History of Japanese TCGs #13: The Dark Age of Yu-Gi-Oh!

- With a global release on the horizon, a massive national tournament in the works, and next-gen video games in development, the future was looking bright for Yu-Gi-Oh in 2001. Then Konami printed something stupid.
There is something really ominous about the title of this video after 3 episodes of hearing how the game degenerated to a solitaire format to the industrial rate that broken cards were printing all the way to a freaking riot taking place and NOW we enter the Dark Age?
it's funny that ygo seems to never be a "interactive" game yeah :-/ or it hat it's time were player interactions were possible and then it got removed for even more powerful cards.
And everyone complain that old YGO is better than the current one
Technically zombira was in the manga.
As a cosplay, before the duelist kingdom arc starts
Zombire's effect is also flavorful: He can't attack the player directly because he's a hero who protects
Most people are excited to hear you talk about Duel Masters
But i'm more inclined to finally learn what the actual hell Aquarian Age is and why the people behind Di Gi Charat invested in that as well as a licensed game for the ToHeart girls.
Very glad to see the last one wasn't the only one we were getting! YGO is my favorite game ever, but as much as I love it, it puzzles me how this disaster of a game has survived for so long and even permanently became one of the 3 biggest card games.
To this day, I just don't get how YGO has gotten so lucky. it's such a wild, untamed beast for so long... And is still a cultural touchstone. "You've activated my trap card" actually means something in nerd space. Despite all the downs it has experienced, people still love and play it. It's kind of baffling to me.
I hope that the digimon card game doesn't have such a fate but... I already look at some cards and am like "these need a reprint ASAP". Like Tai Kamiya from BT1, since he's a memory setter, which is important for resources, and has the simplest effect of giving you security+1 attack, bringing you closer to ending the game. And it's like €15-20 a card now. Or DeathXmon, he is creeping up to €70 per card! Not to mention with how dominant Bwarg X is in the Japanese tournaments. It's worrying.
Then again, my best bet is to... Just play casually with decks I have an interest. I can't make this a lifestyle game without locals near me.
What was I talking about?
11:52 Zombyra is from the manga, though! Well, kinda. It was a comic book character from the pre-duel monsters arc.
Absolutely love this series, can't wait for part 14 🙏
It really makes you wonder how the game survived all of this back then. Now everytime an outsider sees the stuff konami tries to pull with modern ygo and questions why the game hasn't died they're always told that the game is too big to fail now, but that wasn't the case back then.
I know. When people say “current YGO is so toxic!” I point them at the stuff back then.
Now a days we have WAYS to stop the stupid FTKs like ash. Which I think I’d a positive
I think the popularity of the manga and the anime series is a big factor. We only started played the TCG because the anime was so cool, the irony is that both medias had almost nothing to do with each other.
I heard elsewhere that the one contributing most on game life is the casual players, as long as Konami makes people thinks ygo is cool and want to play albeit not in highest level, is still a win. Also the lack of actual tcg IP as rival I think would contributed
@@comettcg8830 yeah casual fans are a HUGE fraction people forget about. When people say that YGO is to fast Yata Yata. I just say. “You can play casually”
I play casual and competitively. I enjoy both lol.
People think it’s purely competitive
@@megaspacewaffles well.. the way to stop ftks is building a board with 5 negates and still cards in hand xD
Oh man, I'm so glad you're back and uploading again. And ending just before the tale of Yata... beautiful! I'm only a casual YuGiOh fan, but most stories of Yata I've heard are from the Western side, so...!
Gotta admit, I felt an old war wound start to twinge when you mentioned Yata at the end. Those were the bad old days.
Just to be pedantic, Zombire does have a relationship to the manga.
In the original series one of the villain of the week chapters involved a classmate of yugi's who idolized Zombire (who was supposed to be an american superhero, think spawn). He dressed up as zombire and his dad paid some street toughs to pretend to be defeated by him (without the kid knowing)? Some convoluted thing like that which yami yugi has to step in and save the classmate from.
Actually, Dark hero Zombira was in the manga during the early section. He was a comic book hero who a classmate of the gang's was a huge fan of and he even dresses as him.
Dang, the last video talked about Konami stealing Christmas, but two history videos in a week, Christmas came EARLY!!
Is the sequel still in the works or no longer a priority anymore? Don't mean to parrot others but I loved the series and the detail you went into while describing events from the beginning of its inception to further on down the timeline. You created a solid playlist of captivating content which I could send to friends who wish to know more but do not have the level of researching capacity that you demonstrated (honestly I could never do something this thorough myself). Regardless, if you do continue or not, I thank and appreciate you, for your hard work, and the value you've provided to me, and others, that watch your channel. Much love!
He got stuck in a yata lock
These two parts seriously need to be shared. This is real good stuff. Hope you can keep up this amazing work.
just finished a rewatch of the whole series thus far and wanted to say thanks for all the excellent free documentary work you've done
First of all, hope you are alive and well. Secondly, PLEASE CONTINUE THIS SERIES!
It’s astounding how bad this game was right out of the gate, and it somehow just kept getting worse lol.
I love Yugioh!
man I can't believe it has been 2 years since you "returned" with this video. I could have sworn it was only earlier this year. but I get it, videos like this take a lot of work, so it is easy to get discouraged.
Wait wtf.
The new episode just came out it really is Christmas!?
I only upload the beginning after I'm certain of how it ends 😅 So if one episode is ready, most of the others in that block are also nearly finished...
What do you mean by block
Patiently waiting on another installment
Zombyra WAS a kind of Manga card. IN the Manga Zombyra was a Super Hero and one of yugis school friends was a total nerd fan about him.
But the history just shows that the game really just survived because of the good Manga and Anime to build hype on. I mean even in the west the biggest new player count was during DM and 5Ds time when then anime was actually shown on tv. Xexal was barely on TV in my country it feels so less people got into the game. and now.... i don't know if any young players still jump onto that game or if this game only survives of the "old playerbase"
Yasushi the Skull Knight is too funny. A Fusion of a Trap and a Monster.
I love these, as a player from the gx era its un to hear about this time in the game in the Japanese side
I'm having a blast with these yugioh videos and already watched all of them.
Very impressive work with a lot of in-depth information.
that ominous foreshadowing for Yata at the end
Wow so excited for this era of history! I didn’t realize you had more than one lined up-are you releasing these daily, or just whenever you feel like?
Only on weekends and holidays for these bigger videos. The current set are all being finished and rendered pretty close together.
@@lost-worlds Do you have any plans to continue this series (yugioh one) or is this the end?
Oh man, it’s great to see you uploading again. Loved this series, still love this series.
One little thing though, Zombire is somewhat related to the manga, being an American superhero comic that one of the characters was interested in, sometime before Duelist Kingdom. Regardless, great video!
Early tcgs really were a wild west. I think if most modern tcgs had even half the issues yugioh stumbled through, the game would be dead in a matter of weeks. Fantastic video as usual - name dropping Yata-garasu is a heck of a cliffhanger to end on.
We're already like 20 dark ages deep and it's been less than 3 years. I love this stupid game.
And with the words "Yata Garasu" he flew away, never to be seen again, unless...
Underrated channel
I lived through Yata Lock. That format was depressing for a kid who got shamed they wouldnt play with ante rules then ridiculed when they did
Oh man. This video was amazing.
Would be interesting to know if Konami had a direct say in which cards when to the first tcg sets .
I can't wait for the next episode.
Yo man, any chance you continue this series? It's amazing and I would love to learn more!
The next video is already in a high state of completion, but needs intense editing. I've had trouble making time for it with how things are going in my offline life. (My work recently laid off a couple hundred of us and I'm scrambling to replace that job.) This series is scripted up through the Digimon + Duel Masters arcs, so I really wanted to get past the YGO chapter and talk about those, but I need to give it its due diligence...sorry, I don't really know when it will be ready.
@@lost-worlds Any update on the next videos in the series? 🙏🏾Well wishes to you
Any new updates??
I can't wait for the next one homie
Glad to see that Yu-Gi-Oh, even back then, was an absolute dumpster fire of a trading card game.
Man those guys thad made the OG ocg ban lists where re ubicated to the tcg right? Their hits seem WAY to close to home!
Ah, Eternal Duelist Soul... my childhood precious. 🙏
I'd say pre-errata CED was the most degenerate card introduced to Yugioh, that thing was just absurdly powerful.
"The worst, most vile, most degenerate monster ever printed."
Me: Hold on, Firewall Dragon wouldn't be printed for over a decade at that point.
You would think Jogen's "no special summon" clause would interrupt the core loop of Return Exodia. The only way the deck would be able to get past him would be to summon a witch/sangan/etc. and try to ram Jogen but traps could help keep him alive.
That would be true, except you had a lot of removal options in that format that weren't banned, and even if it stuck it'd be in 200 attack, which loses to literally everything in Safe Return Exodia, including Exodia pieces, Witch/Sangan, and (most importantly) Cannon Soldier, which it doesn't even beat in defense mode. You could slow your opponent down with that, but only for a turn, and only during yours.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr wouldn't running removal options lower the consistency of the otk though?
Also keep in mind that you have triple solemn judgment and triple dust tornado as added layers of defense. Although to be fair people weren't running triple judgment in 2001 lol.
EDIT:. might as well also concede that none of my suggestions are at all helpful when going second against the deck. Not really much you can do when going second in general in the pre-veiler years
I love your content. Instant click. Perfect to wind down but keep the mind engaged
11:55 Zombire appeared in the manga though?
You are a god among men for making these.
I still get massive whiplash every time I hear Exodia being not only viable but the top deck in the OCG at any point because it just has never been relevant in the west. Always super cool seeing just how different a format can be due to differences in player mindsets throughout different regions and a slightly more prescient banlist.
The OP version of Last Will that we never got is probably the most important factor, it made for easy 1 Turn Exodia assemblies so long as you had a few Witch and Sangan in your deck, and with Last Will being unlimited at this time in the OCG it being the top deck makes sense imo, even when Last Will was limited you could still pitch it to the graveyard with Painful Choice and get it back with Faith.
Exodia had its time in the west early in the Zexal era with One Day of Peace, but it didn't hold a candle to the original FTK variants.
Absolutely love this series. I've always been curious of the evolution of yugioh format over time and you explain it really well ! You sound like you're familiar with all the aspects of the game and the anime and it makes it really informative to follow how those various aspects influenced each other.
Also lowkey hilarious to see how many of the problem of yugioh really were here since litteral day one.
Thank you for the effort you put in those videos !
I think Devil Franken is the real villain
Mythological Age incomingggggg
12:28 that came out on my birthday
I guess where I’m bored now is that all the archetypes do the same thing. So you’ve got 14,000 sets of functionally identical cards
Sometimes I just want to use kunai with chain
You aren't the only one disappointed that Superheavy Samurai came back only as a way to get Apollousa, Baronne.
Cmon part 14!!! 🎉
Back like Cooked Crack....hold em Up!
wow knocking these out of the park 😁
I need to see the OCG GOAT FORMAT
I hope yugioh gets a anime remaster/remake ❤️ I'd love to see all the stuff that was left out from the manga
Rush duels is basically original yugioh
Number 14 whenn?
Another one!
Return of the King
dmn I used to think goat format was old...no this is old
Yatta garasu meant Hurray crow in japanese
I don't know if the pun is intentional, but in the case it's not, it's romanized as "Yatagarasu" (only one t), meaning "eight span crow".
Thunderbolt?
OCG name for Raigeki
So Yugioh was a solitarie game from the start ...
Maniax Channel is dead! Long live Lost Worlds!
