- A Discovery of Witches is a television film series to be released in fall 2018 based on the novel trilogy of the same name by Deborah Harkness. It is produced by Bad Wolf and Sky Productions. The show tells the story of Diana Bishop, an Oxford professor and reluctant witch who stumbles upon an enchanted manuscript and is thrust into a magical world unlike any she’s known. Together with a handsome, century-old vampire named Matthew Clairmont, Diana sets out to discover the manuscript’s secrets.
The show will star Teresa Palmer as Diana Bishop and Matthew Goode as vampire Matthew Clairmont.

I've been a fan of Teresa Palmer's for years and im so happy for her in landing this role which she absolutely embraces and portrays so accurately and beautiful on screen. This ones a true talent.

I saw ads for this and told my mom about it 'cause she's a big fan of the books (I've never read them), and now she's hooked and keeps trying to get me to watch it. I do love fantasy and Matthew Goode, so it would probably be a good fit. Might have to check it out.

All these twilight comparisons are so short-sighted. It makes me pity the those who won’t give this a chance because it involves vampires and a forbidden romance. Twilight was definitely not the first nor the last to use the two.
Lauren, spot on comment. I read the books and the similarity is forbidden love. The books are good with history and romance, which the TV show has incorporated.
The only difference being that Bella was an absolute and hopeless twat as a human and that absolutely killed it for me. As for the All souls trilogy I just devoured the books, finishing the second book in little over a week. Diana is one badass witch, but I must admit that the "woman falls for vampire" cliche could use some work. Why not a female vampire and a warlock?

He's a gorgeous man though and he's only 40 so he's not that older than Teresa Palmer who's 32 herself. And I guess they weren't supposed to be young (in their 20s), were they? He's a "professor" and she's about to become one. No one gets the position in such a young age, only genius people do. So yeah, when it comes to being a professor, they're ridiculously young.
I got obsessed with this after only one episode
So far, this adaptation is excellent: filming onsite at Oxford university, giving the viewer a good feel of the book. The chemistry of the actors is off the charts - truly enjoy seeing them together. I am a very happy viewer!

I loved this trilogy. In the other books it gets way better. I just loved it. Maybe because I'm a middle aged women lol. But the author does history. But you know the books are always way better. I hope the author writes more books

the books are so much better, at first, I got twilight vibes and was really unsure, but I stuck with it and it actually is pretty well written with more to the book then just romance
currently reading this before I watch the show! So far what I like about it is that they're professionals in a fantasy story and not some 17 year olds
So I went and binged watched both seasons and then I made my own discovery that season 3 may be miles away and may be the last season. Witchcraft! I would have savoured it if I had known that may be it 😓 any one who hasn't yet watched it please give it a chance. I don't normally binge Watch anything but couldn't get enough!
Just discovering this series, came upon it in season 2 so I know I’m missing a lot. So delighted that Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode are paired in here, been a fan of both actors for many years. Need to read the books which I always like to do before seeing screen adaptations.
Just started watching it and I have to say it's great. People used to say vampire diaries will be another twilight story but it turned out to be greater than twilight. So give this a chance.

This is not only a romance. It is also a murder mystery, focused on who killed Diana’s parents, who were powerful witches, and why. It also partakes of history, literature, cultural anthropology, education (vampire Matthew is a professor of biochemistry at Oxford, and witch Diana, who is a tenured history professor at Yale, obtained her D. Phil. at Oxford and at the time of the events in the series is a guest lecturer there). It is a sophisticated version of the vampire/witch/demon story. The vampires do not have fangs, and the witches do not fly on brooms or wear pointy black hats. There is a strong theme of anti-bigotry with a clear parallel drawn to civil rights history involving persons of color and gay persons (for example, after Diana’s parents are murdered, she is reared by her Caucasian aunt and her aunt’s female African-American partner). While all this sounds clumsy and heavy-handed, it isn’t. The acting of the cast is uniformly good to excellent. Matthew Goode is simply superb. You are riveted by him whenever he is in a scene. The books are great, and the series largely tracks them, with a few minor departures.
One of the best book trilogy i ever read.... it's a good thing they made it as a series. It can capture all the details we love.... SO EXICTED TO WATCH IT AGAIN

The first episode was amazing! This is spectacular. The way it is set, the scenery and the music, the tone of their voice and the acting is brilliant. Please let this show fully air without problem. I need to see all of this and every season. The only problem is waiting for each episode.

Strongly recommend both the books and the show. The book gives you more depth in the characters, more context and conversation and the show is so heartwarming,beautiful the acting is pretty good and cinematography is stunning i see a lot of people are comparing it to twilight or tvd, but it besides the fact that there are vampires like in many other things is nothing alike the love story is unique and different, can't wait for s2!

I've watched Season 1 & 2 and absolutely loved them! Those behind ADOWitches are brilliant! Fantasy, Sorcery and an excellent love story combined to grip the viewer and hold them on edge! Now a long wait until seeing Season 3 is 2022 which I think I'll just by the book to see what happens to Diana and Mathew next!

Here is my personal review after first episode of this series. I'm not a novel reader nor ever heard of this novel before.
PLOT 8/10
It's very interesting vampire/witch movie which very different from mainstream vampire nowadays.
Casting 8/10
I love the actor and actress. Looks good on their own and nice feeling watching them.
Scene/Shooting 10/10
Very nice scene of town. There are many nice location and what is the most interesting is the beautiful scene and nice camera angle.
Directing 10/10
I love how they direct the scene. it's look very unique and more like a good movie than a TV drama shows.
Conclusion
This is very promising series. I would recommend this anyone who love supernatural story. the location of shooting is very nice. It's not like you struct with teenager vampire and school day.

The book is almost nothing but romance. The female lead is the most special awesome witch that there ever was and everyone wants her and yet, there is no real reason for it, and she has no personality. It's Twilight with a witch, pretty much. Unless the TV show ignores a large chunk of the source material, which it might, but not from the looks of things.
It was done nicely for tv for the time. I would love to see them remake The Stand for Netflix/cable as well.

I've only watched the first episode and I like it so far. Even if they are less known to general public I enjoy UK shows (like Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) a lot as they often are more artistic in nature, with better story telling. Thankfully this is a more grounded and less ridiculous representation of the supernatural we see often in American productions.

Edward Bluemel is quite the talent. His dark hair and eyes are so compelling. He's a vampire yet so sweet and kind ... not to mention quite appealing. Where has he been? Hope to see more of him in upcoming projects.

I have been totally pulled in to this story. I LOVE supernatural, hauntings, powerful beings story's and this one is the BEST. The cast is so compelling and I've always enjoyed Theresa Palmer. I first took notice of her in "Bottle Shock" In Albuquerque NM my home town I ran in to Freddie Rodriguez. I was shy but still took time to express my enjoyment of "Bottle Shock" He never looked up at me, tilted his head in what seemed to be confusion and stated, "Thank you?" He was in town filming Night Shift which he only lasted a few episodes before joining "Bull" with the notorious womanizer Michael Weatherly. Any hoo ... Theresa Palmer is so beautiful naturally and her power is impressive, yet her draw is her kind generous nature. No surprise Matthew has fallen in love with her even with his killer nature that he controls out of love for Diana. The name is fitting, powerful, feminine, gentle yet strong. I LOVE this series. I have read all 3 books and an additional one that was not part of the trilogy! I look forward to the series. I hope the Diana and Matthew on screen matches the Diana and Matthew in my mind. I am most eager to find a way to view the series as I am in the U.S.A.
I mean c'mon. Stop comparing everything with twilight, I mean the main woman is an oxford historian professor and not a cheesy useless girl and Matthew Goode is clearly not shovel face. And yeah it is a romance but the plot, for those who actually read the book knows that it is not all about it like it was around twilight were you had absolutely nothing more that that cheesy creepy disturbing romance. If you don't want romance and a fantastical history just go and watch other genres which you have plenty. Jeez all this hate and the serie is not even out yet.
