    Note: I AM NOT A LAWYER and I CAN NOT give legal advice. This video is a /start/ of creative commons, copyright, and the laws around it. If you have further questions, I highly recommend consulting with a professional. IF YOU HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS: Please READ the DESCRIPTION and OTHER COMMENTS before asking because I have probably answered it already.

    You are pretty knowledgeable on the topic; I'm currently writing a sci-fi story on DA, but I'm constantly worried that my material might get copied and modified by someone.
    From what I read on the comments, your suggestion is to NOT use creative commons; in that case how am I supposed to protect my work from potential "borrowing"? Are the copyright laws enough?
    The fact that I'm still a "small fish" that has yet to get a regular base of followers, is what originates this phobia; because no one associates a work to you if you're not well known in the community. Any suggestions on the matter? Sorry for the wall of text.

    • @sambeawesome

      This is one of those cases where, if it's on the internet, people are going to take it. I'm not sure how common written infringement is, especially compared to visual graphics/artwork though. From my own bubble of the world, it seems to be a more common fear for writers than is necessary. I'm not a lawyer, and if you are really concerned, you may want to consider contacting one or Google searching further for more options on what to do. The only thing I can think of is to just avoid posting the whole story, especially if you plan to publish some day. If you want to post the whole thing online or have no interest in publishing, it might be better to find a website that's more built for literature protections, like Wattpad. Deviantart is a pretty crappy place for writers, sad to say. As an aside, if you ever DO find your work being used without your permission, don't be afraid to file a DMCA. That's what it's for :)

      Thank you for the suggestions. I was considering using another platform to post on, but I guess I was feeling a bit unsure and wanted to hear some reliable opinions from someone more experienced on the matter (^^')

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  6 лет назад

      It might help to discuss the topic with others in the community. While I do write, I don't publish it online, so I mostly deal with visual artists. Best of luck though!

    You. Are. An. Absolute. Lifesaver.
    I've been trying to figure this stuff out, even went to the cc.org website and read the legalese.
    My biggest hangups with NC is the commercial part...I might make something commercially available, for free (no profit), but I am expecting reputation and notoriety. Which is a feature of commercialism...
    So anyway. Thanks for explaining and do let me know if you have any thoughts about that!

    I´d like to know then, if should i activate the CC option on DeviantArt?, i had that doubt recently only on DA platform.
    Does CC matters on DA?, when is the right moment to apply CC for us?, i´ve seen many artists on DA with amazing original works without CC activated, why? it is related to their preferences?

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  8 лет назад +1

      You'd only want to put CC licenses on your works if your intentions are to give up some of your protection rights and provide resources for the community. (Basically giving people permission to use your work in their own work.) For people who don't put licenses on their creations, it's because they don't want people using any part of their work for their own creations. Like my own artworks, for example. I don't have CC licenses on them because I don't want people to use them. But for my stock photos, where I specifically /want/ to provide resources for people to use in their own works, then I do add the license. It's personal preference if you want to add licenses to your works.

    hey sam thank you for the info on cc licenses.However,I have one request ,hope you will pay attention to my request. Can you make a video (of about 5min) showing practically how to edit,modify and adding audio sound( creativecommons music) to the video,and the most importantly:how to check cc license associated with the video and audio and give ATTRIBUTIONS to it. Hope you will help me.

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  6 лет назад +1

      Happy to have helped :) For video editing, there are loads of helpful videos out there to show you how to do that. To be safe, I'd only use media that clearly states what the licenses are, so you don't have to try to find them and possibly get misinformation. Often times places will state how they want attribution, but if not, I have a links in the description that answer your question.

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  4 года назад

      No it does not. That is likely illegal depending on how it is done. What you might be interested in looking into is fair use, which is an entirely different topic from Creative Commons licenses.

    Sorry, my english is not that well, but i have a few questions. I am an GFX Artist, i edit stuff from other artists together. Am i able to use that license, to prevent, that my Edit gets stolen, if i mention credits from the original artist? Of course i do not charge money for my Edits, i do this for a hobby and for fun. Some people complain about GFX'er because they "steal art". So that's why i'm asking that question! Can i use the License without having any problem, if i correctly give credits? Because i don't want my DeviantArt Account get suspended!

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  6 лет назад

      Already using someone else's artworks is infringement unless those artists have licenses that permit such usages. This is regardless if you make a profit from them. Giving attribution, while nice, still doesn't negate the infringement. If you DO have permissions, then you may be able to put your works under a CC license, but it would already be protected by copyright, which you could file DMCAs for for anyone illegally using your graphics.

    Thank you very much for the video :) I know I'm very late now to ask a question but this is the first time I saw anyone talk about this actually. So, what are the kind of copyright or license should I use on my work if I'm making it for a client or so? Like a client asks me to do an illustration of a monkey or so in return for this amount of money. If we never discussed this copyright issue, am I allowed to post this work of mine online or not? And how can I put a license or so that makes the client use my work only in a certain way. Thanks!

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  5 лет назад +1

      If there was no discussion, the copyright is still yours, you could do what you want with it. Your questions dive more into contracts though, which is not really something I can discuss, since there's a lot that can go into it and often depends on a case-by-case basis. I would see if you could find a lawyer to ask your questions to.

    Thank you.. I am still confused about something.. Someone help me out please. Can I use a video or audio (part of it) having CC BY License and mark with Standard RUclips License.. I do understand a share alike license might would have to be marked by similar license and that is different to CC BY. I want to make my own videos but use some part of audio or video marked by CC BY license. Am I okay to mark that with Standard RUclips LIcense as long as I give proper credits

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome  7 лет назад

      Deviantart doesn't have that functionality, though I have no idea why. The easiest way to find stock on Deviantart is going under their 'Resources' category. Most all stock artists list their rules/terms of use on their pages.

      You can find something to utilize in your product that doesn't have share alike? Someone might've created something similar that has a different license. If this license doesn't work for you, just keep shopping around. I get the frustration in liking that one particular thing, but who knows, maybe you'll find something even better elsewhere? Good luck!
