The massively mounted film Shaakuntalam based on internationally acclaimed Kalidasa’s Sanskrit play ‘Abhijnana Shakuntalam’ is all set to release in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam & Kannada. The story of Shaakuntalam revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant from Mahabharata, portrayed by Samantha and Dev Mohan.
The film is helmed by supremely proficient, Director Gunasekhar and marks a whimsical tale of love set in the Kashyapa Kanumalu (Kashmir), the grandeur and splendour of Dushyant’s Puru Dynasty making the film extremely exceptional.

We had a small part of this magnum opus in our school syllabus in Sanskrit. Which made me curious to learn more about the great play 'Abhigyanam Shakuntalam' by the ever great Sant Kalidasa.
Never ever can imagine that one can depict the great epic of Kalidas in such a brilliant way.

I read abhigyanshakuntalam when I was in class 6 ,kalidasa was a gem.. but glad to see someone is putting it all in movies hope today all are gonna like this. But what I read dhushyant remembered his marriage with shakuntala once she showed her ring 💍 which is given by him..and that also a way to waive the curse which is given by durvasa roshi..

Watch kannada film Kavirathna kalidasa. In that movie Dr. Rajkumar and Jayaprada played the role of Dushyanta and Shakuntala respectively. Really beautiful movie with melodious songs, wonderful acting and costuming. Without artificial choreography that movie wins hearts.That movie released nearly 38 years back and till now it is maintaining it's popularity because of it's wonderful narration.
Even before this...some time in 1943 or 41....Tamil movie sakuntalai was made and released....!!!!....it starred MS Subbulakshmi as sakuntala and GNB as king dushyant....both being popular and evergreen carnatic musicians ....songs were brilliant and were written by papanasam sivan....the director was amaerican Ellis r Duncan....!!!!....the songs are still popular and are in YT...with lakhs of views.....!!!!.....black and white classic.....

I am Marathi from Belgavi don't understand full Kannada but I really like the way Dr.Rajkumar dialog delivery. its sounds larger than life and very entertaining. I have watched his lot of movie scenes only for his dialogues like Mayura, Kalidasa and other movies.
And the story of Mahabharata starts from here... The true Universal movies origin story... Wish may more movies to come in this series
