The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Viscount and Viscountess Hinchingbrooke 👑👑
Love Luke, he's so funny. More recipes with Luke as the sous chef. LOL
I love your inlaws, Julie. They are such sweet, intelligent people
The Earl and the Countess are adorable treasures!
I think their lovely in-laws as well. So fascinating they all are. I have to say when I came upon this family their videos released me from sort of a dark place w the world's situation. I loved her enthusiasm & being just so Julie & Luke such a nice couple. They've been my main entertainment now when I watch TV. I cut off our cable... couldn't stand it. We love syfy & old films so history has trumped us and restoration & preservation got me. Thank you for all of your journeies
Omg I forgot my suggestion. Lay some sheets on the ground to catch the things lol
Dust buster🎉your welcome 😁
Luke trying to rationally explain things while Julie is a swirling dervish (how American!) is a tonic! Please more! You two are just so lovely!🥰
The Earl of Sandwich is absolutely charming! I love Luke’s hair combed back that way, so becoming! Julie, this outfit you have on is absolutely marvelous!
Oh thank you!
How I love the Earls recounting and expressions. What a lovely man.
Luke's looks and mannerisms are so like his father's. What a lovely family you married into. I am sure they love you as dearly as you obviously do them.
You two in the kitchen together are so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your recipes!
Luke isn't negative,he's practical.
He like to tease her a lot 😊
Said every English man to his American wife.
I'm an American wife 😂
I have to add - I think there was a step that was missed with the chocolate ice cream. The salt and the snow was used outside the container, to help it freeze. The delicious chocolate filling that you drank would have taken about 15 - 20 minutes to make in an old wooden barrel ice cream maker. Just google old wooden barrel ice cream maker, my dad had one, and snow and ice was used to surround the container containing the delicious stuff to make it freeze. We would manually turn the handle on the icecream maker containing the spear, surrounded with snow and salt, with the delicious chocolate filling inside the sphere. And the snow and ice created some type of super freezing mechanism. We would always say, not enough salt in the snow or too much salt … 😂😂😂 hope I explained it clear enough … 😅😅😅
I agree, I don't think the chocolate was supposed to go directly into the ice and salt, the recipe even says to place the vessel with the chocolate into the ice. Reminds me of being a kid when we would use a small sealed container with the ingredients and place it into a larger container with ice and salt, then we would roll them for a while.
Yeah- I’m pretty sure they did it wrong too since there were issues with translation.
The “hot chocolate” milk and spices mixture absolutely should have been in a shaker surrounded by the salt and ice.
You two are great! I love when you cook up these recipes. More please!❤
I actually love love love the banter between you two whenever you get into discussions it's just so cute 😊
Julie and Luke remind me of watching Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
My mom had a warming drawer in her wall oven. She would warm our plates in there and it would also keep leftovers warm.
Yess!!
OMG! You are so 🎯
She reminds me of a friend I often call Lucy!!!
So funny and cute!
Lucy and Desi only funny.
@@kq20117We have a warming drawer and use it at weekend brunches and big family gatherings so the food will remain warm when there are so many people to serve.😊
Luke whacking the damsons… the damsons were in distress. 🤣🤣 you two make me laugh so much.
Right!
Loved the banter between you both ,, never seen one of you doing old resipes loved it seeing you get ingredients fresh from the garden . A light hearted fun episode thank you 😊
It's lovely to see how your confidence & comfort levels have grown as you've taken us along on your adventures.
The wonderful relationship you have with the in-laws is lovely to see. Especially your father in law, you two are sweet.
...the Earl's reaction to the recipes made me smile. Thank you for sharing Mapperton...
This a wonderful post … I love the chemistry between you and Luke!!❤
Wow - Julie you are so blessed with Luke's family History!
How precious, that Manucript!!🤗
You two are so cute in the kitchen together. My family is from Europe and my grandma used to always make mulled wine in the winter, boy does that bring back memories.
Another episode of' "High Jinx with Luke and Julie" Love It!!!!
You two are infinitely entertaining, such a joy to watch, I am laughing out loud watching you make the gin😂😂😂
If you want to re-create the chocolate ice cream recipe at the beginning of the video, a stone slab (metate) and metal or stone roller will process the raw cacao better; in the original illustration that was shown in the antique book with the original recipe, that is what the man who was rolling the chocolate would have been using, rather than a wooden board and rolling pin. The stone metate (with legs that hold the surface up at a slanted angle) would have had a container of coals set underneath it to heat the stone up; that, plus the texture of the stone itself would both grind and melt the cacao, bringing out the cocoa butter and turning the cacao into a thick liquid that could be scraped/poured into the container with the snow. That, when shaken and combined with the snow, would have frozen into "curls" like the recipe said, and might have turned out with a better texture, although the flavor would still have been bitter.
The hot chocolate recipe contains Jamaica pepper, which I have heard is another word for allspice, and the "amber" is ambergris, which was an exotic flavoring in those days, but is now illegal to buy except under certain conditions, because it comes from whales, which have to be dead in order to harvest it.
I’ve watched a gentleman in Australia pick up ambergris on the coastlines of all the surrounding islands of Australia.. His dog has been trained to find it.. I’ve always wondered why it was illegal to sell.. He gives his away just like the nautilus shells he finds..
Whales cough it up and go on their way. Its spermaceti that is extracted from hunted whales.
I was going to say she needs a metate but most didnt carry those in England even during those time periods or even now, that is a special order thing.
@@michelleg7 Yes, however in those days both the metate and the chocolate itself were luxury goods, so the coffee shops that sold chocolate, and anybody who was buying chocolate, very likely would have had one. The Chocolate Room (reproduction) at Hampton Court Palace has one, for example. It might even be easier to find one in England these days, what with the diversity of the population especially in London, but chocolate is now so much cheaper, and in a "just-add-water" form, that having a metate is no longer necessary. But if they intend to reproduce the original recipe in their cafe, I think they should invest in a metate!
Would a molcajete do the same thing?
Julie and Luke!
You guys have me laughing to the point of hysterics. I'm watching the scene about the "Snow Chocolate Ice Cream". Your father-in-law was sooo funny- can I have more hot Chocolate, quickly.....you two in the kitchen were priceless. Now your trying to pick psychedelic mushrooms - get John right away to retrain you.
Thank you so much for making my day. I enjoy all your shows.
Kim from Cloudy FL
Loved this one. One suggestion when you shake the tree put down a few sheets to catch them dropping. The ice cream was a roar lol. The hot chocolate cool! Imagine the cookbook you could create from all the recipes from the past. Yikes! Very cool!
So the earls of sandwhich love carbs and sugars yum my kind of man lol what fun What a wonderful thing to find My goodness how did the earl even come upon this wonderful recipe Imagine all the wonderful information in those journals what fun !!! It would be such fun to just sit and read those for days at a time With many cups of tea and hot chocolate yum Julie your streams and buds are always so very much fun
no the ice didn't have sugar
This was your best episode yet! The both of you are adorable!l I look forward to every post from you, and learn something every time!
Old videos are great! Kitchen compilation.
Luke and Julie you two are absolutely adorable. Please do more videos together I love them!
I am an American🇺🇸 and when I was a teenager, we lived in a culdesac where all the families celebrated 4th of July🇺🇸
together. We all shared our 🎆fireworks🎇 to make quite a show and my mother would make mulled wine for the adults and mulled applecider for the young people. It was always a really great night.
Oh! my stomach is hurting from laughing so much!!! You two are quite hilarious together.😆🤣
Hilariously fun Cookery Classes & other stuff...Brilliant! 😅
Oh such a cute and wonderfully unique episode !! . Old recipes with a wonderful history lesson is such a treat. Please keep doing more . I love when you include your adorable in-laws 💕🇺🇸
Oh my goodness now you have icecream as well as "the sandwich" your family is incredible! Julie if you could one day write a family cookbook. Luke Jamaica pepper is allspice and the amber sounds like saffron or possibly tumeric. During this time Spain had a heavy middle eastern population(that became Spanairds) and a spice trade with middle eastern countries as far as India. I believe Luke to very practical and the type of man not to "count his chicks before his eggs hatch" per sae? You 2 are completely wonderful together in the kitchen. ❤ Julie i love your enthusiasm its so exciting!
I have caught up with Mapperton live posts and I have so enjoyed watching them. I can’t wait for the next one.
My Hubby of 40 years and I LOVE watching the two of you together! We definitely see kindred spirits as we actually really and truly laugh out loud with you! ♥️🤣 The secret to our long and blissfully happy marriage is our Faith and always to remember no matter what life brings focus on the ones you love and never forget to include lots of time for playing and laughter!! You see, when you always leave room for love and laughter we promise there is just such an incredible joy to the life you all will share that facing the many ups and downs that everyone must endure somehow becomes possible when those difficult times are wrapped in all of those beautiful memories that you have made shared and weathered together seem to fade into the background!!! Watching the two of you have so much fun making sandwiches is a great sign of the many decades of joy to come!! God bless you both, your children and entire families!!! After the sorrow of the many lives lost to ravages of two hurricanes it’s been nice to have a reason to laugh!!
♥️♥️🤣 Lots and lots of love from the Southern US 🇺🇸

Absolutely Fabulous you two, we have discovered another part of the your talents, you both get on so well with each other and it was so lovely to watch the methods used to make some century old ice cream. We take it for granted how we make ice cream these days, great to see the Earl of Sandwich really enjoyed the ice cream 😊 thank you so much, glad that you showed us all how it was done. Be safe, take care and God Bless 😇🙏🏰

I love watching you and Luke. You compliment each perfectly. It's nice to see a match made in heaven. Wishing you great success at Mapperton. Peace & Love!
