Fun Fact: The chanting in Baiken’s theme is the Mantra Of Light from Buddhism Translation: om abogya beiroshanō makabodara mani handoma “Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra” jinbara harabari tayaun narakuni utauwa rokkonshoujo “Turn over to me the jewel, lotus, and radiant light. Chant from the naraka, rokkonshoujo” (Rokkonshoujo is a common Buddhist phrase which roughly means to become closer to nirvana by losing the six parts of being I.e body, mind, spirit, etc)
The Japanese in Baiken's theme is the Mantra of Light. It's used a lot by Buddhist monks. The translation of the lyrics of the song aren't super important to understanding the song, it's more about the fact that she is singing a Buddhist mantra, which connects back to her younger life since she is Japanese, which is a country that was turned into a crater in Guilty Gear lore. Her singing this also shows the more stoic side of her personality with her trying not to be as angry and full of vengeance as she once was.
She's also hundreds of years old, which relates to the other lines of her song. Time has "moved on" and she's something of a remnant of a bygone era, but she keeps on keeping on.
@@beo3828 She grew up in a Colony after the destruction of Japan. Common misunderstanding. She was a child "near the end" of the crusades, Japan's destruction was the start of the war.
Another great batch of characters 👀 Baiken is a character that's been around since the very first GG game, so her theme is one of those that's technically going through the entirety of her character development in the series. She's one of the few remaining Japanese people in the world of Guilty Gear, and thus grew up in one of the Colonies built to protect them- however, her village was destroyed in a targeted Gear attack one day, leaving her as one of the only survivors (it's implied Anji, whose theme you already heard, lived in the same village as her, also), costing her her family and her arm and eye. Ever since then she has been out for revenge upon "That Man", a historical and mythological figure in the world of GG who created the Gears, and whom Baiken believes she saw during her home's destruction. So throughout the series, Baiken struggles with her desire for vengeance eating up her entire life, basically not allowing herself to live and exist beyond that purpose- The chanting in her theme is a Buddhist mantra which is supposed to be used for the funeral of someone believed to be destined to go to hell to free them of their bad karma, which relates to the way Baiken believes herself to be damned and her life already forfeit. The current conclusion of her character arc is spoilers for the latest game, so I might hold off on it at this point :^Ic Testament is another classic character from the very first game- as you guessed, they are officially referred to as they/them in English (tho earlier translations used he/him until series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari clarified it) and they are non-binary (leaning towards agender) Their history is a pretty tragic one, hailing from Switzerland, like many others of the cast, they became an orphan during the Crusades. They were adopted by Kliff Undersn, who was a very high-ranking member of the Holy Order, who was a loving father to them, but they always felt a bit insecure, and desperate to make him proud somehow. So, against their father's wishes, they enlisted in the Order as well to try and become a distinguished knight, but they were killed by Gears within their first year of service. After that, their remains were stolen by a certain organization who transformed them into Gear, bringing them back to life, but also making them fall under the control of Justice (the Gear that can control all the other Gears :^Ic), so under her control, they were made to fight humanity. For a long time, even after regaining their free will, Testament's character was defined by their melancholy, feeling both a hatred for humanity, but also guilt for the things they themselves had done. Still there were those whom Testament considered friends who would encourage them to keep going, and so when they reappeared again as a character in Strive, we see that over the years that have passed since we last saw them (6 years in-universe) they have grown to be a lot happier now, enjoying life in ways we'd never seen before from them, and overall living a completely normal life among humans again, despite being a Gear. Bridget didn't appear until GGXX (which is like, the 3rd to 4th game(s), but is actually one of the most popular Guilty Gear characters in general! As you might have heard, as of Strive, she's officially come out as a trans girl, which means a lot to many fans, as you can imagine. Series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari has gone on record to say that this was always the intent of her character, but since it wasn't as feasible to have a character like that in the 00s, her backstory can seem a bit perplexing to some. She was born as a younger identical twin, to a wealthy British family. But, in their hometown, there existed a superstition that male identical twins are bad luck. As such, Bridget was raised to present as a girl to the outside world. Though, Bridget actually felt perfectly comfortable in that role, and often tried to assure their parents that she was fine like this. Her parents however believed she was only putting on a brave face, and felt incredibly guilty and upset over what Bridget had to "endure". So, Bridget eventually decided that to make her parents happy, she would prove the supersition wrong by bringing good fortune to the town, which would allowe her to openly present as male, like her parents wished she could. To do this, she became a bounty hunter, and yes, she did manage to make so much money with her work, the townsfolk stopped believing she was a jinx. But, now that she was free to live as a man in her town (and would be expected to at this point), Bridget found that she did not feel happy with this. Her theme in turn is about her mulling over these feelings, deep down she knows she's happy as a girl, but she's afraid of admitting this to herself and others at this point- she loves her family and her home, but worries they will reject her if she came out as a trans girl to them, especially after everything she'd achieved so far 😮💨
One of the strengths of Strive is the growth all the character experience. The creator of the game is no longer the 20s something that wrote a plot made up entirely of heavy metal references and cool stuff he liked. The plot is still bonkers in the best of ways ofcourse, but his character writing has become incredibly strong. Almost all the cast of Strive has very compelling interactions and all experience change that is true to them. Baiken, Testiment and Bridgett all get incredible songs that showcase who they have become. The vengeance filled samurai who rejected the world to steep in her spite and hatred, cast those emotions away, sacrifices her vengeance and goes into the world ready to start anew. The living weapon, created to exist in-between find piece in the ambiguity of their existence. Neither human, not fully Gear. Not male or female. Not good or evil. And Bridgett finally figuring out who she is and taking a first steps into her new life and self. Unburdened by the weight other have put on her with their expectations and labels. It's maybe the best song out of all of them and thats some pretty strong competition. All in all great video.
all characters are having great characters arc...and there is Doct faust, lets check is history: first he became crazy cause he thinked he killed a patient, then he became a murderer, then he became a crazy doctor but now he helped helaing people instead of murdering them , then he discover the conspiration that made him crazy in the first place and clear is name, then he healed many improtant characters like may and Zappa, in the last game he helped save the entire world finding a cure that saved ALL the japanese people of explding(?) and now he ...he became a zombie? i guess. not even the people of the country he saved last game seem to remember him.... is so weird
@@gexianhen But thematically his arc is still compelling. Being unable to save that girl broke him in a way he never recovered. And no matter how much good he did her death weighted him down like an anchor. Yes he was left as basically a zombie, but what he did he did to save a young girl and no price was too much for him. In a way he back to basic, but also maybe for the first time in ages he is also free. In a state of grace. His song confirm that much at least. The mad rambling of his unquiet mind finally coalescing into achingly beautiful melody, still insane, but full of grace, regret and peace. I for one don't think that he regrets his choice and maybe this is as good as it gets for somebody this broken by the world.
Quick lore for each character When baiken was young her village was destroyed by the villain known as… THAT MAN! (Yes seriously, that’s his name) in the process her friends and family were killed, she lost her arm, and she lost her eye. So she set out on a quest for revenge, the time exile line is representative of her viewing herself as this relic wandering the world solely for revenge. Though the Buddhist mantra throughout the song shows she’s leaning away from pure vengeance and the end of her story in GG strive shows her giving up on it for something more important. Testament is a humanoid gear (monster/creature/cryptid of sorts) being mind control by the ruler of gears, a being known as Justice. Eventually Testament is freed from the mind control and winds up in a forest protecting a girl named Dizzy, who is Justice’s daughter. Dizzy is a kind person who doesn’t like to fight so Testament fights for her, Dizzy later married Ky so Testament is now a neutral party in the world that kind just does their own thing. Bridgette was born into a village on the same day as HIS twin brother. Thing is the village has this very strange superstition about twins who are the same gender being a terrible omen so Bridgette’s parents raised her as a girl. She picked up bounty hunting to earn money and having as much time away from the village let her evaluate something’s, chiefly among them being she may have been born a boy but every time she’s tried to come to terms with any of that she’s distracted herself, ‘I hate the alarm clock I chose.’ ‘This tastes like vegetables I don’t like.’ She does eventually come to terms with it as at this point she’s more comfortable as a girl than a boy.
The chant in Baiken's song is the mantra of light. So it means "Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra. Turn over to me the jewel, lotus and radiant light."
Baiken: Local woman too angry to die (she chilled out now looking after a child who could nuke a city) Bridget: One of twin boys who was raised as a girl due to her town's superstition. Goes on a journey to prove it wrong, but she now accepted herself for who she is. Testament:
Happy you guys are still doing the guilty gear songs reaction. This batch has some great catchy songs. My favorite one may be appearing in the next video, it’s called “Drift” and i think you guys are going to enjoy that one!
Hey guys love the Guilty Gears OST reactions. If it doesn't bother you guys, I would like to suggest Gekko Squirrel theme video, he explain each character's theme in a summary. It really is enjoyable and has 2 parts to it. If you guys done with all of the OSTs, and want to learn a bit of the lore behind it, please react to it.
My favourite part of both 'Mirror of the World' and 'The Town Inside Me' is how the lyrics change throughout the chorus In Baiken's theme, there's a lot of self-punishment and regret as she repeats the words 'I'm the time exile', until near the end where the song interrupts itself and says immediately after 'no, don't stand still'. Then, the final lines of the song becomes 'I am not the exile' and 'YOU are not the exile' -- indicating she is giving this speech to someone else, the 'mirror' who had experienced the same pain she had. By freeing herself of that pain, she is able to save someone who suffered the same fate. In Bridget's theme, it's the phrase 'Me without me, I'm the one to blame' that gets repeated throughout. However, it gets weaker and weaker until it eventually becomes the background accompaniment instead -- it doesn't disappear from Bridget's consciousness, but it takes over her less and less. Until eventually it's replaced in the last line of the chorus (and of the whole song) as 'I can feel the light, even after the sun goes down'.
A fun fact about Testament: Guilty Gear Strive is the first English game to use they/them pronouns and say they are non-binary, but in Japanese, Testament has been referred to as x-gender, the Japanese term for non-binary people, since the first Guilty Gear game in 1998.
The buddhist chant contained within Baiken's lyrics, known as the "Mantra of Light", is supposedly recited as part of a ritual to cleanse the soul from the burden of sin. In that context, it fits Baiken quite well, indicating that she harbors a wish to not be guided by rage and vengeance anymore, but cannot think of any other purpose for her life, one that has been formed by fighting, bloodshed, and loneliness. She doesn't regret her past decisions, but wonders if it's too late to change her path, having realized that there's nothing left to live for once she finally kills the man embodying all of her loss and suffering.
Once all of the themes have been reacted to, I really hope you give Woolieversus’ Heaven or Hell Guilty Gear Lore series a watch. There are other videos that attempt explain the lore in a shorter amount of time and I think that they’re good videos themselves, but Heaven or Hell is definitely the most in depth and gives you a real understanding of the amazing world that Daisuke has created while also having the best story telling out of all of them (and it was even officially recognized by Arcsystem Works due to how thorough the research was).
I think it was actually sponsored by them to be done. Which is crazy that Woolie got asked and paid to go lore diving and explaining something he loves so much.
Bridget's theme is not my cup of tea in terms of genre (huge metalhead) but it's quite frankly the best song ever written about the transgender experience. It connects so strongly with me emotionally because the lyrics don't "make sense" but they hit my soul. I felt the same way in a lot of aspects. And it's written in a way that someone who isn't transgender can also emphasize with it. It's quite frankly a masterpiece of music. Testament's is also just wonderful, a song about just wanting to be accepted and live a botherfree life on your own terms. And yes, Testament is agender so good catch on that. Baiken searches for purpose after spending her entire life on revenge against the person that destroyed Japan and her home, only to fail and never being able to get it. She'll be a mirror of the world in the sense that she will exist as the world is now, not as it was when her family was killed or when she wandered alone for vengeance. It's a song about letting go of past grudges and that letting them consume you will make you lose focus of the things that are precious to you today.
@@mydrillasanjay5397 Yeah, I've come around to enjoying the songs even though it's a bit out of my comfort zone. I still think May's theme and Jack-O's theme are vapid and kinda dumb though, but I can see their appeal. I think Bridget's stands a bit on its own as a bit more emotionally powerful and the lyrics are more thought provoking.
I, as a cisgender straight male, always manage to well up whenever I hear Bridget's theme. The lyrics really manage to capture this feeling of embracing your true self after being stuck in a "gray haze for a long time." It feels so triumphant and poignant. I can't help but feel vicarious catharsis for people who might hear this song and feel seen and validated
nice, finally some more guilty gear OSTs reactions! absolutely love them. also, the Japanese lyrics in Baiken's song is text of Mantra of Light, popular Buddism suntra in Japan.
Next times reaction has a few of my fav songs in the game Asuka, Bedman and Happy Chaos have some of the most interesting songs. I adore Baikens theme so much it’s got such a good rhythm to. Also Japanese people are just built different and basically have superpowers after it was turned into a crater which is why Mei can wield her anchor and Baiken is such a beast of a swordswoman
Baiken is a fun character. People seeing her for the first time are usually "Haha big booba," but she's almost the polar opposite of a typical fanservice character. She yells herself hoarse during battle, and not in a ladylike way. She's got a fighting style that is this weird fusion of rabid offense and precise, timed defense. Her thing is, she's from Japan, which seems obvious, right? But Japan was obliterated in Guilty Gear lore. She lost her parents, one eye, and one arm. Prior to this game, she was absolutely consumed with the goal of perishing the person who orchestrated those events. She had this demeanor where she'd kinda just assumed she'd perish in her mission anyway, so she was simultaneously laser-focused, and would also happily drink and smoke and laugh, or be vicious and uncaring, all depending on the situation. In Strive, this song - Mirror of the World - is about her finally recognizing that the world has already moved on and rebuilt, and there are people who legitimately care about her. Also fun fact, her and Anji Mito form sort of a pair, with Anji being a man and yet taking on some of the stereotypically feminine roles (battle-dancer with fans, trying to be be the emotional center/love interest rescuing a character who is going down a dark path) while Baiken takes on some of the stereotypically masculine roles (being essentially a Ronin, driven by vengeance, emotionally closed off.)
2 lyrics that kind of change the meaning of Baiken's song, 4:02 that yelling, they are saying "No forgiveness" and it's not "this is her way", it's "necessary". So in all, "No forgiveness necessary." Plus, at the end 6:28 "Then kill the pain!" is "Pain to kill the pain!" Also, yeah others have said it but the chanting is the Buddhist Mantra of Light. Baiken is a legacy character kind of like Scorpion in a way if you compare motivations and overall character development to MK characters but by Strive she's finding purpose beyond revenge. Really, despite her boobs growing each game and her refusing to get a new gi to match, she's a very angry and tragic character that found a measure of peace in the recent game. To be honest if you know the characters backstory and personality, most of these songs only have really 1 interpretation. Like Bridget, just her song is just not accepting what society forces on you. Although I kind of feel that's what she inadvertently did but that's a whole can of worms.
I really love these reactions, but I need to ask, did they skip over drift? They seem to be going in order but seem to have gone passed it. Loved the reactions to these though, especially Town inside Me
Do you plan on doing more Guilty Gear videos beyond the themes? Just asking because several more DLC characters and their trailers have been released since your initial draft video. The most recent trailer came out just 2 days ago
Yeah, he's right, I mentioned before that Capn Booker has the Correct Lyrics Video for Jack-O and Baiken, also fun fact Mirror of The World reminds me of MUST Die from Blazblue Central Fiction and Blazblue Cross Tag Battle as Mirror of The World is my favorite Guilty Gear Song and MUST Die is my favorite Blazblue Song.
The only problem is most fights are over before the intro even finishes lol. Daisuke truly is a mad man writing all these epic tracks that tell the entire back stories of the characters and their motivations, and you're lucky if you get to the first verse with some of them.
Chant is the Mantra of Light. Basically it's used to forgive a soul after death, a prayer for the deceased to find peace. Baiken at this point in the story is attempting to bury her past, "kill" her previous life and find forgiveness and new purpose moving forward. The song is about her hopes that her actions can be forgiven, that she can find peace, and that she can find a new better future for herself. The Mantra is being used for her past self, to wash away her sins and cleanse her for the future, not unlike a christian baptism. The song has dueling concepts in the first stanzas, with her wishing to remove her pain with the Mantra and the troubles with "cutting away vexations" while also being told "the day which will never begin" and how she is a "time exile" unable to relate with the current world and find her place and peace. It culminates with her stating she doesn't need sympathy and why won't she be left alone before coming to the realization that she needs a comrade, other people, to find the peace and life she really wants. She then resolves to forgo her vengeance, to make it a "sacrifice" to kill her pain. That she will be "a mirror of the world", reflecting it but also by being that reflection a part of it, the "time exile" no more. It ends with a final prayer for her former self in the hopes that peace and forgiveness can be found.
This is more so a question than an explanation but... I believe you two have skipped Happy Chaos' theme, right? I cannot find a reaction to it in the channel, and if you have been following the same playlist you seem to be, this video or the last should've included it, but didn't. Is this just a minor oopsie or is it due to recommendations?
Also I got the official lyrics for Baiken's song. I'll post the English segments. If that's what you call karma, I must be a demon. God knows. God knows that no voice can be heard by the damned. No forgiveness necessary. In the light, that's my way. Break off all vexations. It's never over, yesterday. I'm the time exile. I am the Ghost of Vengeance. (Calm Madness) I'm the time exile. (I'm the time exile) Sever, tear, fear There is no salvation for the unforgiven. God knows, there are those who will pay the hand that is extended to them. No forgiveness necessary In the light, that's my way. Break off all vexations. Today, which will never begin. I'm the time exile. I am the Ghost of Vengeance. (Calm Madness) I don't need your sympathy. Why won't anyone leave me alone? If I had a comrade... I wonder what I would tell them. Yes, yes, I knew the answer. In the light, that's not your way. Break off all vexations. Break off all vexations. It's never over, yesterday. No, don't stand still. In the light My vengeance will be sacrificed. For the light The pain kills the pain. The hardest road lies ahead. I will be a mirror of the world. I'm not the exile Break off all vexations. (That's not your way) You are not the exile
@@TheQuilavaQueen There was an album at some point with an insert that had these lyrics. I don't own it but the images are available online with a lot of snooping.
Bridget has a hard time finding who she is at the start of the song, and also in her Arcade mode story. By the end of both the song and the Arcade mode, she feels she has a better understanding of who she is. Its why it's one of my favorites out of the GGST soundtrack. Also, yes, "the town inside me" is both metaphorical for her character, and she literally feels she can't go back to her hometown because of their customs and beliefs.
Bridget is a man... He was forced to be a girl or else exiled, went out to prove his worth as a man, the moral of Bridget’s story in the prior games is that being girly doesn’t make him any less of a man, people ignore every “I'm a boy” for one “girl is fine”, said “girl is fine” occurs in a suboptimal ending, the rest of Bridget’s story either has him saying he’s a boy or not mentioning gender at all, Ky's lesson to Bridget was to stay true to oneself (human) despite what people see (Gear), which only makes sense if Bridget stays true to oneself (boy) despite what people see (girl) & Bridget’s song also says “No matter what changes, [it] will never change me”
@@Nakeethus_Hunter Stop lying. She pretended to be a girl only in public. She went out to get rid of the superstition to make her parents feel better. There was no moral in prior games and she was a joke character. Strive's endings are all canon. You're deliberately ignoring ALL dialog in her arcade mode and what they talk about. Bridget being true to herself IS her being a girl and your idea of the story makes zero sense. Why is she afraid of being EXACTLY WHAT HER PARENTS WANT as if that would disappoint them? Why is she afraid living as a boy would change her life WHEN SHE HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS? You have no answer to either of these because your idea of the story makes zero sense and requires ignoring them. Also love how you left out she said "I'm a girl" happily. You are just a liar.
Long story short, Bridget is a transgender-female character and her song and story mode relect her struggle to come to terms with accepting who she is.
@@kyero8724 Go watch her arcade endings, dude. It's all about her accepting herself and not changing no matter what. She even says the words "I AM a girl" to Goldlewis when he uses her nickname. And she's not the only LGBTQ+ character in the game. Testament is androgynous and goes by "they." It's at least gender-dysphoria adjacent. Not to mention Strive's story as a whole is about attempting to find peace with the life given to you, despite what society and the government may say. Practically every character follows that path, arcade or main. You don't have to like it, but the echos are at least there.
Guilty Gear songs all take you on a journey even if you have no idea what's going on. That's my take on them. It's weird, I'm confused, but I still enjoy it and I can't look away.
It seems others pretty much covered a lot of the character's themes here, but I will add this one that I don't hear much about: Baiken's line of "Sever.....Tear! Fear!" comes from Baiken being a "counter" player. She is a parry character, who could wait and respond to attacks with counterattacks and counter throws of her own. Which fits in with her character as a samurai/ronin.
Crazy how thematic and complementary Testament & Bridget are to those of us who know these characters' stories. Talk about a crazy coincidence. Both embody very different aspects of the theme of finding one's place in the world😅
You need to do a video for the new guilty gear trailer for ABA!! Including her character guide video they released alongside her trailer! Wishing you both the best!
Loved every guilty gear reaction from you guys, always great to hear your input and theories. 😊 And while maybe late to comment, i do hope you get to react to Gekkos Squirrel video explaining the themes. It's great watch and i feel could be an amazing finish to this reactions. Love from Mexico ❤!
So first things first, all three of these characters have a queer aspect to them! Baiken is probably the shakiest in canon, but she has some dialogue in one of the old games where she says she forsakes her womanhood, which would make her agender, but honestly I'm not sure if she really means that or if it came from self hatred. Testament tho is definently agender, or nonbinary depending on who you ask. Everyone uses they/them for them but as you can see the song actually alternates between he and she. Lastly, Bridget is a trans woman, and her story that I'm gonna drop later in this comment is ALL about that. When Baiken was a child her entire village save herself was killed in a Gear attack. She lost an arm and an eye during the event. All she remembers from that night is a vision of That Man and his henchmens sillohettes against the blaze of the wreckage. Ever since then she's sworn revenge on That Man, vowing to take his life. Baikens story is a lot like May believe it or not. Both of them are Japanese, both orphaned by the crusades, the only major difference is that May was saved by Johnny, and created a found family based on that connection, but Baiken was alone for much longer. Eventually though she did make connections with characters like Anji Mito and Delilah who showed her kindness, and in the latest story she ended up giving up on revenge, choosing to live a normal life with Anji and Delilah instead. That's what that whole emotional segment at the end of her song was about. Testament is yet another war orphan of the crusade era. They were adopted by a legendary man named Kliff Undersn who was the leader of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, humanity's hope in the war against Gears. Testament was nonviolent but was inspired by their old man, so against Kliffs wishes they joined the Order, but unfortunately were lost and presumed dead during a mission. In reality though they were taken by the Post War Administration Bureau and turned into a Gear against their will, because the PWAB was trying to learn ways to fight fire with fire pretty much, cuz they somehow did not learn their lesson already. Testaments mind was quickly overwhelmed by Justices control over all other Gears, and eventually Testament and Kliff met on the battlefield, where Kliff was forced to kill them. Miraculously though they somehow lived, and even after Justice was sealed in a dimensional prison Testament was *still* under her control. They orchestrated the 2nd Holy Order tournament to find blood sacrifices to break the seal, and when Sol tore through the bracket and defeated them, they resorted to using their own blood as sacrifice, however Justice was killed by Sol as quickly as she was freed, which in turn finally freed Testaments mind. They wandered for awhile without purpose until they encountered a curious being named Dizzy. Dizzy is the daughter of Justice, and despite looking like a human she is just as much a Gear as her mother was, complete with all the same powers Justice did. She was taken in by a village when she was a baby but when she aged rapidly, reaching adulthood in just 3 years, the village grew fearful and banished her, and that's when she met Testament. Dizzy isn't violent like her mother, all she longs for is connection and love, so Testament vowed to protect her at all cost, viewing her as a Messiah that could bring immense change to society. Eventually word got out that Justice had a daughter and a bounty was put out on her life that everyone and their mother sought to claim. In canon Sol was the one to reach her despite Testaments efforts, but before he put Dizzy down Ky stepped in and vouched for her, believing by that point that not all Gears were evil, and Sol accepted it. Dizzy went on to live with the Jellyfish pirates for awhile before leaving to see the world with Ky, and eventually fell in love with him. Testaments time with Dizzy changed the way they saw the world, and in the time since they have been using their immortal life to the fullest, picking up tons of hobbies and occupations. They're even forklift certified! Bridget was born in the UK to rich parents, part of a set of twin boys. The village they lived in though had a superstition that twins of the same gender were a bad omen, and had a barbaric rule that the youngest must be put to death or exiled. Bridgets parents didn't like either option obviously so they decided to conceal Bridgets birth sex and raise her as a daughter. Bridget turned out pretty normal but she saw that her parents were burdened by the guilt of their decision no matter how much she tried to convince them she was fine, so when she was 13 she went out on her own accord to prove the superstition wrong. Her plan was to go out and make tons of money, to bring prosperity to the village, and she would present as a man during this. She was one of the people who sought out the bounty on Dizzy, but later they ran into eachother on the Mayship and became good friends. 5 years have passed since she left the village, and in that time she became the most successful bounty hunter in the world and completely shattered her villages fears. Something was missing that she couldn't explain though, so she sought out Ky Kiskes help. Him and Goldlewis both fought her around this time and both caught onto her worries and pushed her to be honest with herself, and that led her to accepting that she's happier living as a girl no matter what implications that may have, only she can decide that for herself. One of my favorite details is the last lyric of her theme: "I can feel the light, even after the sun goes down". It mirrors Ky's themes final lyric: "hoping to fill the world with all kinds of light". Ky's story in itself is an allegory for queerness, and that moral actually ended rubbing off on a real queer character in universe, and I think that's cool! Bridget is my main and the character that finally made me buy the game after admiring it for so long from afar. I'm trans myself so she really speaks to me. Also Bridgets teddy bear is possessed by an angry warrior spirit and his name is Roger and he's hilarious and I love him cuz he's mean to everyone else but him and Bridget are thick as thieves. Also her yoyo was a gift from her father, and it packs a super meaty punch. The tech on it resembles Sols weapon which is interesting to say the least considering the lore around Sols weapon.
I guess you can say that about Baiken but there are a lot of meanings that kind of contradict that. That and her chest grows every game.... She always felt more like a tomboy to me and in Stive she's literally acting like a mother through her whole story. But honestly some of these character swings are not exactly set up well. Like Bridget spent how many games trying to be a boy? And they just flipped it in Strive. Not really sure that's positive nor good story telling. But that's me.
@@dagonofthedepths I mean you can have big tits and be agender lol, agender/nb/trans people don't have to look any specific way. Also Bridgets story makes sense to me as a queer person, sometimes it really does just happen like that, specifically the spontaneous realization part. If she had been in Xrd then maybe there would've been more build up to it, but according to Daisuke her arc is something he was thinking about for awhile iirc.
@@gatr2897 I'm talking narratively and artistically. Like Baiken you can interpret how you want. Art is subjective but artistic intent tends to be very directed. Like Testement is a good example. There is a clear intent to design them as non-binary. Then never act like they pull either way on the spectrum, and their looks and outfit is clearly designed to either have extreme examples of both male and female dress in equal measures or their outfit isn't holding to either. Baiken is a tsundere that is constantly strutting with her chest out and now she has a daughter. I mean your looking at it, it seems like the intent way to make an angry tom boy not an agender character. But yeah, Bridget the problem is 100% the buildup. If that arc happened 1 or 2 games back or even if she appeared in the main story and they set it up there, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But it felt so fast that it read to me that she just gave up. Also, it felt Goldlewis was doing what her village was doing since jump. If you saw those doubts appeared earlier, it sets up those interactions. Sure, it can happen like that in real life but that's still bad story telling.
A video featuring Bridget fron Guilty Gear, I'm sure the comment section will be both respectful and pleasant. .. .... ...... Hmm, where's the usual insufferable bigots that are found on every piece of Bridget content?
Testament's theme represents so many different sides of their character extremely well, I love watching people react to it! (Now I'm waiting for Drift and The Circle, those 2 never disappoint)
Fun Facts: Baiken was originally the first Guilty Gear villain. She no longer is, but takes care of a character you haven’t seen yet. Testament is neither he or she. Testament is Testament Bridget is trans. Originally was a boy. Now is a girl and became a trans icon in the Guilty Gear community
YEAH LET'S GO! Baiken is by far the coolest character in term of just pure cool imo, cooler than Johnny I would say. The buddhist chanting in her song is so goddamn cool Testament is my favorite character though, I love them a lot they are literally me Bridget
Good thing you just reacted to some more Guilty Gear themes. The next DLC Fighter was just announced, A.B.A from one of the previous GG titles. And yes, her name's an obvious reference to ABBA.
Normally not a huge fan of their analyses, but it's nice how they both picked up easily on the broad meaning behind Bridget's theme, even if the exact core of it eludes them. It may seem obvious, but it still surprises me how many other theme analysts fail even that (usually due to either a laser focus on instrumentals only, or simple disregard since the song lies outside of their preferred genres). Shame they kind of fumbled on my favorite song ("Mirror of the World") but to be fair to them, it does require some outside understanding to fully get, and I know they're not exactly music people. It didn't help that a LOT of the lyrics were messed up.
Bridget is a guy before Guilty Gear Strive but Ishiwatari and the director of GG Strive confirms that Bridget self-identifies as a woman and uses her/she pronouns.

Things you have not exercised critical thinking for: > Bridget was forced to be a girl or else exiled > Bridget went out to prove his worth as a man > the moral of Bridget’s story in the prior games is that being girly doesn’t make him any less of a man > ignores every “I'm a boy” for one “girl is fine” > said “girl is fine” occurs in a suboptimal ending > the rest of Bridget’s story either has him saying he’s a boy or not mentioning gender at all > Ky's lesson to Bridget was to stay true to oneself (human) despite what people see (Gear), which only makes sense if Bridget stays true to oneself (boy) despite what people see (girl) > Bridget’s song also says “No matter what changes, [it] will never change me” “but brisket trans girl!!! daisuke confirmed it so its not transphobic!!!1”
@@Nakeethus_Hunter Way to lie. You have no answer to either of these because your idea of the story makes zero sense and requires ignoring them.
yeah testament was agender before the government converted them, and plenty of gears like sol and dizzy are very clearly gendered. testament just happens to be agender, separate from anything else in their lore
i he had a lore but yea it was Trow in the toilet pretty much the only important thing now is, he was a guy and now was groomed to identifies as a gird because (pandering by the dev to US) and now is she. nothing else matter now, i mean the lore is that in hes village having twins of the same gender is a bad omen and one must die so, he's parent past him as a girl. eventually he leaves the village, because he thinks he was a burden for he's parent and brother, he started working as a bounty hunter to bring more wealth to he's village and parents but also to try to live as a man, it kind of fails because he had outdated wanted posters, then he tried to make a traveling music group, which also failed, Briget has been more of a comic character, also he still looked girly and was mistaken as one to the point he did fooled Jhonny but Bridget never and i mean never hide the fact the he is male and always corrected people that mistaken him for a girl, by saying in joking manner: o yea i am a guy alright these clothe well that's a long story. was never insecure on that. and these misadventures made him secure on himself and stronger character, after all these he returned to he's village and discovered something happened hes parent and brother had disappear, so he set of to search for him. if he returned it was leading to having an adventure searching for he's brother. all good and all until strive happened and Arcsys woke pandering settle in, now apparently the character is insecure in what to think of himself (boy or girl) out of nowhere and that search for he's brother don't matter anymore, pretty much got turned in a token trans character after being told he could be anything and said he is a girl now. that is why is said the character lore until now doesn't matter and was throw in the toilet, he's character growth doesn't matter, and family doesn't matter. those 2 where he's defining characteristics which the butchered. so yea now all what Briget is, is a trans girl and that is all there is to "her".
@@juliox9 Great job lying! She pretended to be a girl only in public. She went out to get rid of the superstition to make her parents feel better. Also love how you brought up a NONCANON ENDING from a game that was never canon. "WAGH WAGH, WHY DID THEY NOT FOLLOW UP ON THIS STUFF FROM A NONCANON GAME? IT BAD WRITING BECAUSE ME NO UNDERSTAND!" This is how you people sound to sane people. Also, her growing from trying to get rid of the village superstition and live as a boy to make her parents feel better to doing what makes her personally happy IS growth, but you people can't stand reality.
Testament and Bridget are such a contrast to me of how to handle a character's identity properly. I've come to despise bridget entirely because of the fandom, despite loving the character in the old games. Testament on the other hand is in and out of the game over such controversies. Became one of my favorite characters.
Ah... """Bridget"""... the writing decision that made Twindel (MK11 Sindel) look like Tolkien in comparison and a complete butchery of an iconic character.
@@sharzinlalebazri5673 I don't either. The fact that you call trans healthcare "Child mutilation", shows that you have no idea of trans healthcare. Gender reasigning surgery isn't legal for people under 20 years old in any country where gender reasigning surgery is legal

Fun Fact: The chanting in Baiken’s theme is the Mantra Of Light from Buddhism
Translation:
om abogya beiroshanō makabodara mani handoma
“Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra”
jinbara harabari tayaun narakuni utauwa rokkonshoujo
“Turn over to me the jewel, lotus, and radiant light. Chant from the naraka, rokkonshoujo”
(Rokkonshoujo is a common Buddhist phrase which roughly means to become closer to nirvana by losing the six parts of being I.e body, mind, spirit, etc)
i thought rokkonshoujo was a double entendre between the Buddhist phrase and just rock on girl
@@beo3828 She is NOT 100s of years old lmao. She's around Anji's age, who was only in his 20s during GG1.

We don’t know her age. But she is absolutely older than Anji
@@beo3828 She grew up in a Colony after the destruction of Japan. Common misunderstanding. She was a child "near the end" of the crusades, Japan's destruction was the start of the war.

Another great batch of characters 👀
Baiken is a character that's been around since the very first GG game, so her theme is one of those that's technically going through the entirety of her character development in the series.
So throughout the series, Baiken struggles with her desire for vengeance eating up her entire life, basically not allowing herself to live and exist beyond that purpose-
The chanting in her theme is a Buddhist mantra which is supposed to be used for the funeral of someone believed to be destined to go to hell to free them of their bad karma, which relates to the way Baiken believes herself to be damned and her life already forfeit.
The current conclusion of her character arc is spoilers for the latest game, so I might hold off on it at this point :^Ic
Testament is another classic character from the very first game- as you guessed, they are officially referred to as they/them in English (tho earlier translations used he/him until series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari clarified it) and they are non-binary (leaning towards agender)
Their history is a pretty tragic one, hailing from Switzerland, like many others of the cast, they became an orphan during the Crusades.
Thanks so much for giving us more info on these three characters 😀
i picked up strive about 2 weeks ago and I've been obesesd with Baiken and her lore. thanks for explaining the meaning behind her theme!
I wish I could do anything with even half the confidence that Baiken puts into her walk.
I don't comment very often but I really appreciate how accepting you guys are of things like Testament's identity. It's super refreshing
Quick lore for each character
When baiken was young her village was destroyed by the villain known as… THAT MAN!
Thanks for the quick breakdown on each character 😀
The chant in Baiken's song is the mantra of light. So it means "Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra. Turn over to me the jewel, lotus and radiant light."
Baiken: Local woman too angry to die (she chilled out now looking after a child who could nuke a city)
Bridget: One of twin boys who was raised as a girl due to her town's superstition. Goes on a journey to prove it wrong, but she now accepted herself for who she is.
Testament:
Testament just kinda chillen
Testament: used to be evil and is kinda just hanging out drinking tea now
Testament: Used to be a menace, now they're a chill person who got a driver's license, a forklift operator certification and own a construction firm

Bridget....... everyone's favorite little sister.
Bridget is a man
@@Nakeethus_Hunter no she isn't
Yeah he totally is
My favourite part of both 'Mirror of the World' and 'The Town Inside Me' is how the lyrics change throughout the chorus
In Baiken's theme, there's a lot of self-punishment and regret as she repeats the words 'I'm the time exile', until near the end where the song interrupts itself and says immediately after 'no, don't stand still'.
With each new reaction to the Guilty Gear OST, I get more and more excited for when you finally react to Happy Chaos's song

A fun fact about Testament: Guilty Gear Strive is the first English game to use they/them pronouns and say they are non-binary, but in Japanese, Testament has been referred to as x-gender, the Japanese term for non-binary people, since the first Guilty Gear game in 1998.
You are intellectually dishonest 🐀.
@@jrpgnation6375 no, Testament has been nonbinary an confirmed as such for decades.

I, as a cisgender straight male, always manage to well up whenever I hear Bridget's theme. nice, finally some more guilty gear OSTs reactions! absolutely love them.
also, the Japanese lyrics in Baiken's song is text of Mantra of Light, popular Buddism suntra in Japan.
Bridget’s theme makes me near tears nearly every time I hear it it’s just so beautiful
Even Nagoryuki admitted she's a better swordsman than him
Baiken is a fun character.

Baikens theme reminds me of my family praying at temple or special events
Minor oopsie. 🤗
(Calm Madness)
I'm the time exile.
(I'm the time exile)
Sever, tear, fear
There is no salvation for the unforgiven.
God knows, there are those who will pay
the hand that is extended to them.
No forgiveness necessary
In the light, that's my way.
Break off all vexations.
Today, which will never begin.
I'm the time exile.
I am the Ghost of Vengeance.
(Calm Madness)
I don't need your sympathy.
Why won't anyone leave me alone?
If I had a comrade...
I wonder what I would tell them.
Yes, yes, I knew the answer.
In the light, that's not your way.
Break off all vexations.
Break off all vexations.
It's never over, yesterday.
No, don't stand still.
In the light
My vengeance will be sacrificed.
For the light
The pain kills the pain.
The hardest road lies ahead.
I will be a mirror of the world.
I'm not the exile
Break off all vexations. (That's not your way)
You are not the exile
Out of curiosity where did you get this?

Long story short, Bridget is a transgender-female character and her song and story mode relect her struggle to come to terms with accepting who she is.
no he isnt. the writer shoe horned that bull shit in for twitter trends. Bridget never thought he was a girl or had any sort of confusion.
@@kyero8724 Go watch her arcade endings, dude. It's all about her accepting herself and not changing no matter what. She even says the words "I AM a girl" to Goldlewis when he uses her nickname.
And she's not the only LGBTQ+ character in the game. Testament is androgynous and goes by "they."
It's at least gender-dysphoria adjacent. Not to mention Strive's story as a whole is about attempting to find peace with the life given to you, despite what society and the government may say. Practically every character follows that path, arcade or main. You don't have to like it, but the echos are at least there.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do more of these
Woah. The two songs I've been looking forward to y'all getting to the most, AND the theme of my main all in one vid? You spoil me.
Guilty Gear songs all take you on a journey even if you have no idea what's going on. That's my take on them. It's weird, I'm confused, but I still enjoy it and I can't look away.
It seems others pretty much covered a lot of the character's themes here, but I will add this one that I don't hear much about:
Baiken's line of "Sever.....Tear!

Came for Baiken and Brisket
Hey there wen you are going to be live stream today or next Friday
Fight Night Friday!

Someone tell the lore of Bridget, i cant do it justice enough.
i he had a lore but yea it was Trow in the toilet pretty much the only important thing now is, he was a guy and now was groomed to identifies as a gird because (pandering by the dev to US) and now is she. nothing else matter now, i mean the lore is that in hes village having twins of the same gender is a bad omen and one must die so, he's parent past him as a girl. eventually he leaves the village, because he thinks he was a burden for he's parent and brother, he started working as a bounty hunter to bring more wealth to he's village and parents but also to try to live as a man, it kind of fails because he had outdated wanted posters, then he tried to make a traveling music group, which also failed, Briget has been more of a comic character, also he still looked girly and was mistaken as one to the point he did fooled Jhonny but Bridget never and i mean never hide the fact the he is male and always corrected people that mistaken him for a girl, by saying in joking manner: o yea i am a guy alright these clothe well that's a long story. was never insecure on that. and these misadventures made him secure on himself and stronger character, after all these he returned to he's village and discovered something happened hes parent and brother had disappear, so he set of to search for him. if he returned it was leading to having an adventure searching for he's brother.
all good and all until strive happened and Arcsys woke pandering settle in, now apparently the character is insecure in what to think of himself (boy or girl) out of nowhere and that search for he's brother don't matter anymore, pretty much got turned in a token trans character after being told he could be anything and said he is a girl now. that is why is said the character lore until now doesn't matter and was throw in the toilet, he's character growth doesn't matter, and family doesn't matter. those 2 where he's defining characteristics which the butchered.
so yea now all what Briget is, is a trans girl and that is all there is to "her".
