I visit the OLDEST Garifuna settlement in Honduras: Punta Gorda, Roatan

Explore Punta Gorda, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America. The community, located on the shore of the beach, was founded in 1797 when some 2,000 Garifunas arrived in cayucos from the island of San Vicente after being expelled from the island by the English. The Garifunas arrived on Roatan, established Punta Gorda as their first settlement and began to rebuild their lives. Today Punta Gorda is a tourist destination for those who want to get to know the authentic Garifuna culture. Walking its streets, I managed to learn about the history of the settlement, taste the famous gastronomy, learn Garifuna words, dance the punta and Yancunú and make many friends. Despite the richness of the culture, Punta Gorda is a community of scarce resources and little infrastructure.
