I watch at least 20 bushcraft, survival and outdoors channels and this one is clearly the best. Informative, educational and never boring. When I want to remind myself about some technique, knot or skill (or learn a new one) this is always the first place to visit.

In my urban life ( in the UK) I will never have to do bushcraft stuff- but I still watch all Coalcracker posts JUST IN CASE! I feel my life is incomplete not having paracord and toggles. Keep up the great work ! Thank you.

I had an idea a few months ago to make several sections of 550 line about 36 inches in length with loops on each end. The idea being to wrap them around a tree bringing both loops together and hooking a carabiner through them. Then tie the ridge line to the carabiners thus not abrading the ridge line on the trees. Adjustments can be made for different diameter trees. If extension is needed, toggle one end on the trees with the carabiners through the other end and attach the ridge line to the carabiners.

The best set up for a ridgeline, that I have seen and personally use to this date is the following:
5lb Nite Ize Carabiner attached to the bowline (standing end) of the ridgeline used in conjunction with a Nite Ize Rope Tightener Carabiner (the small one) inserted at the running end.
This set up is EXTREMELY fast to set up and tear down, AND eliminates the need to source toggles (sticks) and also greatly reduces, virtually eliminates, wear and tear on your paracord ridgeline (the cord won't cut itself from friction over time).

Food for thought. I've prepped a lot of 550 for deploying quickly to a sundry of tasks and I've come to despise the Boewline.
As the hank of cordage moves around in a bag, pouch, or pocket, the Bowline tends to shake apart, and when you need it, you have to tie it all over again. To overcome this, I tested the Figure 8, Dragon, Double Dragon and a host of others. Most would bind up under a load to where they were hard, if not impossible to untie without a tool, if at all.
I did find one exception. The Scott's Locking Bowline. As easy to break loose as a Bowline when you want to untie it but won't come untied when you are carrying the hank around.

Bowlines and Toggles are great for a ridgeline but the Siberian Hitch is better to secure to a tree!
Also, a truckers hitch is great as well but a modified sheep shank is better bc it is easier to tie and untie and and doesn’t put as much stress on your cordage. They all work but some just work better than others. Cheers!

I tie to first tree with a Siberian hitch.
Care must be taken (as with all knots and hitches) to properly dress and tighten Siberian hitch.
Also I always reinforce Siberian hitch with a chain sinnet-chain stitch-also known as monkey braid. At end of monkey braid, one or two loops are plenty, you can leave it unlocked or locked. Your choice. To lock just put end of cord through last loop and it’s locked.
This is a loop through the loop stitch that helps stabilize Siberian hitch.
It ties extremely fast, and can be tied anywhere along cord, either near the end, or anywhere in the middle of cord.
Another great benefit of Siberian hitch is when you are breaking camp-all you do is yank on the ripcord-and it is completely untied. But if locked, just unlock, then yank on ripcord (loose end) and you are done.

And to tie ridgeline to second tree.
I pull ridgeline tight along side second tree. I pull hard, once it’s tight, then and only then does cord touch the tree.
Tension-tightness of ridgeline is achieved before cord touches second tree. Cord is wrapped round tree (twice if possible) and secured first with a single half hitch. That is followed by a slipped half hitch.
The slipped half hitch has a stitch or two of monkey braid.
I usually choose to lock monkey braid on both ends of ridgeline.
Why do I completely tension ridgeline alongside of second tree, but before it touches second tree.
This is because with truckers hitch ridgeline setups, the cord is sawing against rough bark.
This puts unnecessary wear on ridgeline and tree. And many times it’s difficult to get a tight ridgeline because of friction of ridgeline against tree.
The monkey braid does not jam
The slipped half hitch does not jam
And the initial single half hitch does not jam.
Therefore this setup I’ve chosen is untied very quickly and without jamming.
No one is required to set up same as me.
That’s part of the fun. We are free to make our choices.
And if on morning breaking camp in the rain-and you have some cursed-knife knots. Feel free to cut the cord.
I don’t use para cord, or bank line.
      I use 2.2 Lashit or 2.2 Zingit.
Does not stretch (much) or hold water like para cord.
It holds all the knots and hitches, that I use.

  • @CIGARURI

What material do you use for a ridge line?

    • @thefucrew9865
      @thefucrew9865 5 дней назад +1

550 paracord, bank line, whatever cord you want or have.
I have used micro cord from Atwood Rope, and did jungle knots the entire length, and guy lines. Barely adds any weight to your tarp/etc.
Just be careful when tying knots with that cord, because it is hard to get them out (if you need to) if you have placed too much stress on them, or if you are in a hurry and have not used a "quick release" or slippery half hitches.
Just make sure it can withstand the weight you will be putting on it.
      Hope that helped.
