I see the city grow and prosper over the years,,,err until recently..looks like its going the same way as snooky-ville now..oh well, glad I was there for the golden years, boozing in the places you mentioned in the vlog..appreciate your updates
Nice update Eddie looks like covid has taken its toll shame really still hope to see what it is like at night and what is open. Hope you get back to 100 percent with the cold cheers mate.
Thanks for the insight Eddy. Brilliant. I'll be in Pattaya at the end of January, then Koh Lanta, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and back to Thailand to Koh Chang. Really enjoying your latest videos which are helpful, entertaining and informative.
Hi Ed I'm PP right now, was in Oscar bar the other night, watch out the there and on 104 street are vultures, bit much for me.i don't know about you Ed but I'm finding the 136 the best for fun and also hardly any tourist? Hope to see you n maybe say hello 👍 cheers
I was in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap back in 2013...had an interesting time for sure but I did miss Thailand when I was there. Cheers for sharing Eddie! 👍🏻
Very good vid Eddie...I lived in PP for 10 yrs....you're right mate, it used to be more raw edged...it was naughty from 1995 till 2019.nearly a quarter of a century?? Not bad. Plz can you do one of SR in the day and at night...I've subscribed.
Thanks once again for taking us with you on your travels Ed, Those 3 wheel motorthings, I'd really like to get one of those, but think the excess baggage would be a killer..
Hi Edd this is a very insightful vlog, it’s a shame you didn’t have some old footage to mix in with current affairs. Are you ready for a nice tropical island yet? Cheers 🍻
Nothing ever stays the same ED , I had a great time in all the cities in Cambodia, like you I was there four years ago. As long as you don't change mate,
Edward, you need to go streets 5, 130, 136, etc. There are plenty of bars and restaurants. You can find 50cents draft beer. Everything has moved over there. Also, you can hang out at Bassac Lane. All these places are for foreigners.
Enjoy Eddie when I was last there in 2013 you could not walk about the River Front at night , very dodgy and deserted. Tuk Tuk every time late on back to the hotel. Maybe changed now stay safe.
Had sum great times there Ed I had sum laughs in soraya gardens can't believe that's gon. Il wait for ur walk around 104st I used to go out with Rose who owns a few bars including rose bar enjoy mate
Walkabout was great for the Aussie pies and dinners. Shanghai was good also. Howie moved and opened up 'The Wall'. One of the roads off 51 street. Heart of Darkness is great regardless of your gender etc. Never had any problem in there. ( Leeroy Thornhill band member of the prodigy fame played there DJ'ing a few years ago and was a great night. )Pontoon also is good and very high in security and safety of couples or people while in there. Living here is good. The city is getting it's mojo back. Even though many of the old places closed down with the pandemic. Some recovered but many couldn't. I find it better living out of the center of town if your here long time as I find it just a bit too fast paced on a day to day basis to live in. ( Saying that, I haven't been to a beach for years and always city locked.) Great for entertainment down in those areas once and a while. At my age I've seen most of it and lived my younger party days years ago. Always bars to wind down in if you don't want it too full on in your face.
Hi Eddie. Never found Phnom Penh very exciting, but the Riverside area is quite pleasant and plenty of cafes / restaurants etc. Would be good to see how the Riverside area looks now, post Covid 👍👍
Hi Eddie. Maybe, worth popping down to Kampot and Kep for a few days while in Phnom Penh ? The Giant Ibis bus is a comfortable ride and takes only a few hours journey 👍
Careful with budget hotel aircons mate, I got really sick once in Bangkok because of that, it was very dusty area, they did not clean the aircon, and the aircon just spread all the dust in the hotel room.
I have been visiting PP for 20 years and it is still a great city and a lot less dangerous than in the past. I last visited street 51back in September just before the Golden Sorya Mall closed and there are still some great bars on street 51opposite the Mall where you can watch life on the street. Bassac lane is no replacement for GSM !
The Walkabout was closed down when I visited P.P. just b4 covid lockdowns etc in Feb 2020. So cool a place it once was. P.P. has a character about it. Sad about those closed bars but we all have to adapt & find other bars & places to go.. 👍
Eddie...I agree about the "modern" city mania. .People want the old days, but complain about the sidewalks, hanging wires, run down areas, etc. I am not a fan of the "beautification" trend everywhere. So I think it will be P.P. for me when I return to Asia. Thanks.
I'm APALLED you did not say one little thing about how cleaned up it is, nor about the recent paving which seemed to be on all the streets you toured. Place used to be awash with litter and those markets? mostly wet floor with god knows what, water being only half of it I suspect...lovely smelling place...like a rose :) That whole entrance way to the Central market is new too, with that overhead sunscreening construction. I'd say much improved, but yeah, watch out as they pick up speed on modernizing, it'll get as sterile as Bkk is getting in places. Cast your eyes around and good luck seeing anything old from your memory.
Interesting to see how things have changed Eddy, looks like a sign of the times. Perhaps if you could manage a short night time video we could see how many of those bars are still open.
G'day mate, I'll be shocked at the changes when I finally get back, walk about hotel was def a shaddy fun place as was pontoon ,, golden sorya beer garden was an all night place of activity , yes got a revamp but rona put an end to it , now to be redeveloped, golden sorya mall has also been refurbished now known as you said , but times have changed any ways Catchya...
i was in love with 51 and 172 were my hang outs great food and cheap beer. the girls on 135 and bars. i love the riverside walk and exercise area. Yes its probably gone down do to progress.
Love all of the old bars and places. Sadly they are all disappearing now. Same as Thailand. Best places to go now to find retro bars in Thailand are Cha-am, Hua Hin and border crossing towns close to Malaysia. Up North here in Thailand like Nong Khai and Udon Thani would also suit you Ed. Probably cheaper than Cambodia.
Isaan can match or beat Cambodia on prices except for alcohol & tobacco as Cambodia has no duty Cambodia wins that by a mile. Still for Thailand Isaan is cheaper. Big 620 ml Bottle of Leo or Chang in a Girly Bar in Udon is 100 or 110 THB ($3). Other places it’s cheaper & a some do offers like 3 Big Bottles for 200 THB ($7). There is a bit to offer in this corner of Isaan. Khon Kaen & Udon Thani are 2 of the Isaan Big 4 Cities & joined by 115 Km of railway that takes 1.5 hours. Another 60 Km North you got Nong Khai again joined by the railway. From Udon you get a 2 hour bus ride to Loei & another 1 hour bus ride to the quaint Town of Chiang Khan which gets a lot of Thai tourists. From Nong Khai it’s only 25 Km across the bridge to Vientiane the capital of Lao & they got the bullet train that takes 2 hours to Luang Prabang & Lao is another Country of cheap Beer & Fags but as a Communist PDR it’s not a place for Mongering well at least not with Lao girls. Flights from Bangkok to Khon Kaen or Udon Thani are only 1 hour & you can buy a ticket for all the airlines that fly the routes from any 7-11, Family Mart, Lotus’s & Big C. Nong Khai is Funky. You got the nice River front. The new part of the town & the old part with the old French Lao style buildings & with Lao on the other side of the River you get the French baguettes & it has a few Girly Bars in Soi Nitapat near the White Inn Hotel. Plenty on YT about all these places if anybody wants to check them out.
@@isaanman5399 I like Isaan a lot. It has a lot to offer as you have explained in your post. I live in a small village in North Chonburi. Prices are the same as isaan. My pub is the local village shop where you can sit with the locals and have a few 60 baht leos and some craic. I was in Cha Am recently and was surprised at the 100 baht for a big leo in a girly bar. Very cheap. You did have to scout for stunners though. I was with the wife so it didn't worry me. I will look forward to my next isaan trip.
@ 25:17 Maybe ten years ago, none of those buildings were there apart from the one on the far right. It looked so much better. An Elephant might have walked down the street and blocked my view of the opposite river bank. All the more spectacular whilst eating a Happy Pizza and a few Beers.
Ed, great to see around Phnon Penh I’ve never been but I saw your vlogs from a few years ago and it has changed from then. So glad you are on the mend. Missing Pattaya and thailand so much - hoping to get back end of July, What’s your travel plans for next year, or is it too early to think about ☺️
All looking sad and tired. I have happy memories of Walkabout, Shanghai and Heart of Darkness which wasn''t a gay bar in my time. How did you get from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh?
Nice vid ed, lovely commentry. Yer sad about the soyra mall going. Had a few mad afternoons in there. And my favourite bar on 104 was top ten bar. I hope its survived.
Nice overview of the bar scene there Ed. Pity we didn't get to see you savour that cold beer. I was getting thirsty. Hope Phnom Penh doesn't become overdeveloped with skyscapers which you can see anywhere. Never checked out those riverside bars on my one trip to Cambodia. They may not be around muuch longer. Replaced by shopping malls and coffee shops. The end of an era maybe.
That was my spot when I went there, Walkabout in the afternoon, then Black Cat and Shang Hai in the evening, then off to Martini for the night and then back into town upstairs at Sharkie's. A few more at the Black Cat and then to Heart of Darkness to finish. A lot of Idiots in the Heart but it was the place to be.
Soyra Mall only closed a few weeks ago. That said, it was a shadow of its former self towards the end. I was in town in June and July and most of the bars had closed. Towards the end it was not safe at all. Everything is around the Riverside and 178 now. The city is not that place it used to be.

What about the infamous Street 136 Eddie - the Jewel in the Crown ?
