similar first reaction as yours haha Thought some of the newer songs were suuuuper slow until I listened again and this time really paying attention to how the “story” presents itself. I think most of the “love songs” aren’t as straightforward as they appear. There’s usually a twist in them that either makes the song incredibly sad or slightly concerning haha Id still say Nurture as a project feels more special to me but this is still going to grow on you I think! :D
I think you're right! Year of the Cup was a slow one but I still found it to be a great song, better than the other slow ones. But I'm warming up to those the more I listen.
Its been a couple weeks and while at first i definitely preferred Nuture over Smile im feeling very different about it now. At worst its even and depending on the day i now actually say smile is my new album favorite At first i was immediately attracted to the obvious bangers and almost felt let down by how many slow songs there was but still enjoyed them. However whats changed after many album playthroughs is just the overall story and lyrics of the album. Listing to Porter Robinson explain the behind the scenes of them has been super helpful and now that i understand what they all mean their sentiments just vibe so hard with each of their productions. Smile has made me cry more than any album of recent memory and maybe its just my personal relevance to the topics but they continue to just hit me so deep and some tracks ill be good with and then a new one starts hitting me in a new way. Year of cup used to be my least favorite but its the latest of many that has me teared up because of the emotionals are just so perfectly connected to each song that i feel like its reaching certain emotional parts of me i wasn't fully aware of. Overall i think its just such a solid album and of the bat I thought Nurture was just superior because of its more consistent vibe/concept but after releasing my first expectations on Smile i find that the project has more meaning, less fluff, and is just so personal and for all of those reasons its really depending on the day which Porter album is my favorite.
Ok this is gonna sound completely harsh and it’s fine since it is your opinion. However, this is 💯 the most negative smile review out there. And yes you’ve only really singled out 3 to maybe 4 tracks… but that’s still only a 60% lmao And my only take away from your dislikes is that you just genuinely cannot stand music that has “low energy”. It’s fine to criticize an artist but to say the lack of energy is a flaw (which you kept repeating and even going as far to say that it might put you to sleep) ISNT on the artist but on you. Slow and melancholic music has existed for all of time essentially and you’re basically implying slow music is bad. Again it may not be what you intended BUT you kept saying it Also an album and its themes can evolve overtime within the runtime of the album as the artist. Going from fast to slow within the album and cheerful to moody isn’t a flaw You know what’s a flaw? Kitsune maisons odd lyrics that don’t flow well at all at certain times in the track or year of the cups odd song flow with the lil Wayne sample. You’ve already complimented the mix being spotless so that’s out the window as a criticism
Year of the Cup is probably the low point of the album for me, specifically from the Lil Wayne interview sections, there's just a few too many of them and personally they kind of just take me out of the song. There's the spoken section in Kitsune Maison as well, but I think that one fits better since it's actually Porter talking, so it doesn't feel as jarring of a switch from him singing like Year of the Cup does to me. If there was a re-cut of Year of the Cup without the interview sections (just instrumental interludes), or with Porter rerecording them rather than sampling Lil Wayne, then it'd probably be a lot higher on my list - I like the *song* just not the interview sections in it. If Year of the Cup had the interview sections changed, then Everything To Me would probably be the only one I leave off my playlist, just because it's so much slower than all the rest of them. Easier To Love You is also slow, but it's grown on me, especially with the ending of it being so good. Definitely going to be interesting to see how this album plays out live with so many slower songs on it. Luckily the venue near me offers balcony seats not just GA standing floor, so I'm taking advantage of that for the tour, and will almost definitely be sitting for all the slower ones.
The guitar part in "Everything To Me" is the "Get Your Wish" chorus melody.

thank you for pointing this out. I just realized it when I read your comment lol

in-fact porter has gone as far as to say that none of the songs are love songs

17:56 he has said that he was sick while recording this song which is why his voice is like that, but he likes the vibe it brings.

I don't understand how they're jarring, sampling interviews is pretty common.
