Historic Mangsir Bagwal festival kicks off in Uttarkashi
The historic Mangsir Bagwal festival kicked off on Monday at Ramleela Ground of Uttarkashi district, as Congress leader and former chief minister inaugurated the festivities. The two-day event, organized by Angha Mountain Association, included traditional dance and music performances and even sports activities. In an effort to promote traditional cuisine and artifacts of Garhwal region, which are on the verge of extinction, the organizers also had made Gad Bhoj (Garhwali cuisine) and Gad Sangrahalay (Garhwali museum) a part of the event.
वर्ष 1632 में गढ़वाल नरेश राजा महिपत शाह के शासनकाल में तिब्बत के दावा घाट में गढ़वाल और तिब्बत की सेना के बीच युद्ध हुआ था। गढ़वाल की ओर से सेनापति लोदी रिखोला और माधो सिंह भंडारी के नेतृत्व में गढ़वाल की सेना युद्ध लड़ने गई थी। युद्ध लंबा चलने पर सेना दीपावली तक घर नहीं लौट पाई थी। तब सेनापति माधो सिंह भंडारी ने संदेश भिजवाया था कि तिब्बत पर विजय हासिल कर लौटने के बाद ही बग्वाल मनाई जाएगी। गढ़वाल की सेना दीपावली के ठीक एक माह बाद तिब्बत पर विजय हासिल कर लौटी थी। तभी से मंगसीर की बग्वाल मनाने की परंपरा चली आ रही है।
