was decided on the final day of the season. Five teams, JEF United Chiba (56pts), Kashima Antlers (56pts),
Urawa Reds (56pts), Gamba Osaka (57pts) & Cerezo Osaka (58pts), all had the chance to win the J.League title, and so all that
each team could do was win and hope it would be enough. Urawa Red Diamonds (white & black), had to beat Albirex Niigata (orange & blue) to have any chance of winning the title...
Urawa’s convincing 4-0 win was only enough to finish the season
in second place on 59pts, with a goal difference of +28. Gamba Osaka’s win over Kawasaki Frontale meant they were crowned champions, finishing just one point ahead on 60pts.
