The fact that he already such a UNIQUE sound at such a young age is truly ASTOUNDING. You might like it or no, but having such a distinct musical identity at 19 is a wild feat. He will forever be my favorite.
My GOD! How quickly one forgets what an incredible pianistic genius he was -- when he CHOSE to display that side of himself. Transcendent -- INCANDSCENT -- virtuosity of the highest order.
Young man, but unique sound had already emerged. This is with the Toronto Symphony: "Playing in New York, a sort of debut-town, bothers me not at all; playing in one's hometown is sheer hell."
Tremendous intensity! Glenn´s musical range of expression, particularly in the introduction is so amazing, his technique in the 'Konzertstück' brilliant and staggering. What a pity that the piano was not tuned properly! :-(
Thanks so much for the post! Been looking for this particular performance for a LONG time (ever since I heard a short clip of it in a Gould documentary and was blown away by it); was it ever issued in any form to the public (official/bootleg/whatever?)?
Altijd de Goldbergvariaties, hoe goed ook, programmeren of de Sonate Facile, doet afbreuk aan het genie Gould. Gelukkig is er RUclips, want alle zenders zijn in hetzelfde bedje ziek!
Authenticity, even for “adults,” is rarely easy: tradition, taste, conformity all mitigate against it. I recall Horowitz wanting to sound like his mother, then his “uncle” (Scriabin), then at 13 only sound like himself. It takes awhile to discover who we quintessentialy are, perhaps especially in our creative expressiveness. I love Gould’s originality, but it can come, like any creative expression, at some cost to the composer’s music, musical taste or the performer’s artistic development. However, I would not change any artist. I would adjust, as I needed to, in what I listened to or how frequently. I like all artists better in some things they create than in others!

You can tell this is like an opera scene, a monolog. Wonderful melodic lines.

Who forgot? The recordings are still available in most cases and remain reference points for those have functioning ears.
I will never forget him.
I did not know this recording existed! Just listen to the mature nuance, musical sense and assured technique at the age of only 19!
One of the greatest moments in the history of piano....
Спасибо огромное!!! С любовью из России!!!
впечатляет,просто супер,и это в 18 лет...👍👍👍
Wonderful
love it. glenn never disappoints.
Music, so heavy, so deep, so speedy! So young as a genius is.

What a great post! Thank you - Gould was very special - an astonishing performance.

simple amazing genius glenn gould
Thank goodness for this precious recording. Gould probably would have dismissed Weber's Konzertstucke as too "showy" later in his life.
He probably bought it thinking it was Webern.
Wonderful performance…..
@StockhausenIsMyCat
of Gould? yes some rare live recordings, but now are avaible also on cd. in my channel you will find some of them.
Eat your heart out Seymour Bernstein . This is pure genius like no other.

So Gould was only 19 when this was recorded...sheesh!!!
Actually he was 18; the concert was in March 1951. Gould would turn 19 on September 25.
Quando suoni emani freschezza pura , e gioa.
Gould probably bought the sheet music for this and thought it was Webern, not Weber but then he just decided to roll with it.
Sam Lijmers ahahah
No , he liked the old music ;) .... like Bach
That's really funny!
Exactly, he didn’t like romantic music, if he knew… it was Weber, haha.
Good thing he decided to roll with it
This is definitely not "shy music"!
Thanks for posting this; I didn't even know it existed! Do you have anything else unusual?
Excuse me, it's "Konzertstuck" (singular).
Unrealy! Please, have you Goldberg music?

6:33 to 6:37 kind of sounds like Bridge Over Troubled Water
Fantasie hebben is OK, maar van te veel fantasie als jij hebt, god bewaar ons, heer!
