Boxing Day test 1985? Dark times for Australian cricket back then. Border was about the only shining light, and Greg Matthews was often pretty ordinary like the rest of them, but you can't deny him a test match ton in the baggy green. I remember him being a bit of a hipster too.
If only he could have had a bit more success with the ball he would have been a great allrounder but frustratingly he kept getting picked for his bowling but gave his best performances with the bat. He blamed Allan Border for not letting him set the fields he wanted. In only his 3rd Test he was sent in to open at Kingston in the 2nd innings after Steve Smith copped a busted wrist that ended his career. Greg scored only 7 on that occasion but lasted more than an hour against Holding, Marshall and Garner. He was at his best against medium pace and spin but the express pace bowlers kept him quiet.
India should have won this test. It was a depleted Australian side, rebuilding under Simpson and Border. First we had taken 7-8 Aussie wickets cheaply and then allowed them to score 262. In reply India scored 450. Again in the second innings Border made 162 with the help of tail enders with a last wicket partnership of over 70. India had to chase down 120 and were 60 for 2 at tea on the last day. But unfortunately a thunder storm washed away hit Melbourne and match had to be abandoned.
As I recall, India in the second innings (Gavaskar and Armanath particularly) appeared to be playing for a draw scoring at 2 per over. Srikkanth seemed to be the only one playing with any urgency. What an extraordinary tactical blunder.
India batted a snail's pace for the entire series. I could swear I could see the moss starting to grow on Sunil Gavaskar while watching him bat during that series.
Yes I just looked it up. An AVG of 41 is actually pretty good. Was a good player. Good bat. I reckon if he had focussed on batting and parked the bowling he could have played more tests and averaged more than 41. Thinking of Aus between '83 and say '88, there were far worse players than him. But they thought of him as a bowler who batted a bit instead of a batsman that bowled a bit.
A childhood favourite of mine. Met him once in later life and wasn't disappointed, lovely bloke.
A really skillfull and talented cricketer...I played juniors with his brother Ian...both good players, but Greg was outstanding.
Loved watching Mo play. Quirky, passionate, talented, great for the game.
