How much difference do you think it made?
Pre lockdown Mimi and me tried climbing without any chalk, it was a super fun challenge and interesting to see how much difference it made!
Hope you enjoy the video! Let me know what you think?
(Also, I promise I didn't copy @magmidt video, I filmed this one on the 16th of December. Just a weird coincidence that we uploaded a similar video in the same week. haha I don't want people thinking I'm copying the big dog!)

Hi!! Thanks for watching! I hope you like the video, let me know what you think? Also for those that saw Magnus also made a video video about climbing with no chalk this week, I promise I didn’t copy I filmed this video on the 16TH of December.
Do all climbing channels have a group chat or something 😂😂
Haha if only! Maybe that’s something we need to start! 😂
Great minds think alike 😄
Haha they must do 😉
No bouldering since November in Germany, miss this so much :/
O no 😔 that really sucks. We have just gone into another lockdown so all our gyms are shut too 😢
@@JoshRundle With your mask skills it's no surprise
Sorry if you think we where irresponsible. We had our masks off when we where climbing which is aloud by the gym. The gym was also very quiet with minimal people and of course we kept our distance.
We definitely didn’t spread or get corona I know this because I had a test not long after.
Thanks for watching, I hope you liked the video.
@@JoshRundle Just an irresponsible gym, which I wish I had because I'm tired of not climbing.
They really are not irresponsible, it’s the same rule all across the country. They are really safe, you have to book sessions and they won’t allow too many people in the building at one time which makes it easy to keep your distance.
I hope your gym opens soon.
Thanks for the upload! I really like to see you and lovely Mimi climb 😊
Thank you for watching :)
Looking strong Mimi💪
hey! what about me ;)
Loving my feature in this video. Thanks for the beta guys 👏keep up the great content
Haha thanks for featuring! Anytime, hopefully see you there soon! Thank you 😊
Cool video guys. So yes Magnus has also done a similar video recently and one of the things he and Pete were discussing was whether or not adding this type of thing into a training routine might actually make you stronger as you’re having to squeeze and pull maybe 10% harder than normal to complete a bloc. Do you think this is true and would you add chalk-free sessions to your training?
Thank you 😊. Yea I watched some of that video it was cool. O nice I didn’t see that but that’s really interesting!
I guess it would depends on the type of Boulder, like if you where just slipping off the holds from being too sweaty 🥵 it might not help that much. It might be worth it though, I imagine it could help. But for me I recon I’ll keep using chalk, maybe it makes more difference for them because they can climb most of the boulders at their gym.
What do you think?
@@JoshRundle Yeah I think I’d agree. One point Magnus made was that he felt it would help more for routes than boulders as it would a) save time and therefore efficient and b) make you be more precise with your hand placements. Personally I think they both have a point but at the level of which I climb, it’s certainly not going to make much difference lol
Yea that’s a good point it probably would be better with sport climbing than bouldering. Me too, if it’s too easy I would just try something harder.
that gym looks super cool and you guys are great climbers! love the video!
- I also hate slabs
Interesting watch. I personally climb without chalk at the gym and brush the holds i can reach before attempts. when I climb on rope, i do use chalk and a chalk bag but usually only for my finger tips. It works for me
Do you think you could start including font grades when editing?
I roughly know what each V grade is but it'd be a lot easier to see the font grades too since I usually use those! :)
Good video though 👌🏻
Yea V grades are a bit confussing if your not used to them, I still have to check sometimes. Ill try my best :) the main problem I think would be that some V grades overlap Font grades e.g. V8 is 7b/7b+, V5 is 6c/6c+. So could be a bit confusing...
Thanks for watching :) pleased you liked it
I like you guys and your videos. Really nice people good editing... Having watched most of your videos here's what I would like to see after this pandemic. Josh pick a team of you and your strongest friends take on other RUclipsrs in a head to head for example the bobats? Do you think your team could beat them? I do!! ☺️
Thanks so much for watching them! I'm really pleased you like my videos :) I really, really want to do a collab with some other RUclipsrs this year, I was actually planning one with another channel but then the new lockdown got in the way. Hopefully once the lockdown/pandemic is over we can make it work. Ooo I dont know the Bobat team is pretty strong! Hopefully we can find out if we can this year :)
I feel like climbing with a mask on might be even worse haha, my face would be covered in sweat.
9:55 the guy lying behind 😂
haha Being a boulderer is a hard life
Awesome video! What chalk bag is that? Looks awesome!
Thank you 😊. It’s from Organic, they make really great chalk bags, each one is different too which is cool.
@@JoshRundle oh cool! I'll check it out! Thank you :)
Pretty much depend on how cold it is. If it is around zero, chalk has minimal effect for me.
Yea that’s what we said in the video. Because it was so cold in the gym it wasn’t really too bad, but in summer it would be desperate. 😅
Don't let magnus know that or he will hunt you down! :D
Haha I wouldn’t fancy my chances
Hi, I am new into bouldering, do you both guys do any exercise besides bouldering? If so, could you please explain what else do you do and how intense is it?
Hi! Awesome climbing is the best! I can't speak for Mimi but I can tell you what I do. I do quite a lot of different exercises that help me with my climbing.
A great place to start is with a TRX or Rings, you can do so many different types of exercises on them from core to biceps, and it's really easy to adjust the difficulty of the exercises too. My favourites and ones I have been doing for a while are T,Y,I and W. They are really great at improving shoulder strength and stability. So I do T,Y,I on my back (facing the sky) and front (facing the floor) and then the W's I do just on my back. (if you don't know what T,Y,I and W are google will do a better job explaining it than me).
I also do some other exercises too like:
Deadlifts (careful, make sure your form is right)
bicep curls
shoulder press
bench press
windscreen wipers
V - sits
one-legged bridge ( if that's what its called)
weighted pull-ups
press-ups
and a few other things.
But I think when your new to climbing the best way to improve is just to climb a lot and focus on technique. That will get you much better at climbing and a lot quicker than training will to start with. It will also help you build a base and then when you have that you can start training. In my opinion anyway.
This is a really good article by a very famous coach called Neil Gresham about training for beginner climbers - www.climber.co.uk/training-how-to/training/15-training-tips-for-beginners/#:~:text=A%20good%20climbing%20warm%2Dup,hip%20circles%20and%20leg%20swings.
I hope that helped a bit :)
@@JoshRundle thanks for the reply.
No worries, hoped it helped 😊
10:33 To be tall is not always an advantage in climbing
Haha true that! Still got the bump to prove it 😉
I love chalk so much, I tried climbing without it the other day and it's a completely different experience
Me too! Did you find yourself loosing more skin too? I'm going to stick to with chalk I think.
@@JoshRundle I mostly was just getting frustrated because my hands got so sweaty. But yeah, I think it did make me lose more skin overall!
@@courtclimbs I hate that slippy hand feeling. Me too!
My partner doesn't use chalk. He can get up an uber credit card crimpy 5.12 without chalk. He'll give in and use it with slopers though.
Interesting video idea! Did I pass you guys at new quarry today?
Thanks 😊. Yea we where there today for a little bit.
Nice! I hope you found something fun to climb. Keep up the good work with the bouldering videos 👍
We did thanks, I hope you did too 😊. Thank you 🙏
+1 for climbers agaisnt slabs 😂
haha exactly! I hate slabs, always will!
You and Magnus both said no chalk will lead to more skin lost. Wouldn't reduced friction mean you would lose less skin, not more like you're saying?
*New to climbing and I was getting flappers every time until I stopped using a lot of chalk, but that could just be my hands callousing more... I'm not sure.
I think you lose more skin because your skin is softer without chalk and it sweats more so when you're holding on to rough volumes/holds then you lose more.
That's interesting I wouldn't have expected that. It could be callouses, when I first started climbing I was always getting flapper but I very rarely get them now unless it's from a really sharp hold. Or maybe it's a bit different for different people?
I reckon half the thing is a mental game, its like if you put a camera on someone they go harder
Yea definitely, I always find myself chalking up when I don't really need to. Although there is a point where it gets pretty slippy.
This is cool too see because I honestly never climb with chalk. Only doing v5, v6 and on a good day v7 so not the most insane routes but I feel like no chalk really conditions your figures and hands for strength and durability seeing as you'll develope more of a rugged grip rather than having to depend on a substance for grip
It was Ingres to try! I don’t think I’ll be stopping to use chalk though, especially on those hot days! That’s cool you don’t climb with chalk! Yea that makes sense, do you think your grip strength has improved too?
@@Jacob0481 most gyms will not allow you to climb barefoot my guy
I didn't use chalk for the first four and a half years of climbing ^^. (Up to 7b on a moonboard)
But now I started using it, just that i don't make the holds greasy for other people.
Wow that's really cool and very impressive! Did you find on really small holds it was a problem or was it ok? That's nice of you :)
First
Thanks for watching!
What is the purpose of wearing a mask at the gym if you are going to remove or move it around your face every five seconds? Not trolling, just curious about the safety protocols in your country/gym.
In principle, the probability of exposure to infectious particles of any size is increased within 1-2m of an infected person. A mask (mouth-nose protection or mouth-nose covering) can reduce the risk of transmission via particles of any size in the immediate vicinity around an infected person.
Prolonged stays in small, poorly ventilated or unventilated rooms may increase the likelihood of transmission by aerosols even over a distance greater than 1.5 m, especially if an infectious person emits a particularly large number of small particles (aerosols), stays in the room for a long time and exposed persons breathe in particularly deeply or frequently. Due to the accumulation and distribution of aerosols in the room, keeping the minimum distance for infection prevention may no longer be sufficient.
Effective air exchange can reduce the aerosol concentration in a room. Transmissions outdoors are rare overall. If the minimum distance is maintained, the probability of transmission outdoors is very low due to air movement.
@@jonasq1853 Yes, of course, my main concerne in the video it's about the risk of transmission by particles deployed in the surface of the objects inside the gym, the habit of touching your face or removing your mask constantly exposes yourself to contamination through those particles in infected surfaces. The Sars-CoV-2 can survive in polymeric surfaces for up to 72h.
@@Pqno2 Maybe somewhere else, but this is where chalk comes into play. There were a study at the "De Montfort University" that prooved that the infectous particales of a virus, with the same structure as covid19 are reduces by 99% in just one minute on a chalked hold. It was already published for liquid chalk, but know also for powdery chalk. So use ur chalk ^^
@@iGlobly Woah, didn't knew it! Could you please share the DOI of this article? I would really like to read it :)
Hi, pretty interesting conversation, thanks for sharing :)
I don't know the science of spreading Covid that well apart from what they say on the news but I can explain the centre's rules, when your climbing your aloud to take off you mask but when you're on the mats then you must have it on. The gym in this video has a really great ventilation system which cycles through the air all the time. This is designed for chalk but I imagine it helps quite a lot with Corona. When we where filming it was the middle of the day and there was hardly anyone in the gym and we always obeyed the rules when it came to keeping a 2m distance from other climbers. In my opinion, this would have given us a very small chance of spreading or catching Corona.
Thanks so much for watching, I hope you're staying safe and well.
Not as hard as Marcus
Who’s Marcus? 😉
You know, the chief chalk salesperson 🤣
Haha 😂 o that Marcus, I know him.
am i the only one who doesn't climb with chalk? 😳
You might be 😅, how do you find it?
@@JoshRundle maybe im not climbing hard enough :0
@@stephpostsometimes I don't know, I think it helps whatever level.
*Cough* copy cats! *cough*
Haha I was waiting for someone to say something. I filmed it on the 16th of December so couldn’t have copied. 😊 very weird coincidence though.
Love the climbing with no masks... sort of a big middle finger to everyone who's died of COVID so far :)
If that’s really how you see it then I’m very sorry. I did not have COVID, the gym was basically empty and I did not get covid.
Sorry to have offended you.
@@JoshRundle Don't apologise. It's not hard to offend someone these days... 🙄
Yea there are countless studies that show that masks do absolutely nothing in terms of getting sick in fact you are more likely to get sick when wearing a mask but not everyone is blessed with intelligence. Its peoples simple understanding of germs is the problem alot of people have a hard time understanding that. If you think you need a mask you just lack education. Maybe one day youll learn though!
