  • Singapore companies that are already moving their facilities to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone say they could face certain challenges like a lack of skilled manpower there.
    In fact, as Rebecca Metteo finds out, smaller businesses think they may not benefit much. Read more: cna.asia/3WelcVZ

    It is not due to a lack of skilled manpower; the workforce in Singapore is undoubtedly more highly educated than that of Malaysia. Let's be transparent, it is the cost that affects your profit margin.

      So what you are saying is that the people who provide money shouldn’t profit and therefore invest in businesses with high cost base or pay workers a lot more when they don’t capital risk. I agree that sometimes this goes very far, but without the capital there will be no investment here. They will just put the money elsewhere. No money no company no jobs.

      Hmm... let's have some numbers?

    • @staysafe-q7c
      @staysafe-q7c Месяц назад +2

      @@VideoVault-21century It's quite straightforward start with 8% compounded for 10 years minimum (some could be higher) at say $20bn - and you can figure out backwards what an industry/zone/country's companies will have to collectively profit year on year.
      Doesn't matter how many companies for this calc (although in reality it does). This will give you a rough number.
      Then let's say gross margins are across the board 60% as the cost of inputs and prices sold is fixed (where in reality inputs go up and prices could come down squeezing these margins).
      Then you will clearly see why Singapore with high cost of living and wages of employees makes it very difficult for companies.
      You can nitpick here and there but at a macro level, your operating cost base being high makes you uncompetitive. Econ 101.

      It is NOT about the cost of mp in the contest of M'sia v SGP, BUT in the context of competition from other countries like the PRC where PhD grads work for only a fraction of the SGP mp cost. The FACT that in SGP there is this skills upgrade fund etc only show that the so-called "elites" & Ministers did not or refused to acknowledge the reality of Lee Hsien Loong and Ho Chings losses amounting to hundreds of BILLIONs.

    This SEZ will primarily only be capital and labor intensive manufacturing. Moreover Malaysian culture of corruption and grafts are rampant and world notorious. Royal family members may also be a potential problem. This is what Singaporean companies and managers have to manage and deal with. Also, Malaysia doesn’t have sufficient local skill-worker as in China. Lastly, if the equity or capital market of Singapore and Malaysia doesn’t closely link, like HKSE and Chinese Shanghai SE and Shenzhen SE, the economic impact and growth between the two countries would be significant.
