  • Aqueous silver Ions are being reduced to silver metal onto a large glass Florence flask. This has been called the Tollen's Test which is a laboratory test for reducing sugars. Reducing sugars are sugars that have an aldehyde ending on the sugar that can be further oxidized into a carboxylic acid. This sugars represent reducing agent as they force the reduction of the Ag+ into Ag and thus produce a silver mirror.
The reducing sugar used was Dextrose and the silver ions came from a silver nitrate aqueous solution.
