I think the fact that Rick didn't just go to a universe where Birdperson was still alive, and instead tried to save his friend, shows that if nothing else, he genuinely cares about him. His nihilistic, pessimistic personality sure can be justified by his intellect, but for Birdperson, those things still fall away. It shows that some part of him really does want to care. To feel, like a normal person does.

What I see in the series is that Rick is trying to find a family that he can’t screw up with. But in the end he doesn’t realize that they have lives and emotions that are the one thing more intelligent then him.
Rick's life ended with the death of his wife, his family ended that day and he let revenge take over his life. Deep down he realizes he needs helps but doesn't want to feel weak so he suffer in silence as he hopes one of his family members could bring some meaningful to his life.
When you wake up don't watch TV, RUclipsrs, Ect... watch motivational videos or videos that'll get you in your emotions, it's better to feel something than push it away everyday!
