- Check out this exciting tour video of our adventure down the Shotover River in a high speed, cliff defying jet boat. Their shallow New Zealand rivers outside of Queenstown is where jet boats were invented back in 1954. The Shotover Jet is the latest technology providing extreme control. Although death defying, there have only been a handful of deaths with over 3-million riders over the years.

My wife and I did the Shotover and loved every minute of it, proper white knuckle thrill ride. Next day we did the Nevis swing, gotta love Queenstown.

The captain was great and precise.
I went to New Zealand in the summer of 1974 and snow skied from Queenstown (South Island) to Mt. Tongariro (North Island) and took the Shotover jet boat ride twice. Smaller boats and a more intimate experience, then but what a ride. Bought my 21 foot jet boat trying to recreate the experience.
You travelled by Ski's from Queenstown to Mt Tongariro in Summer?

Had a spectacular jet boat ride in the 80s at Queenstown with guy who was one of the stunt drivers in the film Race to the Yankee Zephyr. He was killed while making the film shortly after.

The ride seemed very stable and I never had the feeling that it would roll or tip over.

Intresting…the passengers and the pilot don’t use helmets for protection (is just one observation, not a critic)…so, don’t have a minimum of risk to chock with the rocks?

I feel bad for tourists - they do not understand that it is not a game. If that speed boat hits a rock - not all of them will survive...
I discovered this video and had to look it up. I lived in New Zealand for over a year. Surprised they actually allow this they are a “progressive” country.

Searching for accidents, there are very few and the only deaths I could find were from jet boat racing (not tourist operators). The most significant injury seems to be a broken leg?
Why? Shotover jet has been going since 1965. No company stays in the tourist business that long unless they know what theyre doing...

Engine failure is worry as I understand it has an impact on steering
