The best definition of sustainability that I have come across is to "cater for the needs of the current generation, without compromising the needs of future generations". (UN, 1989).
Yes, exactly Earth will most likely survive, nobody is saying it cannot sustain itself, but what about humans? Will our population crash as a consequence of lack of resources and global unrest, will we have more climate fluctuations disrupting our comfortable way of life and will it bring other negative consequences that haven't yet fully materialized. Sustainability is about humans also existing on and with Earth for everyone's benefit
I love this video. One thing I would recommend would be a plan to reduce the population explosion. I think there should be some kind of law that limits the conception of unwanted children. Also unnatural means to extend life into the vegetative state should not be condoned. I see nothing wrong with terminating an unwanted existence,
THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF SUSTAINABILITY The environmental movement is supported by national and international political powers, but the movement is more than just political. In the past century, New Age worship of the planet has become popular, providing another reason to accept the sustainability paradigm. Here are several of the ways Earth worship is being propagated: The Gaia Hypothesis In the 1960s, scientist Dr. James Lovelock formulated the Gaia Hypothesis, a theory suggesting that Earth and its physical components are a living system that work together in harmony. Lovelock says this: "You may find it hard to swallow the notion that anything as large and apparently inanimate as the Earth is alive. Surely, you may say, the Earth is almost wholly rock, and nearly all incandescent with heat. The difficulty can be lessened if you let the image of a giant redwood tree enter your mind. The tree undoubtedly is alive, yet 99% of it is dead." . "The Gaia hypothesis...suppose(s) that the atmosphere, the oceans, the climate, and the crust of the Earth are regulated at a state comfortable for life because of the behavior of living organisms. Specifically, the Gaia hypothesis said that the temperature, oxidation state, acidity and certain aspects of the rocks and waters are at any time kept constant, and that this homeostasis is maintained by active feedback processes operated automatically and unconsciously by the biota. Solar energy sustains comfortable conditions for life. The conditions are only constant in the short term and evolve in synchrony with the changing needs of the biota as it evolves. Life and its environment are so closely coupled that evolution concerns Gaia, not the organisms or the environment taken separately." . Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis completely contradicts the truth about the planet as written in Genesis 1. Gaia supports the theory of evolution, as well as suggesting that the earth is dominant over humanity, instead of the Biblical paradigm of God giving humankind the right and responsibility of dominating the planet. . Gaia has sparked many Earth-worshiping groups and events, such as Gaianism and sacred evolution, the Gaian Mind Summer Festival, Gaian Voices, and Gaian Tarot. . As journalist Joan Veon tells us, the Gaia hypothesis has even come to popularity in world politics: "In 1992, what the United Nations did was, they perverted, inverted, that truth, and they basically said man was no longer dominant over the earth, but the earth was dominant over man. They said that we, as men, as living human beings, were equal to the plants and the animals. And so, what Gaia really is, is paganism. So, we now have the United Nations espousing a pagan religion and they are trying to make it equal for each one of us and therefore stamp out the validity and personhood of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the savior of the world." . "UNCED, also called the earth Summit, was an unveiling of the philosophical shift from the Judeo-Christian world view to Gaia...With the adoption of sustainable development at UNCED, man was demoted to the same level as a plant or animal." . The United Nations is working towards not only a global government, but also a global religion: the New Age, which is espoused perfectly in the Earth-worship involved in the sustainability movement. . Humanism The increasingly popular doctrine of humanism agrees with Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis: "First: Religious humanists regard the universe as self-existing and not created. . Second: Humanism believes that man is a part of nature and that he has emerged as the result of a continuous process... . Man is at last becoming aware that he alone is responsible for the realization of the world of his dreams, that he has within himself the power for its achievement." . Corliss Lamont, in his book The Philosophy of Humanism, says this: "For his great achievements man, utilizing the resources and the laws of Nature, yet without Divine aid, can take full credit. Similarly, for his shortcomings he must take full responsibility. Humanism assigns to man nothing less than the task of being his own saviour and redeemer." . UNCED and The Earth Charter In 1992, the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to historian David Livingstone, the Conference included many elements of New Age Earth worship: "The summit was described by Time magazine as a “New Age carnival.” . On the eve of the UNCED, a midnight-to-dawn homage to the “Female Planet” was held on Leme Beach. After dancing all night, the worshipers followed a Brazilian high priestess to the water’s edge, where they offered flowers and fruits to the Voodoo mother goddess. . Baha'i believer Maurice Strong, UNCED's Secretary-General, was instrumental in the creation of The Earth Charter, which came to fruition in 2000. He made it clear that there is a spiritual agenda in the environmental movement: "Maurice Strong hinted at the overtly pagan agenda proposed for a future Earth Charter, when in his opening address to the Rio Conference delegates he said, “It is the responsibility of each human being today to choose between the force of darkness and the force of light.” And, he said, “We must therefore transform our attitudes and adopt a renewed respect for the superior laws of divine nature.” According to Strong, “The real goal of the Earth Charter is that it will in fact become like the Ten Commandments.” . Joan Veon tells us that New Age leaders Alice Bailey and Helena Blavatsky often used the terms "force of darkness" and "force of light." . "Their writings state that the "force of darkness" are those who adhere to the "out-dated" Judeo-Christian faith; those who continue along their "separative" paths of the one true God." . The "force of light" (Lucifer), in their view, is the inclusive new age doctrine of a pagan pantheistic New World Religion. In the New Age of Aquarius there will be no room for the "force of darkness" and "separativeness." . It's clear that sustainability and environmentalism are not only about caring for the earth, but about political control and New Age spirituality. . David Livingstone sums it up this way: "The environmental movement, while helping to advance the cause of the oil industry, is an extension of the Aquarian conspiracy, incepted by Alice Bailey, designed ultimately to foster the acceptance a one-world-religion, based on the occult, or the New Age, as it is called."
@mixmastermeeks I am not religious. You would only accuse me of that if you were, as I suspected, a fundamentalist, homophobic, sexist Christian. The Greens are a political party. I vote for them because of the incompetence of the main two parties and the social equality beliefs I have, not because I am some 'hardcore' environmentalist.
I cant believe this only has a million views being from 2010 humans wont be in Earth for much longger if we keep fucking ourselves up. By the way am 13 if you thought I was a boomer
Please, don't judge me when you have no idea what i'm all about. What i'm saying is that it's pretty lazy of you people to think you can just put everything into the hands and someone else with money like James Cameron and keep living a wasteful life. It doesn't matter how much stuff we could possibly get from asteroid mining, you still have to stop living like you have an infinite supply of everything.
@SonjaSmith Industrial age. Education is higher, so we recycle and have filters and smog collectors. Computers are saving trees, we are solarizing and using wind power. We are organic farming again, but on 'mass scale' because we have machines that allow it in a less time consuming nature. People who want us to go BACK in Time are wrong. We are evolving above and beyond the use of fossil fuels- by new technologies that only wealth/education/prosperity can provide. Prosperity is great , Evolve!
@paulflute I think you are on the right track. IE: If you go to poor countries the environmental devastation is much worse. The land rivers and lakes are polluted with garbage, dirty drinking water causes much illness and death. Poor countries have much lower pollution standards so industry takes advantage, the birth rate is higher which puts a strain on the few resources available. People in first world countries can afford to be more conscientious, environment is cleaner than in the .........
@SonjaSmith Your english is hard to understand... Im not sure if u understand the word "selfish". If u save whales from dying then u're noo where near "selfish".. u call it "helpful" and "caring". Lol! ur talk about cheese makes no sense xD u dont know me so pls dont judge me. Those who let the goverment do it all r selfish, to afraid to stand for whats right n whats wrong.. selfish people are those who hoping they'll die before something bad happens to this planet but i want to make a change!
@norwedgianawesomenes I am sorry, but you are Wrong and know nothing about economics. WHY would ANYone want to decrease the consumption which = production, jobs, prosperity of wealthy countries, for any reason? Wealth produces wealth , across the board. Poor people produce nothing. You are advocating robbery of producers to 'fix' non producers and hoping that helps, but it doesnt. I am all for 'Charity' but not THEFT and regulating incentive until there is none.
I disagree that demand for the earths services increases as living standards rise. that only hold true if your models equates high living standards with over consumption... most of the problems of the over developed nations are that of gree d and wate and learning the true value of things would increase health and wealth and decrease negative environmental inpact.. our society is chronically ill from using too much.. using less will make us better not worse off..
@DANCINGBONES dinosaurs needed that vegetation to survive. the vegetation of our time is practically going extinct due to anti-environmental machines, unclean air and unclean water. mind you that plants still need clean air and water to survive, like us. if they die, we die. dinosaurs didnt genetically enhance their vegetables and fruits before eating them either. but you are right about the earth. its an amazing surviver. but that doesnt mean we'll survive with it.
@FromhereIsee yeah, personal attacks are a sign of great intellect. You must have very low self esteem to have to attack me like that. Anyway my conclusions; you cannot make the most sustainable, efficient product at the lowest possible price, as it is uneconomical to do so. People are going to be buying the cheap products to save money, which of course aren't any good - break down, get thrown away, use resources and "boost" the economy. Producers aren't complaining because they get $.
@nicorbit unfortunately the world is able to produce a determined quantity of food.... and we are too many people because we need too much space where live e produce food. in ecology there is a basic parameter that indicate this, it is the carrying capacity. I think that ills, wars and other chatastrophic events depends on the huge quantity of people that there are in the world.
"Money/market" is ROOT of problems, how do we: 1. stop corruption caused by profit motive? 2. ensure everyone has minimum necessities? ANSWER 1. FREELY Share ALL resources & knowledge worldwide, NO more money/property 2. Use LATEST technology to create an ABUNDANCE of all our needs, NO more waste/theft 3. Automate/localize ALL production and distribution, NO more central control/wage slavery v=4Z9WVZddH9w
@Adonnus100 And certainly I shouldn't have to mention how non unique it is to find a youtube scholar who's ideas can't be questioned because they have a degree. I find that people with solid ideas and arguments don't have to appeal to the authority of having a degree. In short, not only are you wrong you are run of the mill.
@kempingpeg - "We need to stop worrying about the f**king polar bears or climate change or 'the environment" That has to be sarcasm. Cuz it's definitely not rational thought. On a different note, It always amazes me how people today are so unable to think even a few generations beyond themselves.
First of all the civilization has to drink all the oil and then find a way to survive without it by developing the already known sustainable ways to get clean energy (solar cells, wind turbines, sea waves turbines, etc). In the meanwhile theres a lot to do to drop down our carbon foot print.
@mg3media marketing here . . . Good basic intro. I'm interviewing folks who want to share their creative actions toward a sustainable life, now that they've got the basics down. Send a quick note through our contact form if you have a cool idea or story to tell. ~
i totally agree whit these statements but in order to change our world , we have to change our selves the money system is based on cyclical consumption and destruction, things that are cheap and do not last long , so we have to change it in order to have a good life we are all one, one love from Romania

THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF SUSTAINABILITY
The environmental movement is supported by national and international political powers, but the movement is more than just political. In the past century, New Age worship of the planet has become popular, providing another reason to accept the sustainability paradigm. Here are several of the ways Earth worship is being propagated:
The Gaia Hypothesis
In the 1960s, scientist Dr. James Lovelock formulated the Gaia Hypothesis, a theory suggesting that Earth and its physical components are a living system that work together in harmony. Lovelock says this:
"You may find it hard to swallow the notion that anything as large and apparently inanimate as the Earth is alive. .
The United Nations is working towards not only a global government, but also a global religion: the New Age, which is espoused perfectly in the Earth-worship involved in the sustainability movement.

Humanism
The increasingly popular doctrine of humanism agrees with Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis:
"First: Religious humanists regard the universe as self-existing and not created.

Second: Humanism believes that man is a part of nature and that he has emerged as the result of a continuous process...

@ichifish yeah, instead of paying some human to exploit Mother Earth, we need to pay Mother Earth by protecting her, and living in harmony with her.
Sustainability is simply impossible under the current socioeconomic system.
of course
cool.
Nicely delivered. As an educator, it is quite helpful to have inputs like this available on-line for students to view, whether facilitated or not.
I was brought here by my geography teacher cuz idk for what reason
the reason for poverty is because people need to feel better than others so boom, big gap in wealth between of poor and rich
viva l'italia
2 min clip that briefly tells about the concept of living sustainably. keep it up.
This is the best definition of sustainability ;)
This just makes me sad.
"Money/market" is ROOT of problems, how do we:
1. stop corruption caused by profit motive?
2. ensure everyone has minimum necessities?
ANSWER
1. FREELY Share ALL resources & knowledge worldwide, NO more money/property
2. Use LATEST technology to create an ABUNDANCE of all our needs, NO more waste/theft
3. Automate/localize ALL production and distribution, NO more central control/wage slavery

@kempingpeg -
"We need to stop worrying about the f**king polar bears or climate change or 'the environment"
That has to be sarcasm.
i totally agree whit these statements
but in order to change our world , we have to change our selves
the money system is based on cyclical consumption and destruction, things that are cheap and do not last long , so we have to change it in order to have a good life
we are all one, one love from Romania
