  • Actor DEAN STOCKWELL was the guest on "Later with Bob Costas" on April 11th 1990. Stockwell was enjoying another wave of success in his 7 decade long Hollywood career with the NBC series "Quantum Leap" and David Lynch's "Blue Velvet". 22 minutes was not enough for all his stories! #deanstockwell #dennishopper #rogercorman #davidlynch #quantumleap #acting #interview #bobcostas #neilyoung

One of the greatest things about Bob Costas's old show was that he would always get celebs that you never saw on late night talk shows. And Dean was one of those guys that I always wanted to know more about. Only saw him in a handful of shows but knew he was terrific actor. I especially liked his portrayal of Howard Hughes in the movie "Tucker - The man & his dream".

I was six years old in 1980 when a local television station aired some of Dean’s films from his Child Star years. Three that immediately come to mind- Anchors Aweigh (1945), The Boy With Green Hair (1948) and Kim (1950)- are what made me fall absolutely in love with his performances.
At the time, I was too young to understand the “Boy” I watched in 1980 was a forty-four year old man who survived a lack of childhood, which he seemed to downplay during this interview, and would eventually restart a career that would end up spanning over seven decades!
I’ve always thought that Dean Stockwell deserved far more accolades during that seventy year span than he received.
Dean was more than just a fine actor! He was a loving father, an avid environmentalist, a Martial Artist earning the Rank of Instructor in Modern Arnis.
He was an inspirational artist, under his full name Robert Dean Stockwell, whose collages and sculptures are provocative and mesmerizing!
But most importantly, he was extremely protective of any children with whom he shared screen time, like Troian Bellisario, daughter of Don P. Bellisario and Deborah M. Pratt. And he made damn sure that his own children, Austin and Sophia, had the childhood he was denied!
    _Rest In Peace, Dean Stockwell (March 5th, 1936 - November 7th, 2021)._

Dean Stockwell was a fantastic actor in all he did,and a kind and well spoken human being. The Chemistry between Dean and Scott onscreen in Quantum Leap was just magic and what made that series work. I will always be sad that Donald Belisaro never gave the series a proper ending.

Dude, you posted this a while ago, and in a slightly longer form. When he starts about Blue Velvet on this one, it cuts off. In fact, there are a few cuts and edits (I'm actually now watching your original upload of this.) (I ripped it at the time! lol) Hope you don't mind me pointing it out. It's such a precious interview! MY fave Stockwell role is in "Psych Out"! :D Definitely love the freaks!
