Hard to say without looking at it. But, I would check valve adjustment (make sure they aren't adjusted too tight and not seating closed) and cam timing.

Could you give me an estimated guess on a price to rebuild the top end of my GS550
I found it easier to strip the wheels and tires and forks off the frame then lay it on its side and pull the frame off the engine
I just got a 79 gs550 and it has almost no compression but everything looks good inside. What do you think?
