This is it - one of TYBW's biggest moments ever has finally arrived. The question is...how did the anime do? Let me know your thoughts on TYBW Episode 35, Kyoraku vs Lille, and of course, Kyoraku's huge Bankai reveal! Thanks everyone!
I think they did great. some may be upset that there was no additional choreography added like Yama vs Royd, but I think it was still good nonetheless. They cooked unbelievably hard with the bankai though!
I’ve heard the theory why they are switching between Shunsui’s fight and Mayuri’s fight. They are trying to convey the fights are occurring simultaneously. That’s all.
Id say they are splitting the fights for pacing reasons. So these long fights don't feel like they are dragging on. Which honestly i feel like this was the right call now that I'm seeing it done in practice.
Tommo, the yellow of the bankai actually symbolizes the traditional culture of the japanese. The sound you hear that goes like “yoo” in its activation is what you would hear before a play starts in their tradition- just like how kyorakus bankai is also like a play with different acts in it!

It exists in Brazil too though. He could be French speaking African, Portuguese speaking African, Brazilian, Caribbean, he's definitely an amalgamation.
They’re not splitting the fights to pretend the good guys won I don’t think, but rather to make it feel like a big scale war on multiple fronts at the same time
While I do get that idea; I still think it would've been better if the break in the fight clearly happened when the captains are on the backfoot, rather than what happened with Mayuri where it still kinda seems like he's won.

I do believe that, with the way they split the fights, part 2 of Mayuri vs. Pernida will happen under the effect of Kyoraku's Bankai in the background, showing they are indeed happening at the same time. If that's the case I think it will be pretty cool.

Barro's fear as the disease effects hit him was palpable. Overall Shunsui got to flex his commander's pedigree quite perfectly. We know why he was made Commander. His philosophy only adds to it. Beautiful and eerie animation.
What I love about the disease is that obviously Lille doesnt regret damaging Shunsui from a moral standpoint, but the bankai is sneaky, cause of course he DOES regret blasting him now that the damage is shared, so it counts.
14:40 thats something different to what Lille's talking about😂. He was talking about an activated effect,l ending once the user is killed. We SAW that with Senjumaru. Now if you steal it (in which case it becomes yours) is another matter entirely
Lille's comment about Bankais disappearing does actually make sense. Because this isn't about stealing Bankai, this is about killing Kyouraku. He's saying that he knows for a fact that if he kills Kyouraku here now, he won't have to worry about the Bankai anymore.
He misinterpreted a few things this round. Like it was never stated Shunsui’s bankai made things darker but that was how they described the feeling. So he didn’t understand the gold background but hey we all love Bleach here.
I can't believe how much justice they did for Kyoraku. That Bankai has some of the best presentation out of anything else in the entire series. Cour 4 is going to go absolutely ballistic once we reach Askin and Gerard's fights.
This is the moment we’ve been waiting for! I actually didn’t mind the green wings on Lille Barro. The theatre suicide being golden like lights on a stage was a cool interpretation of the bankai.
6:50 Actually, it was introduced in the Fullbring arc. When Ginjo was training Ichigo, he made Ichigo be able to see with his Spiritual Pressure after he blinded Ichigo.
6:36 This is one of my favorite moments in all of Bleach, and the moment that solidified Shunsui as my favorite character. Characters constantly overexplaining their powers and abilities during fights is clearly an anime trope, but as easy as it is to make fun of, I think it's a necessary trope, because in shows with such weird powers, we just need an explanation for how they work. I think the shows that use these tropes usually tend to do a decent job of at least giving us character reasons for why they overexplain things. The problem to me comes when you try to subvert expectations with the trope. A perfect example is Rose vs Mask. Rose explaining his power, only for Mask to use it against him is just lame and a terrible way to poke fun at the trope. Then we get to Shunsui and Lille. When Shunsui explains that he was able to essentially create a reishi Shadow Clone, and Lille says that that's not possible, you immediately expect Shunsui to go into an explanation for how he did it, but he doesn't. In one of the best character moments ever, he just flexes and proclaims that he is the Captain-Commander, implyng that what he did isn't _impossible,_ but _only_ possible for someone of a certain caliber of shinigami, a high caliber that only few can reach, even amongst Captains. If you're gonna subvert a trope, _this_ is how you do it. It's just a brilliant character moment that I don't see people talk about enough.
The moment is even better than that taking everything into consideration, even if Shunsui doesn’t know it. Because as Shunsui explains, Lille accidentally solely relied on Reikaku, a mistake he attempts to say he wouldn’t make regardless. And of course Shunsui cuts him off saying of course he’d make that mistake if Shunsui said he did. Citing his position. Inadvertently saying that the prestige and skill of the position of Captain Commander is greater than the position of Leader of the Schutzstaffel.
I think the anime is thinking of these fights differently to make it clear that the captains are no longer the ones fighting their enemies. Mayuri vs Purnida Kyoraku vs Lille Nemu vs Purnida Nanao vs Lille Splitting the episodes up likely makes it more clear that it is the lieutenants that take over for the captains.
I think the split-up is still just to show the "war" element of everything happening at once. Like sure, Mayuri's in trouble with Pernida, but Kyoraku's group is still under fire from Lille, so they don't have time to really worry about it. It'd be weird to have multiple episodes straight of Mayuri vs Pernida without the audience wondering what Lille was doing that whole time. I think the uninterrupted fight works better in the manga than in an anime. EDIT: Also, of course, my favorite captain got an awesome bankai animation.
15:44 his bankai doesn't actually plunge the area into darkness. The bankai doesn't actually change the weather ir anything. It's just a feeling it gives.
I think the only exception to the Bankai disappearing rule is if the Bankai was stolen. Considering after Driscoll stole Chojiro’s Bankai, it effectively belonged to him at that point and therefore he became the wielder of it.
@@ARandomEliatropeYhwach did it to humiliate & break Yama. Yama went from a formidable rival, to a number in Yhwach's to-do list while in Seireitei, right below recruiting Aizen (albeit he failed on that part). Part of Yhwach's MO is to allow his opponents to experience hope, only to snatch it away right when it's at its highest. In the final fight, SK Yhwach made a speech about how he'll let everyone live, & just when they've finally regained hope for the future, he'll appear & kill them at their happiest moment. SPOILERS, just in case: He also did something similar to Ichigo (& in a meta kind of way, to the readers as well) during Ichigo's 1st fight with SK Yhwach: as the hype for Ichigo's true Bankai reveal is at its peak, Yhwach immediately & nonchalantly broke Tensa Zangetsu as soon as it is unveiled by Kubo, turning what should've been a moment of hope & turnabout for the MC into a moment of absolute despair.
@@ARandomEliatrope I mean stealing the bankai basically crippled Yama from fighting back and Yhwach gets to humiliate and kill the guy who wrecked him a thousand years ago so why wouldn't he steal the bankai?
For me, the most stand out part of this episode HAS to be the OST. Multiple times throughout the episode I caught myself noticing how good it was, which is something that rarely happens.
After watching the anime, i presume the “yellow” as an inverted colour of Darkness and Despair and it show better in the Night of the Wahrwelt Yellow is always the colour of despair and sadness in Japanese traditional arts
Love that Katen Kyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju has that "ancient latern paper" glow, along with the clapping blocks and the "yo-oh!" in the background, like a Noh play, or even a Bunraku play. The large dao (Chinese Sabers) that Kyoraku's Shikai becomes, was perfect, driving them into the ground, and letting the darkness spread like ink from a sumi-e painting. Like that the Bankai affects the entirety of War Whelt, explaining why he didn't use it against Stark. The diseases, the frantic swimming to reach an impossible goal, then an inescapable decapitation. It would've been easy and cheap to make it a totally black background, and just had set switches; The Bankai "dans" really flow together nicely, and the dialogue with Ohana is just icing!!! COLDDDDDD BANKAI.
One little detail I liked was when Shunsui was asking if Lille would go ahead and close his eye he had a goofy look but, after Lille pulls out the permanent effect card, Shunsui has a deadpan face like ofc you can keep it open now
Shunsui's Bankai doesnt cause any physical changes to the environment in its looks, it's just a chillness inside your spine. So, the volor choice given the correlation to traditional Japanese theater feels fitting. The "dark and lonely" as mentioned by Kyoraku isn't about the world being plunged into darkness, but rather the feeling of despair you get when you are about to witness a tragedy unfold in the theaters but can do nothing to stop it
They presented his Bankai in a really cool way, and Katen is such a baddie! 😍 Also, probably a hot take, but Lille's wings being green was a great idea, imo, and I'm glad he wasn't CGI
@@TheLostVagabond-01 Glad you like them, too, but I know many people expected them to be golden etc. However, I think the green wings look cooler and more menacing
As a massive Shunsui fan myself I actually really like thst now even shunsuis bankai has two completely different sides to it in both the anime and manga. The manga fully leans into the darkness within him for one of the most ominous bankais in the series while the anime leans more into the more "lighthearted" part of shunsui making the bankai more of a theater then ever. Great episode in my opinion.
I think the gold is meant to represent the illumination of the curtains and wooden panels of a traditional Kabuki theatre, the kind of place where Katenkyokotsu's plays would be performed.
Lille Barro's pronunciation is "Lee-J" Gerard Valkyrie said his correct name after he insulted him for not seeing the Royal Palace illusion when they were first summoned by Yhwach.
Man we have waited 9 years for this moment and it's finally here!! I love the confidence Urahara and Kyoraku have in Mayuri! Kyoraku's bankai is absolutely insane!! Lille Barro's Holy Form is wild!! This was another peak episode!! I love Nanao's confidence, she has definitely grown, the fight was fantastic, the animation was brilliant, I love the banter between Kyoraku and Ohana/Katen! What Perriot Films has done with this Cour is absolutely insane💯
The yellow backdrop makes sense historically and was probably added since it would be hard to make the background any darker than it already was, but I do agree that a lot of what made Shunsui's bankai so unnerving was that inherent darkness and the chills that it's power gave off.
The reason the 2 fights are spliced like that is a film technique used to show 2 separate things that are happening during the same time period. If they did 1 fight then the other it gives the audience the impression that the fights happen sequentially.
7:21 HIGHLY doubt we get them running into Gerard, at the end of this core. Episode 10 is Mayuri pt2. 11 is Shunsui part 2. I feel like episode 12 will be Baz B and Jugram. So if they end it at 12, itll end on them. Or they go to 13 and make Baz B v Jugram a 2 part. But i guess we will see. As far as the gold sky, they had to do it. For one, cause like you say, it looks like a traditional theater background. But also.......the sky was already black lmao. So they couldnt just make it black. In the manga, the sky was just blank, not colored in. So the transition can go to black. But in the anime, they cant do that. Otherwise it would look like literally nothing happened when he used his bankai lol.
Stark and Kyoraku are my favorite characters in the entire series, you can imagine how excited I was to see this episode and even more so to see your reaction, Bleach saved 2024 fr 😮💨💎
Im thinking that splitting up the fights is to signify all the fights currently being shown are happening simultaneously. Although the idea of them waiting patiently to start their own fight as soon as the current fight finishes is pretty funny.
I would like to add that for me i prefer to have the fights splitted, it gives a sense of a real battlefield, it give the impression that all give are happening at the same time which is fine for a final war arc. Another reason why i think it’s a good choice is changing players at the scene, personally in a multicombat arc giving much screentime to one characters can be a little bit boring, expectially if you don’t really appreciate that one, so having like this i think is só entertaining!! In the last couple of weeks we had uryuu vs renji, mayuri vs pernida; kyoraku vs pernida is amazing!! Last thing excellent job and dedication to these review i really love what you is amazing to have this space to discuss bleach!!
I was just looking for you reaction and the moment i check you channel, its uploaded! That episode was insane! Im happy how it turned out! Finally seeing it animated for 5 years when i finished bleach and i al not disappointed at all!
No doubt I would have prefered Shunsuis Bankai to be black but I think they adapted very well given that they chose the sky to be black already. Everything else about it was amazing. 9.5/10 loved it
I also think that the reason there is a Golden sky covering everything is because it's supposed to be as if they have gone into a scroll telling a story that's why you hear the "yoow" chant when it's activated! Absolute cinema!!
When Lille said if user die, the bankai is disappeared. This is makes sense actually, if bankai still attach on the user and being killed the bankai is also gone, except if you able to preserve it or transfer it into a thing such as the device that quincies had
lille wasn't talking about when the bankai was stolen. He meant when the shinigami dies the bankai ends no matter what so if he kills shunsui immediately he won't have to worry about whatever effects it has. I completely agree about showing mayuri in this episode not only was it a waste of episode time that could've gone to lille but it defeats the purpose of not finishing the pernida fight this episode. Good episode overall as usual this cour. But still lots of questionable decisions made.
Shocked we’re seeing Karamatsu Shinju this early on, but not at all disappointed. Seeing its power and area of effect animated shows exactly why he didn’t use it against Stark in fake karakura
Looks like they’re making the “cliffhanger” that the bad guys survived. So next ep will start like this one but with Kyoraku getting blasted then cut to Mayuri.
Shunsui is a genius level fighter and has such crazy thought provoking techniques. Kyroaku's Bankai reminds me of Senjamaru's Banaki and its broken because it warps reality he really is the Goat capatain commander. Lillie Barrao is definitely an ancient being and knowledgeable and broken like crazy cant wait for the conclusion for this fught. This was my favorite episode of this Cour and this Bankai reveal is top 3 for me in all of Tybw
There is something truly awesome about all the AoE bankai. I always wanted for Rukia's bankai to be like Yamamoto bankai only her would freeze entire Seireitei if left running long enough :)
I think what Lille meant when he said “if the wielder of the bankai dies then the bankai goes with him” is that if the person who’s activated the bankai dies then the bankai vanishes. Not that if it’s stolen and the person dies the bankai also dies.
What I appreciate about them showing Lille open his eyes 3 times is that it reinforces how strong and efficient Shunsui is. He basically killed Lille 3 times already.
Actually, the episode is really great. And the good news is that not only the Shunsui bankai was shown with dignity, but also the Barro’s folshtanding looks cool, despite the fact that not everyone initially liked the green wings.
I will 100% be waiting each day for your glazing video on this episode. The most anticipated bankai for me. Urahara is a very close second. Jeez, all these fights at the end are just so epic.
HEEEYY..Pernida is also displayed in its True Form in the Opening! ..expected but really fun to see! YEEEESSSSSS thnaks for the reaction i love your vids
I feel like they spent less time animating the Mayuri fight so the Shunsui fight would look as good as possible. Kind of a bummer. Still an incredible episode
Seeing my favorite Bankai animated like this was so freaking epic! Loved every moment of it! Something about Bankais that are AOE's are just my favorites.
This episode is the embodiment of the Home Lander Perfect Meme, I don't think anyone was expecting the yellow background that resembles old paper or the tree to sketch itself on the ground like black ink staining the paper but I'm glad everyone I've seen have a positive reaction to it and honestly I wouldn't know how they would've represented the darkness at all other then Tommo's idea or making the tree white or red instead of black so it can be seen in the darkness. We also got our question answered with the episode separation it's just a flip flop between Kyoraku's and Mayuri's fights and I'm assuming a extended Friend Saga to finish the cour off. It's definitely been split up for viewership reasons and Pernida escaping getting shown I would assume is the way of saying hey the fights not finished for anime onlies but then again the next episode title could've said that and those extra few seconds could've been saved for a better cliff hanger
I'm on the same page as Tommo here. I love the theatre aesthethic with the golden sky of Shunsui's Bankai, I do miss the dark and dreadful atmosphere effect it has in the manga and Shunsui's comment about it looking dark and gloomy also threw me off like "what do you mean? Its bright as hell around here". I absolutely love the almost squeal-like excitement you jad when Shunsui was about to activate Karamatsu Shinju, that made my day 😂
I think the splitting of the fights is in part to pay homage to Fake Karakura Town (I assume since many anime only watchers probably see that as the last great arc before now), but mainly I think it’s to build the tension for newcomers; creating a sense of intrigue since unlike manga readers, they don’t know what happens next.
@matthewmuir8884 yes but that was only one of 2 terrible deus ex machina moments. The nanao one was always worse because there was literally zero foreshadowing at all. The arrow, in the manga, at least had that panel of young uryu seeing his dad open up his deceased mother Nanao's sword came out of absolutely nowhere in the manga and it's baffling that they're just going to do that again
@@Ray03595yeah I'm guessing gerard will still be immortal and only auswahlen can kill him. Nanao's asspull deus ex machina is still going to happen, and i imagine that we still won't get to see ichigo do anything cool with his new bankai
They did my Boy shunsui so good loved the detail of lille opening his eyes throughout the fight I can't remember if kubo showed that in the manga but I noticed it twice
Finally finished building a house and as of the last few days, moved in. First episode in the new forever home and it was an epic one. Will be a cool way to remember moving into this house.

He also did something similar to Ichigo (& in a meta kind of way, to the readers as well) during Ichigo's 1st fight with SK Yhwach: as the hype for Ichigo's true Bankai reveal is at its peak, Yhwach immediately & nonchalantly broke Tensa Zangetsu as soon as it is unveiled by Kubo, turning what should've been a moment of hope & turnabout for the MC into a moment of absolute despair.
Sounded like they used a Bodhidharma chant for the OST during the first game. Beautiful.
this episode made kyorakus bankai even more aesthetically beautiful
Shunsui's bankai was perfect animated with the best music in the background too
After watching the anime, i presume the “yellow” as an inverted colour of Darkness and Despair and it show better in the Night of the Wahrwelt
Yellow is always the colour of despair and sadness in Japanese traditional arts
Shunsui flexing hard this episode... 💪
"Who do you think I am?" asked Shunsui calmly
Also, probably a hot take, but Lille's wings being green was a great idea, imo, and I'm glad he wasn't CGI
not a hot take imo the green was perfection
Lille Barro's pronunciation is "Lee-J"
Gerard Valkyrie said his correct name after he insulted him for not seeing the Royal Palace illusion when they were first summoned by Yhwach.
8:21 the way the blood falls to reveal the shadow behind it is so awesome
The yellow backdrop makes sense historically and was probably added since it would be hard to make the background any darker than it already was, but I do agree that a lot of what made Shunsui's bankai so unnerving was that inherent darkness and the chills that it's power gave off.
The reason the 2 fights are spliced like that is a film technique used to show 2 separate things that are happening during the same time period. If they did 1 fight then the other it gives the audience the impression that the fights happen sequentially.
You know Tommo is excited when he keeps his feet on the chair!😂🔥🔥
You can tell Tommo is excited when his voice actually cracks at the moment.
They were already plunged in depressing darkness lol if they just made it darker people would find a way to complain saying it was lazy
At 4:24 you can see they added Pernida’s true appearance into the opening just like they did in the ending for last week.
Cool detail i didn’t spot
Funny how Mr Tommo said Pernida right at that moment.
But yes. I was also coming in to say the same as you.
I love the extent of the area affect from the bankai; I made it feel so more tangible than the manga
There are 13 episodes for each cour
Momo got the biggest facelift in anime history dude. She looks completely different in TYBW.
She looks way better and a bit more mature.
i didnt recognize her at first when the cour dropped
@ its like she changes every time she’s on screen. she seemed different during Komamura and Bambietta’s fight
One of my favorite bankai without a doubt. Starrk would be so happy to see it if he could😭. Fantastic episode and bankai delivery imo
9.5/10 loved it
The green on Lille's voldstadig was actually cool.
I hate the green color scheme it should be yellow since Barro represents a biblical angel.
The yellow is basically the spotlight at the beginning of a play. It looked awesome
The people complaining about it don't know what the yellow actually is
lille wasn't talking about when the bankai was stolen.
PEAK FICTION!! THE MF GOAT SHUNSUI KYORAKU!! Episode was 10/10!! It did not dissappoint!!
Shocked we’re seeing Karamatsu Shinju this early on, but not at all disappointed. Seeing its power and area of effect animated shows exactly why he didn’t use it against Stark in fake karakura
they have represented his bankai as huge theater curtain over the battlefield and I love it !
shout out to the people that didn't make it to see this episode finally animated
Looks like they’re making the “cliffhanger” that the bad guys survived. So next ep will start like this one but with Kyoraku getting blasted then cut to Mayuri.
I think Dory needs to give Lille major swimming lessons 🤣
the music was outstanding
The Bankai being yellow was actually incredibly purposeful, note the grid-like patterns and compare that to Kabuki theatre...
The voice for the poem is child/young Nemu, I believe.
I though was Nanao spirit Zanpakuto that looks like a kid.
I love how terrified Lille looks when he gets holes blasted in him. It's a *really* good facial expression.
Everything was executed perfectly!! 🔥🔥🔥🫡🫡🫡
This was peak. Pure and simple. Lille and Kyoraku. Zilliel and Kyoraku’s Bankai. The colors, new music, everything, just wow.
There is something truly awesome about all the AoE bankai.
I always wanted for Rukia's bankai to be like Yamamoto bankai only her would freeze entire Seireitei if left running long enough :)
They nailed it!! What a great time to be a Bleach fan 😭
The part I don’t understand tho, is why Kyoraku unable to move after Lilie barro transformed and be sniped
I think what Lille meant when he said “if the wielder of the bankai dies then the bankai goes with him” is that if the person who’s activated the bankai dies then the bankai vanishes. Not that if it’s stolen and the person dies the bankai also dies.
FINNALLY!!
Most deadliest and depressing bankai
Never let Shunsui anywhere close to a Tenshintai
I look forward to these reactions as much as the episode.
What I appreciate about them showing Lille open his eyes 3 times is that it reinforces how strong and efficient Shunsui is. He basically killed Lille 3 times already.
was straight up cinema this episode
I like how they also brought back the reiatsu-shaking-effect when Kyoraku activated bankai
I feel like I don't see enough persons remarking how shocking it was to see the graphic detail of the jizo's eye exploding
When I was watching this I knew Tommo would be freaking out over this. It was so good!!
HEEEYY..Pernida is also displayed in its True Form in the Opening! ..expected but really fun to see! YEEEESSSSSS thnaks for the reaction i love your vids
The green wings compliment the gold/yellow background.
I absolutely love the almost squeal-like excitement you jad when Shunsui was about to activate Karamatsu Shinju, that made my day 😂
Did you notice in the opening it showed a diffrent shot of Pernida before the drop
Tommo 2 years ago :
Lille's Vollständig looks weird but I can see what Kubo was going for.
Tommo today:
11:02
LMAO, I like this man 👏🏻
I'm really sad about not having any forshadowing for nanaos sword still, that just tells me tha Kubo is happy the way it is I guess
Yup, worrying about how the final battle will play out. He gets a redo to not throw in something ridiculous
@@Ray03595 The silver arrow has been foreshadowed with Ryuken holding pieces of silver in his hand.
@matthewmuir8884 yes but that was only one of 2 terrible deus ex machina moments. The nanao one was always worse because there was literally zero foreshadowing at all. The arrow, in the manga, at least had that panel of young uryu seeing his dad open up his deceased mother
Nanao's sword came out of absolutely nowhere in the manga and it's baffling that they're just going to do that again
@@Ray03595yeah I'm guessing gerard will still be immortal and only auswahlen can kill him. Nanao's asspull deus ex machina is still going to happen, and i imagine that we still won't get to see ichigo do anything cool with his new bankai
yea.....
They did my Boy shunsui so good loved the detail of lille opening his eyes throughout the fight I can't remember if kubo showed that in the manga but I noticed it twice
How I wish to see Ukitake Bankai
Great reaction 👍🏾
Finally finished building a house and as of the last few days, moved in. First episode in the new forever home and it was an epic one. Will be a cool way to remember moving into this house.
