As soon as I hear the word therapist, I can't decide whether to laugh or cry but I always expect to hear the worst. Based on what I have seen, if you go to therapy, there is a real risk you will come out more fragile than when you went in. Then there are the models and techniques they use, like transactional analysis, developed for severely or dangerously ill individuals but used widely and in my opinion likely to give an individual more neuroses and psychoses than they started off with. I am 75 and for most of my early years, there were few therapists around and very few needing them but in the USA you would hear about people seeing their analyst regularly and we have imported this nonsense. Some people do need help but not as many as those who fashionably seek it!
