Cumbres & Toltec - The Last Freights - 50th Anniversary Charter

- To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the last Rio Grande revenue freight over Cumbres Pass, Trains Magazine sponsored a 2-day charter on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The first day featured K-36 #483 (#488 in disguise) and #484 on a freight from Chama to Cumbres. After reaching the summit, #484 continued light to Antonito, with #483 handling the freight train on the long downgrade east of the pass. The second day featured a rare westbound doubleheader with #483 and #484 (just like in 1968).
This footage will appear on an upcoming full-length D&RGW - Cumbres & Toltec DVD/Blu-ray - available sometime in early 2019.

Wow! Excellent video. Gave me goose bumps.
D&RGW 483 & 484 were chuffing through the countryside hauling a heavy load.
Another great video that I will watch over and over again! Thank you for sharing 😁💕🚂
Another great video! Thanks for sharing!
So so glad you are doing Blu-ray.
Beautiful video, thanks
Oh ,lovely.Like picture post card.
Nice video!
Very awesome!!! Loved this charter
Thank.s Beautiful.
It's always nice to see two Mikados K36 double in a train, with the magnificent panorama of the New Mexico countryside. a great video.
They look like twin engines.
@@jackwojno8530 I think you're right
Can't wait till they get the real #483 finished and under steam!
Very nice video. Thank you !
Kevin from Royal Marble sent me to this awesome video
After watching too much of the Big Boy videos, it just occurred to me that double headed mikes here are also a 4-8-8-4 in terms of total wheels.
Interesting how 2 identical engines sound like only one, as they don’t get in and out of synchronization.
The Real 483 was in major overhaul.

I love that sound with multiple tones going at once (What chime whistle is that?)
Thats a Lunkenheimer 3 Chime
UM VERDADEIRO ESPETÁCULO!
Epic!
i wonder if the whistle 483 (488) is wearing in the charter is 483's whistle from when she operated in the 70's
Are both engines really necessary? Can one not pull this short string of cars, or is this double header simply just to photo ops?
what bad timing I have. I was just there riding for the day not even a week earlier.
im a big fan of rio grande narrow gauge and cool video
i have your 315 dvd from last year, awesome stuff. so is this going to be on dvd as-well ?
Yes, I'll be making a DVD. It probably won't be ready until after Christmas.
awesome i cant wait
real cool
if you put one of these boxcars next to a 50 foot Standard Gauge boxcar it looks like a toy!
Still love Narrow Gauge Railroads
I do think they need to reconnect to Durango & Farmington
I understand it'd be impossible but I can hope
Durango to Farmington is a lot more possible than Durango to Chama. The Chama line now goes underneath a lake. The largest obstacle would that the track still goes underneath Walmart's parking lot.
Why was 488 in disguise as 483?
3:30 Looks like it's straight from the 1930s.
1968-2018
Unfortunately they have made these special excursions so expensive only the wealthy can afford it. You can still film from the railroad crossings for free.
ufo or drone?
5:35 sounds like a sloppy rod end clunking.
