Snowy Owls: Endless feeding of growing chicks!

  • Snowy owls are an iconic species of the Arctic. Animal world of the Arctic. Birds of prey. Snowy owl on the nest, parenting behavior, animal sounds. Snowy owl nest. This Snowy owl female nested in a good year for the Arctic with a high number of lemmings in the tundra. A couple of months ago, she laid 5 small eggs. Time goes fast. Only coordinated action by parents can bring success in raising numerous offspring. She is surrounded by five big owlets now. One more month and they will fly. But now the growing chicks need a lot of food from dad and motherly care. The big owlets still want to shelter from the cold northern wind under their mom. The male needs to hunt lemmings all the time to have enough for everyone. All chicks can already swallow their prey whole well and quickly. The mother distributes the food among the chicks carefully. Important: we see that the owlets do not take food from each other and do not show aggression. They beg for food from their parents. In 220 minutes of video observations of this family, 8 lemmings were swallowed by the chicks!

That's amazing that Mama Owl knows which Owlet has been fed and not. I love that the Owlets are not aggressive during feeding! It's too bad that this family dynamic isn't displayed in Bald Eagle's nests! Thank You for sharing this amazing video of a BeAuTiFuL Raptor Capture Artic Owl family!

Very hard work for the parents, indeed. I think it's amazing that the chicks don't try to steal food from each other. Let's hope the father will manage to find food enough for them all to survive and get a good life! 🌾😊🦉

Does she ever take a break from egg laying? How old do they get when they actually fly away to be on their own? I’ve never seen them leaving the nest. Is there a time when the nest is empty? Lol They are such a cute family to watch. They sure love the camera lol I love the way mom stands up to check on them. Thank you for sharing this.

The larger ones almost always eat the smaller "runts". Pretty common with all raptors, birds of prey.

Cannibalized for the family I'm sure. That is way too many fat , greedy chicks as it is that's brutal work on a single parent or even for two that also have to feed themselves so that the chicks have someone able to keep the food coming. That is why eating their own young/ siblings happens in many bird species.

That one fat baby keeps eating all the food the parents bring it’s 10 times the size of the others , the smaller ones need to eat to , that bigger one looks like it’s in a food coma jeez ! That bigger one doesn’t need to scream for food because he’s eating it all !
