Sitting down before a long road is rather a kind of mini meditation - sometimes it helps to realize that you've forgotten something important like the tickets etc. Retracing the steps helps to remember what you were doing before you lost something - really helps locating the thing. :)
As for "посидеть на дорожку" - that is basically done for having a luck in a journey, I believe. And about whistling - in my case this superstition was spread on all house, not only for doors, so we as kids couldn't whistle in house cause "we won't have money":D About not taking money directly - never heard/came across, though used to live both in the village, town and big city.
The odd thing to me was not that kids didn't whistle but didn't even know how to whistle because of this superstition. I even met some adults who couldn't whistle. That was strange to me : )
That's a bit strange to hear about superstition of 13 number in the US since you have coat of arms full of it: 13 stars, 13 stripes, 13 arrows, 13 leaves, 13 letters :)
The ring goes on the Right hand - because Dexter .... but the Left hand is Sinister (of the devil) so if you wear it on the left hand - your love will be cursed. Russians applaud when the plane lands - first time, very odd. Flowers - never give an even number, never give yellow and never give them by proxy. Never eat the last of the bread at a meal (maybe that is just the Stans) Never refuse to eat what is on your plate (and in the Stans - it is often horse) Never say hello to your friends wife on the street. And culturally - if you are in Ukraine (before the war) if a girl is Brunette & in flat shoes - she is married but Bottle Blonde & heels - she is on the prowl.
Not all, but most still have one or two superstitions they follow, sometimes even subconsciously : ) Even in the US, how many people do the "knock on wood" bit? Most of them would say they're not superstitious either.
I personally think it makes your life more interesting and unique :) We actually had a history class at a University I went to on superstitions and where they came from :) Growing up my mother even had a book with all of them listed 🙈😂 Here are some: No shaking hands through a door threshold; Holding a button if you have to cross a black cat’s path; If your left hand is itching you’ll be giving your money to someone, if it’s the right hand- someone will give You money; If they bird poops on you or the car you’ll be getting money (this makes my husband happy 😂); If you have hiccups someone is thinking about you; If your ears are burning someone is saying bad things about you; The cat has to go first into a new house/apartment; To bring your Domovyonok from one apartment to another (if moving) you need to set aside a sleeper at night and tell him to get in. Then you have to bring a sleeper to the new place and let him out 😂 If you drop something depending on the gender of the item you will have guests of that gender soon (ложка - женщина, ножик - мужчина) And etc etc :) It makes it kind of crazy and fun :) Also I found out that it’s not only Russians who are superstitious but Brazilians too. You won’t believe how many superstitions we have in common! 😂
ruclips.net/video/iYpjTU4y9eY/видео.html - we did one already! We are going to do more videos in Russian as well! If you have ideas for something you want to hear, tell us! We are a small channel so we can talk about it!

I adore this cartoon "Domovenok Kuzya"
Just watched it with my kids. We all enjoyed it. It might be a good show for learners of Russian too.
