when i was a teen i went 3 times to see this band , i am talking of the 70 in france , ohhhhhhhhhhh what a trip ...a very substantial music , and i am still tripping with that
what a great experiences , i have seen them 3 times in France and twice Steve Hillage band , of course this is a great influence in the life for me too, at least a great freedom of expressions , now there is still bands who make great music , but mostly for my taste the 70 are on top
Pretty magical you doing a Gong tune. I've loved them since seeing Daveid, Gilli, and "New York Gong" back in the late '70s. Reading out the Wiki page was a nice touch. Their first album--Camembert Electrique, or "Electric Cheese"--has their best standalone tunes, several of which rock real, real hard.
Zero the hero came down in his flying teapot to save us all. Gong are the ultimate hippy lsd band and included some really talented musicians such as Steve Hillage, Tim Blake and Didier Malherbe. David Allen being the zany ringmaster of it all. Totally unique and inspirational. Set yourself free, have a cup of tea (meaning smoke a spliff) and explore their crazy world. Have fun
I took too many drugs in the Californian desert a few years back, and had an ego death experience. While walking through a salt flat a bmw drove by at breakneck speed and i heard this song start playing in the background. It was at a turning point in my life and i was in a bad place while struggling with self doubt, regret and depression. The song (combined with the drugs) recontextualized how i felt about myself and my life. Not to mention i could hear every note of Steve Hillages guitar in slow motion. Some quotes i had heard that stood out to me at the time and still now: "Maybe youre wrong, maybe youre right" "it doesnt really matter if you make it so long as you try" "You just have to be what you are my friend!!" To me, the song has always had a double meaning, it is the Pot Head Pixies last message to Earth but because of Daevid Allens departure soon after it has always felt like HIS farewell message. So glad to see people trying out this amazing music. 🫖 Love Daevid, Steve and Gong!!
Gong have successfully transitioned from the passing of their founding member, Daevid Allen, and could conceivably keep going indefinitely. The playful whackiness has gone, but the trippy musical identity and quality remains intact. Gong isn't a specific set of people, it's a state of mind.
Hey guys, you just dipped your toe into the Canterbury Scene. II'd be a terrible human being not to mention legendary group CARAVAN, who were a top tier band from that sub-genre. Their music is so amazingly accessible. I'd like to throw out there a recommendation that you listen to the song, an absolute BANGER and curtain raiser called MEMORY LAIN / HEADLOSS, from the album FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT. What a name for an album! Their previous album IN THE LAND OF GREY AND PINK is in Rolling Stones top 50 prog albums of all time, but this one IMO is just a touch better. These guys can play, so be sure to check them out!

Followed Gong to every festival in the UK in the 70s and 80s.
I saw Gong live several times in the 1970s in the UK and once in Paris. They were a profound influence in my life.
