Hi everyone! Thank you all for the all the likes, kind words and for getting this to 12k views! I made this video just over a year ago as a class requirement and was proud enough of it to archive it publicly here on my channel, hoping it would maybe help a few students who stumbled upon it. I've not been able to make similar videos since, though seeing all the people who found this helpful certainly makes me want to. That being said, are there any similar topics, concepts, or theories you'd like to see me cover in the same style as this video?
You have no idea how great of help your video has been! It's short, simple and crisp. Covers all the major points without making me feel dumb! Thank you!
okay but honestly this is the best explanation video I've ever seen. the images made me giggle throughout and I had to pause to appreciate the little word/picture associations. genius video. tysm!
I love the way in which you have decoded and encoded the messages of this particular reading which is very important for people in communication wonderfully done your slides are very interesting especially the one where which you throw out the window bravo keep it going and teach us more you're a good teacher
please make more videos like this! this was the only one that actually made me understand this topic! you could get really successful from this - if you do make more, please do more on the subject of communication and media theories! i cannot seem to understand hegemony, etc.
I didn't have time to go through the reading and analyze it in time for my midterms but this really helped so much and the presentation is nice, simple, and funny! You did great! thank you!
Thank you sos o much fpr this video. Most easiest and simplified expalnation ever of this theory. Was struggling with encoding, decoding so much but got it easily after your video. Quite in hegemonic position of your content ;)
Great video. Most videos on Hall and representation focus only on sterotyping and forced-upon media images and totally blend out his semiotic ideas about encoding/decoding.
This is a relatively old video but I like how what really confirmed to me that you were Filipino wasn't even the usage of the PTV logo (I was only half paying attention so I missed it the first time around) but when you used Nature's Prophet as a graphic everytime you mention nature lmao. But anyways, great video!
THANK YOU so much! your video help me lot to understand encoding/decoding. after watching couple of videos abt it but still concept was not clear but you explained it very well.
interesting topic! unfortunately im a bit swamped with school right now, so maybe some time in the future :D the section towards the end of this video about the variant decoding positions might be helpful though for a more political analysis! :) if you have any specific questions too i can *try* my best to answer them here
@@barlibo Thank you & I understand! I’ve started this course in university as well and soon enough I have to give an exam and so much things are unclear. One of the topics that I have to deal with is this one,,I pretty much understood it from your video in which you did a good job :) Anyhow, is this topic related to Critical Discourse Analysis? I’ve been explained that CDA is like semiotics but with an adding- it discovers the power relations within the text and I don’t really get what it means by that (in a practical way). If you can give me a brief explanation about it I’d be forever grateful lol. Also sub earned
@@hamsterluvr9460 thanks much for the sub! hoping to have more vids up soon. i'd say its definitely related to critical discourse analysis, as are most other theories on communication/media. I haven't studied CDA quite as in-depth but my impression is that it's a bit broader. Whereas encoding/decoding has a focus on the relationship between sender and receiver, just like the older models of communication, CDA seems to have greater focus on dominant practices within discourses and societies in general. With regards to power relations, I'd refer back to the idea of texts having a "connotative level" where they begin to be ideological. For example, a film with a female protagonist may be, on the surface, entertaining, thrilling, etc. But at the connotative level, one would examine if the use of a female character is meant to empower female representation (as it commonly is by female directors, writers) or fetishize it (as it tends to be with male directors--though this is changing with the times, too!) In Hall's model you'd probably take a look at the sender's intention and whether or not the receiver(s) interprets it that way, but in CDA your scope would probably be a lot broader, comparing it to other similar films/texts, and even real-world examples.
You might've just saved my grade.. Also, can you explain all the papers I have to read and write about? Cuz this was so much easier to understand than the actual papers :O
@@barlibo Understamdable, I just said it because I have dyslexia and I have to read a lot of academic papers for school that is too hard for me to understand, but you explained it in such a simple way that it was so easy to understand what the paper was 😬
@@linecrochets I feel you! Having to close read an overwhelming amount of reading materials is hard enough as it is, I can't imagine how difficult it must be with dyslexia :( best of luck to you! Hopefully when I have the time to make more vids like this they can come in handy for you again :)
Can someone tell me how Hall’s theory is anything more than a rehash of Barthes death of the author? I understand that Barthes didn’t say exactly what Hall is saying, but he did say that the audience plays a significant role on the construction of meaning. It seems that Hall is just explaining how Barthes is correct. That’s fine but I feel like it should be much more clear that Barthes is the real theorist here.

can you do fairclough's critical discourse analysis ? :
My professor assigned this reading and I felt so dumb, and I struggled reading every sentence. This vid was perfect, well-spoken and easy to digest. 😊
Hands down the most easily explained encoding/decoding video I have seen so far . Great work, we need more of this! Keep it up!
appreciate the positive feedback! glad I could help :)

I second that!

It's was literally good one. I was messed up with the whole essay, but this gave me hope. Thank you
Wish Hall could also explain it so well in a simplified way
omg incredible! I was struggling with this theory but you got it explained so easy. Thanks a lot!

thank you for this! i couldnt find anyone that included the full model and not just talking about decoding and incoding, yours was great!
glad i could help! :)
Video was poggers. I spent an entire day reading Hall over and over again when all I had to do was look up a summary.
I didn't have time to go through the reading and analyze it in time for my midterms but this really helped so much and the presentation is nice, simple, and funny!
You did great! thank you!
the explanation is so clear and the visual u presented to us just so fun and easy to understand
Great Video! Thanks for explaining the whole thing so profoundly well whilst being so entertaining! Greetings from Germany
We need more explanations like this! Hats off to you!

how come you dont have more views :( this is amazing
probably because I don't upload more often, haha! But hoping to remedy that soon. glad the vid helped! :)
Thank you for this! I struggled reading the essay, this is so much easier to understand. 🙂
THANK YOU for explaining this in such an understandable way :) really helped me out!
this is giving very proud teacher vibes.😊

This was so interesting! You should have a podcast :-)
glad you found it interesting! unforunately im too shy to do a podcast :)

Thank you so much for this video. It made the essay, Encoding, Decoding by Stuart Hall actually make sense.
Thank you so much. You actually condensed the whole idea and made it "digestible", especially with those images.
that's exactly what I hoped to do! glad I could help :)
My exam is two days from now and this help a lot
The memes are 👌
THIS IS AMAZING
Thank you so much for sharing

Can you do a video about analyzing a political discourse by the means of encoding/decoding system?
