  • The Amex Hilton Surpass is the mid level Hilton cobranded card. It sits right between the Hilton Honors card and the Aspire card. Amex recently overhauled all of these cards and in this video I focus on the changes made to the Surpass.

    At least where I currently live in Okinawa Japan, I can just go eat at the hotel buffet for lunch once a quarter without staying there and it refunds me the $50. Did it a couple weeks ago and it worked. Super easy to use

      Supposedly you have to stay at the hotel and charge it to your room to get the credit.

    I honestly think these changes make it a better card for me personally. That's not true for everyone, but as someone with Priority Pass on other cards and really only wanting to use hotel cards with the hotels those cards are partnered with makes these changes not too terrible at all. Great breakdown Mark! Happy to see your vids back again! 👊🏼

    For food, monthly or quarterly credit makes sense, because everyone eats 3X/day. But for travel, few people travel weekly like I do.

    So do the points earned go towards only Hilton honors or can be used for everyday items ?

  • @Th33Vultur3
    @Th33Vultur3 6 месяцев назад

    I saw the multipliers and would chose the regular Hilton Honors in regard to dining, gas and grocery purchases instead of this one. The only reason to upgrade is if I use Hilton a few times a year, which I don't for the higher Hilton multipliers at their hotels.

    Same with the Amex gold, I’m just not built for Amex cards at the time. We buy majority of our groceries at Walmart and Sam’s so we’d be missing out on a big amount of points. Maybe one day my spending will align with their cards but for now 🤷🏿‍♂️

    • @markplymale
      @markplymale  8 месяцев назад +3

      Feel that. Walmart neighborhood market codes as 4X with gold and I’ve got one of those right by my house so I tend to go there a lot. If you bulk shop at regular Walmart or a wholesale club then a high earning card is a must

    • @Th33Vultur3
      @Th33Vultur3 6 месяцев назад

      Since I left Walmart as far as working there, I've been shopping there sparatically there, I need to use either the Blue Business Plus or Blue Business Cash and especially if I need extended warranty. For regular supermarkets, I have the Gold and recently canceled the regular no fee EveryDay to make room for the regular no fee Hilton card in the future when Amex approves me and recognizes I'm under 5 cards from 4 and inquires fall off my report. I hardly used the EveryDay. I only have one charge card and that's the Amex Gold that was previously the Green card that I only miss the 3x on cruises on since I went on 2 cruises my first year with the Green card, but haven't gone on anymore in the last 11 months. Platinum is out of the question since my nearest international airport is small with no Centurion lounges or lounges in general since I checked on LoungeBuddy and the credits on Green are useless to me along with Clear credit is also uselss and the Platinum ones I would have to go out of my way to use enough to justify the $695 platinum fee and would barely break even. Gold I use GrubHub and Uber Eats once a month to drive it down to that $10 a year effective annual fee. At some point in another year or so unless Amex gives me a great retention offer, I woill cancel the Gold and stay no annual fee for awhile.

    I just picked up the Hilton Honors business card about a month ago. Hit the sign up bonus for it within the first week on a photo shoot/Production that I had - and crazy enough, the points were in my account with an a day or so. Still deciding if I’m gonna get the personal Hilton cards or not.
    Actually, just filmed my first “credit card“ themed RUclips video about it. Been watching yours and all the other dudes - so I guess it’s time for me to finally add my voice…fingers crossed

    I upgraded to Sapphire Reserve.
    So I downgraded Hilton Surpass to Hilton Honors.
    I accepted a Gold -> Platinum upgrade offer.
    And then I realized that Surpass now efficiently blends with Platinum. So 2 months later I upgraded back to Surpass.
    Am just completing WF Choice Privileges Select 90,000 pts bonus spend.
    I also have Autograph.
    And SavorOne.
    Good to go SE Asia or Europe!

    At some point Amex needs to stop increasing SUB spend requirement. I live in the Northeast, there's not a single utility accepting Amex, and most restaurants, especially dinners are refusing to accept it.

  • @kevinManhattan
    @kevinManhattan 8 месяцев назад

    I don't think this card is long-term. Quarterly credit is just not good. Especially if I already have Aspire card. But I heard from some people that if you go in and dine at one of Hilton hotel restaurants, credits trigger. I guess it depends on how restaurant/hotel codes that charge. But still.
    And people shouldn't really drop $15k on this card just to get another free night.
    I probably get one and in year 2, I would ask for an upgrade offer and get another Aspire! Love the video Mark!

    Let's face it. We all want to maximize. The credits haven't got enough real world use. Yet. But in my mind one possible "hack" is to prepay non refundable booking price (which is always lower) in March for July. Do it again in April for July next day. Then reserve for July pay at hotel for one night. Each billing should trigger credit. So $150 off a 3 night stay. Haha idk I only have the annual fee free version because (like a lot of us) have the Platinum card for Gold status.

    I really don’t get this take. Why have a Hilton card if you’re not even going to stay at their properties at least once a year? If you actually stay at Hiltons, this card is way more valuable now. Food and beverage credits from Gold status alone can pay for the card. The only ones losing are those who only had this for Priority Pass, but it can easily be replaced by the Altitude Connect or Reserve

    • @markplymale

      Credits harder to use with a higher fee was the point

      @@markplymale I mean you just have to stay at a Hilton once and you’re back to the same fee as you had previously. I get where you’re coming from, but the only reason why I’d see these changes as negative is if you only had this card for PP. That’s the only big loss. Everything else stayed the same or got better. Gold status is still worth the price of admission even with the annual fee increase. You can make back the annual fee in as little as 5 nights with the F&B credits. Hilton credits, multipliers, and FNC after spend are just the icing on the cake

    • @KennyCharlesMoney
      @KennyCharlesMoney 6 месяцев назад

      @@royce1510you have to stay at the hotel to get the credits. So you can’t just stop and eat at a Hilton. So I’m theory you need to already plan on staying at a Hilton once every 3 months otherwise it’s just work to get your money back.

    • @royce1510
      @royce1510 6 месяцев назад

      @@KennyCharlesMoneyI understand why people who only had this for the PP visits think this is a downgrade, but that was the only major loss. If you actually stay at Hiltons, this card pays for itself easily, which is kinda my point. Gold status alone is worth the annual fee. The Hilton credit is just the cherry on top
