Equius never willingly hurt someone (as far as we know, and by “hurt” I mean like punched them), he actually cared about Nepeta and was one of the few people who didn’t call her the, and I quote,“kittycat shipper cave girl” and he literally built Vriska a robot arm with no preparation or payment. (again, as far as we know.) Vriska literally just showed up and went “heeeeeeeey, can i have a ro8ot arm? Thaaaaaaaanks ::::)” and he just did it. He was weird, and a jerk sometimes, but other then that, he was actually pretty nice and deserved way better.
He also built Tavros a new pair of legs while trapped on a meteor with limited supplies

I mean, he did punch imps and other underlings, but everyone except tavros did that. But yeah, he was probably one of the most helpful trolls, building at least 3 roboticbprostetics for his friends, and everyone he helped was lower than him. Side not, I'm surprised he didn't build something for terezi, cuz he built something for everyone else in that circle of revange, maybe he built her her cain?
And for the low blood he respected soullux because he's strength and programming. And had a high respect for a mutant Karkat. I think he doesn't care much for the hemospectrem as he lets

It's scary how in line Equius tries to be when it comes to his place on the hemospectrum. No one tells him to overly respect Gamzee or Feferi or Eridan, or put down lower blooded trolls, but he does. He must be really fricking proud of his history. In fact, none of the trolls really changed from how their ancestors were. But it's supposed to be like that heh.

This song, nor it's lyrics, are not nihilistic in any sense of the word. Nihilism doesn't mean nothing in general, it means there is no meaning. In Paradox Space, even "Nothing" is meaningful.

Necroposting here, but this song really conveys at the same time, what was Equius' end, but also what the potential he had.
I like to think that this is why he's so strong too

This could also be why it was just better for him to fight _empty_ handed, as his weapon is nothing!
I might not be the best person to talk about it, but there's definetely something to be said about how reading into narratives not intended to be taken seriousely can result in some incredible and thrilling interpretations! Equius is simply a joke to Hussie, but perhaps out of spite he crafted an interesting narrative about submission to an abusive system - and how such complience cannot yield a result favourable for things that you love and for yourself. A flawed system always dooms it's actors, an abusive person always hurts, at a certain point resisting is a must - not a whim. These are the things that I have personally found out for myself, thinking about one of my favourite characters - Equius and the unfortunate happy ending that he got

I believe Hussie has stated that to write all these charachters he needed something to like in each one of them. That means there is something in Equius that he at least appreciates. Otherwise I completely agree, Homestuck has at least one reference to so many different philosophies while creating something entirely new in it's nature.
For example, while we are on the subject of politics, the entire hemocaste of Alternia and Beforus was designed to serve one more than the other, which naturally lead to rebellion and discrimination, but in both cases it still managed to create a technologically advanced society with the capacity to take over worlds.
And after everything it didn't really matter which cause was the righteous one, both came to an end caused by someone from the other point of view.
I think Equius struggles a lot with his place in troll society. He's strong, a trait we are told is correlated with being high on the hemospectrum. But that strength doesnt always help him - he's constantly breaking things without meaning to, and despite being represented by the Saggitarius symbol he cannot use a bow without snapping it in half.
His thing for being ordered around is played for laughs, but i cannot help but read it as a reaction to this. He tries to conform, to follow the social order where those below him obey him and he obeys the ones above. Gamzee's carefree attitude frustrates him, flying in the face of how highbloods are supposed to act. And yet, he himself has a crush on Aradia, who's at the lowest end of the hemospectrum. He gets all weird about receiving orders from Karkat, who's a mutant, not even on the damn thing. He doesn't fit his role perfectly - he can't. He's a person, and people are never so one-dimensional. So he suppresses those feelings, and they do what feelings always do: slip out. The subversion of the social hierarchy becomes an obsession, something he wants yet refuses to allow himself, "lewd".
There's a tragedy to his character, because arguably he'd be a lot better off without the caste system, and yet he can't let go of it. He's glad to be choked to death by Gamzee because at last he's behaving in accordance with his place in the hemospectrum, at last things make sense.

I enjoy how this does equius. It doesn't just play him off as a joke. It takes what originally was a joke and makes it serious. Equius being void and barely having any effect on anything was more tragic than funny looking back on it seeing how much everyone influenced things in the end. The duality of void and of his character being both simultaneously the strongest of all the trolls but also the weakest as he doesn't use the strength he inherently has due to him being a pacifist. He could have easily beaten Gamzee but he didn't want to. Equius could have saved everything if he wasn't him which is a really tragic fate for him and ultimately was the only thing he did was die and let gamzee kill nepeta and doom the trolls and then go on to pretty much cause a lot of the issues for everyone in the future such as caliborn and Lil cal influencing half of the characters and killing them
this whole song is so tragic but the line "if none of this means anything, then what's my anger for?" just... that brings me back to dark times.

i only just realised the really muted tone of a lot of the song, as compared to the clearer submissive lines, which i think feels like a subtle nod to equius' inner conflict over the whole thing

I particularly like the duality of the chorus because it one interpretation it could be 'nothing is what i deserve' saying i deserve nothing but in another it could be 'nothing is what i deserve' meaning nothing is good enough for me. Just an interesting thought.
I like to think of this as a sort of conflict inside of equius' mind between " I do not deserve anything" and " i deserve more than is possible" due to the whole very hemospectrum focused nature of him, but also Nepeta saying "yo this kinda wack"

I really like this song.
But I am a little sad that there's not much (if any) mention of nepeta, since her song is almost entirely about him.
Well, Nepeta's song focused more on relationships and her declaration (of sorts) of being the support for Karkat and Equius whenever they are ready to open up/need her. "We've all have got a role to play....I am on your side and that's furever..." Clearly she's playing a support role for those she cares about.
Equius' song is more about the things Equius isn't necessarily given, I guess...credit for? (If that's the best wording for it.) Most see it as a sad song in which Equius "inherits nothing" becuase he's an Heir of Void.
If you really take the time to think about it, the wording of the chorus is supposed to be a source of empowerment. The Void Aspect is the most ambiguous aspect due to the lack of comprehension pertaining to the concept of Void/Nnothingness, but the song is saying that doesn't matter.

In short, it's saying Equius inherits the most indestructible, relevant and everlasting Aspect out of them all...and that's a good thing.
a few months late, but I feel that both songs completely center around their classpects (Equius being the Heir of Void, Nepeta being the Rogue of Heart). A rogue 'steals' their aspect to give to others, Nepeta stole her own heart to give to both Karkat and Equius, thus centering her own identity around those two people. They both went too far into their classpects, with Equius letting himself get destroyed and Nepeta sacrificing herself for Equius.
I think their songs were meant to contrast each other. The thing that I think that they have in common though is the loyalty they have to certain things. Nepeta being loyal to her friends and relationships no matter what and Equius feeling obligated to stay loyal to order and a system. I don't doubt that Equius heavily cares about Nepeta but I think that Equius is a bit more socially aware of the hemospectrum and takes it all extremely to heart while Nepeta has the ability to look past superficial aspects like weight social obligations put on people (basically she doesn't care much for what people think about her unless she cares about them). Equius is part of a much higher blood caste so naturally he was raised to present himself a certain way. Also, Equius is the Heir of Void and similar to Sollux(Mage of Doom) he has alot of power but doesn't apply himself when he should.

the double meaning of the Void as nothing SOMEHOW MAKES IT WORSE.
It surprises me how many people misunderstand the "Nothing lasts forever" and such in this song. It's not meaning that no thing can last forever, it's saying that nothing, the very aspect of absence lasts forever.
It's probably both, actually. Double meanings are pretty common in these songs.

I also think the last quote, is something Equius is saying to/thinking about Gamzee. He was born to be the highest in the bloodcast when it comes to landdwellers, the cast that the blue-bloods used to serve. But Gamzee is much too laid-back and carefree (and high), which is much to Eq's dissapointment and dissatisfaction.

This makes me think about Equius's death. It was the most disturbing of them all for me. The thought of being choked out... Your eyes crawling to the top of your head, your face getting blue and feeling cold, and most of all the extreme pain in your chest because you can't breath. And then after, the rope or string just stays there as you lay there. Your killer could've had the manners to take the string off! You're just blue there forever! It's gross!!!

last time I checked he had this weird thing about highbloods, like, fucking obsessed with pleasing them, so when his entire brain was in a conflict, he just kinda froze.

I think hussie mishandled his character, i think hes very interesting and a solid idea for a character however i think his character never got to his full potential

I honestly think Equius' and Terezi's and Eridan's songs are my favorite.

That actually made me think about ARquiusprite at some point and about all that Equius' "giving in" thing.
It was shown in Caliborn's masterpiece that ARquius also took part in fighting him. And it was ARquius who caught and held Caliborn so Dirk could rip out his soul and shove it into Lil Cal, eventually ripping the soul out of ARquius and placing it in that cursed puppet too.
As Dirk's sprite, ARquius definitely knew all about his powers as a Prince of Heart, and I'm certain that he knew what cosequences would follow if he would stand near Caliborn while Dirk was doing his thing - 'cuz he's partially AR, the dude who set in motion the entire "Unite Synchronize". ARquius knew what was waiting for him.
Yet he didn't even hesitate to do what he did. He gave in, but not the way he did when Gamzee was killing him with a bow - that time he *sacrificed* himself in order to help others win. What a dude, guys. What a satisfying character arc that most of people refuse to see because of all that "Equius is a sweaty horsefucking weirdo" crap.

Everytime I hear this I get pissed. While Equius was being strangled by Gamzee Equius could have easily snapped the string and killed Gamzee but he didn't. Instead he just let's it happen causing Nepeta to attack Gamzee getting her killed in the process. If Equius did something - anything! - he and Nepeta would still be alive, and that makes me angry that he didn't do anything.
But then I remember he's the Heir of Void and throughout Homestuck does little to nothing unless absolutely necessary.
Edit: 3 years after I commented this I take back everything I said I'm actually an Equius kinnie now unfortunately

He didn't know Nepeta would die with him. He thought she was safe, and he thought his death wouldn't affect her in a more serious way. He literally thought of himself as nothing. That's why he didn't put up a fight in the end, I think.

the last sentence of your statement makes it so much more upsetting. he literally thought of himself as almost nothing, and pretty much there to please others. you would have thought that because he only does things when necessary, he’d fight back, yet he doesn’t. he doesn’t think anyone, not even nepeta, would spend that much time mourning over his death, nor does he think it’s necessary to live any longer anyways. it makes me sad that equis’ character is so under-appreciated, he really is depressing in an almost fascinating way.
Equius is underrated as hell... if hussie hadnt added so many characters to the cast maybe he'd had gotten more development.
