    Your beautiful paradise is now opening its beautiful hidden treasures and even more usable spaces for your families use, so glad you’ve decided to chop the thorns down because they are so invasive. Now you can get to those beautiful stone walls and uncover them for their historical charm. What beauty unfolds ❤🎉

    Loved the vlog and the land looks so much better having some room too breathe, I would find an Arborist to talk too about the forest and what it needs too thrive, wild areas are actually a lot of work and you can see that if not looked after it can almost strangle the land with things like brambles, ivy etc. it all looks green on the outside because it’s all trying to fight for the same bit of sunlight but underneath at the ground level its another story. You are all doing an amazing job bringing the land back to life and you can do so much going forward and I for one can’t wait to follow along and see you achieve your dreams. 🥰

    I know it’s tempting but forrest have to be managed. Not just left .Not only fires but the health of your trees and future trees and plants .learning about native and getting rid of invasive species . It helps your wild life and actually draws more wild life. It also keeps you perpetually in wood with out depleting your trees . You guys are such hard workers . So glad you have discovered your ancient terraces . You have so many hidden resources just waiting to be discovered . The gates are fantastic that wheel. Will come in handy as someone who was tasked with getting out and opening the gates as the youngest sister.

    You made the appropriate choice with the brush hogging. Your soil quality already has a high level of organic material so the new mulched layer will just make it better. When you approach a rainy season (or do it now if you can water the area daily) you can broadcast a desirable grasses seed blend (lightly rake it into the soil/mulch blend) in these areas to compete with the brambles roots - because they will be back. And if Badger can go around the edges of the brush hogged areas and strim that last little bit against the walls and at the hillside edge, it will be perfect. Your best bet for the forest is three milking goats. You will need an electrified wire fence around the perimeter and the resolve to milk them every day. The process is strimming a clear pathway for the fence so it does not "ground out" , stepping in fiberglass poles and stringing two lines of wire that will be electrified by a solar fence energizer. Milking goats are the most docile and the least likely to stray. THe quantity of 3 is because that is the minimum for the "herd instinct" and if there supplemental feed, water, shelter and milking station is all in one place, even if they have gone on a walkabout, they should return at dusk. Hoping some of that is useful!

    • @THESCOTTERS
      @THESCOTTERS  Год назад +2

      That is all very useful thank you! We would absolutely love to get some goats one day soon but want to be fully prepared for them but it’s definitely the best long term solution for land management that’s for sure!

    Great job on the clearing of the land. Plus thinning the trees gives the trees so much more light and they're healthier when areas are thinned out. Otherwise a trees root system may be so weak from trying to find water that it tumbles over competing with so many trees. That really defeats nature.

    Even though brambles are amongst the best green covers for animals and birds , and are native- they have to be controled- your place is ever more beautiful.
    About the pigs- assuming you have a small section where there is smoe shade from the sun, I would put the pigs where you are to move your vegetable garden. Pigs work wonders at cleaning up and fertilizung the land. You would obviously need strong fencing in place, but with boars about, it is already a prerequisite for a place like your for even having a veggie garden. Até já..

    A quick, and easy, way to check square is to measure diagonally across the rectangle, if both diagonals are the same, it is square. Or you could just buy a 3ft framers square . . .
    at some point, any small farm will benefit greatly from a small tractor. clean up and maintenance are so much faster.

    To help eliminate brambles mix 3 litres white vinegar 1 kg salt and a teaspoon dishwashing detergent. Spray all leaves and branches and stems. Best to do on hot dry day. It is good to see you are brush hogging the terraces this will give you great access to clear them establish what to use them for however keep on top of maintenance especially during summer. Beware of leeches near the spring. What a beautiful property rising from the brambles and weeds. If you plan to get chooks and pigs, may I suggest getting their housing and feed bins etc well ready before they arrive. Also remember they require daily care so your travels plans must include someone to care for them. Also, I suggest sourcing a good vet prior to their arrival. Following from Australia.

    Wow just amazing hillside/ gradient. I would look at keeping your long term costs down in irrigation type systems and pumping water everywhere. Finding the highest point on your farm / Quinta/ plot of land, would be to build one large round reservoir to hold at least thirty / eighty thousand litres of water, then place those plastic protected water tanks at every level all the way to the bottom having an overflow pipe starting from your reservoir to each tank. Then from each tank at each level run a plastic pipe (with a ON - OFF Valve) to feed whatever you want to grow against the wall of each terrace. This way everything will be gravity feed from catching all your rainwater from your roofs. Just saying. Yes, tomatoes are doing well, although you have some late blight showing on your leaves. This is the best way to encourage your children to eat fresh fruits and vegetables straight from your garden. Just love it. Kids on holiday, but you have lots of vegetables and fruits to pick/ pickling and freezing. Not all is lost.

    Badger, I strongly encourage you to continue buying lumber from your local mill. That is a wonderful way to support small business. What you can do to protect your investment is to begin "stickering"the lumber that comes from the mill. This is how it's done. ruclips.net/video/hTSTwdOTwJY/видео.html The only thing I can add is store the stack under your open air barn roof. Do not cover the stack. It is all about air circulation. And, I would add stout timbers on the very top that line up with you stickers and place some heavy weights on the timbers. Large clean stones will do nicely. I hope this is helpful 😊

    Hi Badge, Hi Kayla, great job clearing the land the way you did. It was very needed!! Long term maintenance, have you thought of using goats? Not only can you get all the milk / cheese from them, but they can keep clearing the land for you. You can get mobile electric fences and change their area wherever you need a clearing done.
    Well done on training Pudding :) She is doing so well. I wanted to share a trick I did with all of our dogs, which was specific hand signs with each command. As our dogs got older, they lost their hearing, and only responded to our hand signing. I also found it useful if they ran away across too far or couldn't really hear us. I also found at least with them that body language was in the end even more responsive to vocal command. It's great too,vif you end up in a noisy environment or loud machinery.
    I think your property is looking amazing, and wish you the best in the house build :)
    Happy holidays to the kids!!!
