Man, that was quite the philosophical rant. Lots of deep thoughts right off the bat, as all things should be. Good to hear that you got out of that slump, I was wondering what was going to do the trick. I already have a few of Ursula's books on my TBR and I'll be adding this one as well. Good luck with the closet remodeling!
Two good Book to end the year on I feel , pulpy LeGuin .....nice image, I read City of Illusions earlier this year along with Rocannons World and Planet of Exile (I'm working my way through the Hanish Novels she wrote). Love Bob Shaw too read Other Days, Other Eyes and Nightwalk earlier this year not sure where my year will end I'm alternating between the Skaith trilogy by Leigh Brackett (I just have the last one to read) and three short novels by Samuel R Delaney namely The Jewels of Aptor, The Ballad of Beta-2 and They Fly at Ciron (my current book) I also read VALIS by Philip K Dick earlier this month so the new year might begin with the other two books in the trilogy. Best wishes for Christmas and The New Year and Many thanks for the passionate quality content.
Happy New Year to you as well! I've heard a lot about Night Walk so that will probably be the next one I try. LeGuin is always good. I should try and get my hands on all of the Hainish Novels
"City of Illusions" is a part of the loosely connected Hainish Cycle (as are "The Disposessed" and "The Left Hand of Darkness"), but it is also a third part of more connected trilogy within tye cycle. The previous books are "Rocannon's World" and "Planet of Exile" and together they describe the times before creation of the Ekumen from TLoD.
(Spoiler alert about Media Death Cult) Moid at Media Death Cult has just nominated Lathe of Heaven as his best read of the year, coincidentally. Great minds and all that.
Hey. So, if you want to go into something totally different but completely relatable try The Blacker The Berry (1929) by Wallace Thurman. It provides an examination that, to me, shows the fundamental joinings, or unions, or commonalities between all people and uses the outcast as the vehicle to do so. Because who will take the deepest, longest, look at what it means to be a part of a people than the one who even the most downtrodden won't accept? The lesson I took was that it's not what makes us saints that joins us the most, but what makes us sinners. And that makes the triumph of our better nature all the more meaningful. Of course, ymmv. I hope that made sense.
That makes perfect sense and I think it's a theme I actively seek out in a book. I spend probably too much time wondering about what connects us and not enough time connecting 😅
Great year. Great channel. Another great YT'r. Books? Not disgusting. Thank you SIR!
Merry Festivus, Happy Christmas.
Bob Shaw was a very funny guy. I saw him give a comic talk at an SF conference in Coventry in the UK in 1976.
There were a few chuckles to be had in Shadow of Heaven
i def understand being in a slump!!
Hope you get out of it soon :)
Good stuff, man. Perspicacious and perspicuous.
Currently reading "The Left Hand of Darkness." Probably finish it over Christmas break. So far so good.
Journey across the ice at the end is 👌

Thanks LeGuin will give you the philosophical ideas in a much more eloquent way 😅

Thanks for this. The Hainish novels all seem loosely related enough to be read independently

Love that one. Great choice
