I bought two AT 897's in 2004 to use on our first independent feature film. Been using them for over 20 years now for all kinds of work. I love them. One even got sat on about 15 years ago so is slightly bent but they both deliver the sound I need for mostly corporate work. Highly recommend them.

The AT897 is in CLOSE second to me behind the Sennheiser MKH 416, but I'm on monitors and not headphones. I have an AT875R and a Synco D2 but I like my AT875R better, but maybe I'll check into the AT897.

Ive have the AT mic, with a little EQ you can make it sound perfect everytime.

Good video. The best microphone is the Sanken CS-3E. It is $1450, but it is worth every single dime. I read an article on Mark Ulano, the sound recordist for Quentin Tarantino and he said he used the Sanken for pretty much anything. It’s the ultimate Swiss Army knife microphone. The problem with shotgun microphones is that they’re good outdoors but indoors you get a lot of echo. But the Sanken CS3E because of the dual Capsule design is amazing inside and out. Trust me go with the Sanken CS-3e and you will never need another microphone ever again.

Not only was this a great mic test, but you all got to learn some new jokes too! :D

    I picked C AT897 - I liked the warmedest sound out of those 3

Tom, one of the reasons the 416 is at that price point is because it is more portectected from environmental conditions.

Mkh-416 the fullest and brightest sound. Hence the high price tag. I’ve been using one for years.

Side note: I use the Audio-Technica AT875R as companion mics to the AT897 and I swear by those too.

I have the AT897R I think it's a great sounding mike for the price. I prefer it with my FX30 and audio handle for Nat sound.

Mic A by far sound the best. Worth the $1000

I noticed the deeper warmth and bass to the voice with the 416 (A). The 600 is tuned to highs. AT was fine. I actually have it for video production where its better than the internal camcorder mic and that's all I need it to be.

Watching a few RUclips videos about SDC’s doesn’t make you an expert mate.
