Thursday Stream: Painting Elllipses in Still Life

  • A few people have asked about ellipses, and a few more have asked about painting ceramic objects, so I'm conflating the two and painting that little green bowl above :)
    I imagine I'll be painting for an hour or so, and working 8 by 10 inches - feel free to paint along if you like.

    I am watching on RUclips. Loving what you are doing! There are folks on all platforms that seem to enjoy being critical. Most of them can do nothing themselves. So sad for them. Guess we can just pass over their comments. Thank you so so much!!! Can hardly wait to get my paints out!

    I bought a green bowl with a couple of ridges on it to help me learn how to paint an ellipse so this is exactly what I needed. I guess this student is ready for his teacher to appear just like the saying!

    Painting across the edge of the ellipse! It’s a small thing but it makes such a difference! That was a lightbulb moment for me. Thank you!

    • @PaulFoxton
      @PaulFoxton  2 года назад +2

      You're very welcome Wendy. I do make a habit of painting over edges whenever I can, when the values of the edge and the background or adjacent area are almost the same. I have a theory (with absolutely no proof!) that it involved the brain in almost creating the missing edge, much liek perception actually works. We tend to scan small areas of an image and then our brains interpolate based on a sampling of the image. We dont' actually "see" the whole thing.

    Very interesting how you used the guide lines to determine the ellipse. I too have wondered if an ellipse has perspective or if it’s equal. I repair and collect clocks and have been wanting to paint some of my antique clocks. If turned, the round clock dial becomes and ellipse that must remain in the same plan as the front of the clock case. Any tips on accurately painting an ellipse on the side of a cube in perspective?

  • @helenhill9482
    @helenhill9482 3 года назад +4

    I was taught to draw an ellipse with perspective, but the difference in curves front and back are mostly imperceptible so I don’t think it matters. I won’t tell my friend that though! She was my watercolour teacher, who made us draw them with perspective!
