    As a complete beginner I thought the music of Elton John was completely inaccessible to me. Thanks for proving me wrong and opening up a whole new world and way of learning.

    You are the man, man. I'm (70yr old) struggling with Love Letters : Ketty Lester. I 've found the chords from various online sites, and listen to endless replays section by section loops. I can busk it, but fail every time I play it, I just can't remember the song from end to end, even though I know where everything goes. Bennie And The Jets would be off the scale memory wise.
    Love your teaching method, and I won't give up trying, and trying and trying...nothing moves me more than playing piano tunes that I write.

    this is hands down one of the best breakdowns of this song. I wanted to use this song as a way to improve my improvisation and most videos are very surface level. Thank you for demonstrating the more subtle moves Elton makes.

    Finally someone who’s analyzing Eltons, Piano, playing style. Great video! I’m also a Billy Joel fan, can you make a video comparing Billy Joel with Elton John‘s style and techniques at the piano? Thanks for sharing, I subscribed.

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад

      Yes, great idea. I would say, the main difference between the two is what work they choose to release and how they release it. Billy Joel is very eclectic, he would change styles and themes in different albums, and in the early 90's he said, that's it, I've got nothing else to say. Elton in contrast, is very prolific, and more autobiographical, willing to take experiments that failed, willing to release lesser material in worse parts of his career, and sticking to a lot of production trends of his day. Both are epic artists. A seminar awaits on this topic, when I get the chance.

    Nice walk through of Benny and the Jets. It would be great if you could go through the piano solo that Elton plays in this song.

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +1

      In the solo, Elton is mainly improvising on the G major blues scale (with some minor blues as well) Bare in mind, he never plays it the same way twice but that's the formula he uses.

    • @jhn1987
      @jhn1987 Год назад +1

      @@contemporaryschoolofpiano Thanks, that’s a helpful place to start. Elton uses grace notes, thirds, and trills. I’m wondering what he does in his left hand during the solo - octaves, 5ths, chords? There’s just so much in this solo to learn from.

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +2

      @@jhn1987 it would mainly be chords in the middle register of the piano, it's very much a jazz-styled texture, left-hand chords in the middle register so as to not interfere with the bass player. In the 1973 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road recording, the end of the solo in the right hand is an E, G tremolo if my memory serves me correctly.

  • @MikeM91320

    If I don't have the major 7ths down yet, can I just play the G and F major chords?

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +1

      Yes you could but it will unfortunately lose alot of character in the song. In many pop songs though removing the 7ths will not make a huge difference, this song is a bit different. Are you having difficulty getting your fingers around 7ths chords? If so there are a few work arounds.

    This is not correct especially on the intro. Those chords are inverted where the higher notes ring out. Listen to the master recording.

      Hi King, the purpose of this video is not to replicate the exact notes Elton plays - even Elton doesn't do that in his gig. That is because in pop music there is a degree of flexibility and improvisation. If you treat pop music like you are playing Mozart - big problems occur. Watch Elton play Bennie and the Jets, get three or four versions and compare them, they will be very different. They will have common factors though, the chords and the lyrics.....and elements of the instrumentation. This is how pop music operates. This is a big focus with our teaching, because it's more authentic to the artist.

      @@contemporaryschoolofpiano ok I got ya. I try to play it like the recording but I love the other variations he has done. Improvisation on any instrument separates the men from the boys.

      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  4 месяца назад +1

      @@kingsecho3351 yes I completely agree, the original is fantastic and it's the original recording - I can understand anyone being attached to the voicing Elton uses on the studio version (which has a live audience edited/sampled in from a Hendrix concert!) Elton really shreds on this piece though in his concerts, my favorite live version is where he did it as solo piano and percussion in Soviet Russia in the late 70s, it's insanely brilliant and is some of the best rock piano improv almost ever recorded on tape (in my humble opinion)
