57 years of news. Thank you Good Luck. Would be nice if maybe this station makes a comeback in news format again on the internet or other way to keep the fan base going such as going up a frequency on the dial funded by the fans by the people whose life it impacted... That is the magic of radio to unite people with enlightenment and a sense of community.
Well, what can one say. I remember 880 WCBS way back in the late 60s. I am 63 years old now, have not lived in NYC since 1980. However I remember WCBS playing in our home on an old 1950s style radio and in my Dad's car. It's sad that they the have sunset this station. It will live forever in our memories. I wish all the personalities the best of luck. Just another piece of my childhood drifting away......
I first knew about WCBS when I listened in my father's car during trips. He preferred WCBS over WINS for news, and so did I. Thank you for watching, and have a good night.
Another one of the things you thought would be around forever is gone. Grew up on WCBS when it was known as Newsradio 88. Thank you for recording and posting the final moments and the switch to ESPN radio. A huge loss of WCBS.
A little bit of an emotional shock because for me it’s definitely something that’s always been there. Even when I was a kid I liked listening to the different stations from different cities across the country. Definitely the end of an era in broadcasting.
@@todderbert KMOX leaving the air is a distinct possibility because they have been working on putting together a group of FM affiliates and an HD2 on a larger station. That HD2 doesn’t make it this far. A thread running through this is the fact that Audacy runs every one of these stations. Disney has all kinds of money for things like that, Audacy is slowly going bankrupt. That’s what happens when they buy up more than their worth. So sad for that but larger companies like that mismanage a lot of things. There used to be a time when they were not allowed to own more than a couple of affiliates (usually one on MW and one on the FM) for that reason. And talk stations on FM are a huge waste of bandwidth and electricity. At one time everything was all across the MW band.
Sad departure of WCBS in New York City. AM is unfortunately dying a thousand deaths, but this station held fast for a long time. A century of public service. Sorry to see such a stalwart source of news disappear.
Well I did. It was a few minutes where a lot of WCBS' radio personalities like the late Charles Osgood, and Mary Kay Williams formerly of NJ PBS and then an story was told by the announcer, and then, "This is WHSQ and WCBS-FM HD2 New York, ESPN NY.
I understand, but sports seems to be the big-time spoken word format these days. All-news is a lucrative but expensive format to operate, which is why there aren't many of those stations today.
I did put together the “Final Sign-Off” using two different sources, the online version and the off-air version from AM radio. I pieced them together to hear a full proper sign-off, because the commercial loads was interrupted halfway through which was annoying. So I used the off-air from AM radio courtesy of Diamond Joe. So I ended up with the full complete sign-off which was 15 minutes long. ruclips.net/video/8Xwsrt76-zc/видео.htmlsi=b5Znd26V1nJ9KI3H
Nice! These online streams will load up with ads at the most inopportune times. I'm glad you were able to piece them together. Thank you for watching, and have a good night.
@@tvradio1972 next time try extracting a direct URL of the stream using your web browser's console (in the Network tab), and play it & record it using VLC or similar app. If that stream gets interrupted with ads then I don't know what else could help you LOL
Audacy killed the 50000 watt clear channel and plus I still miss NewsRadio 880 on 880 KHz in Southern Connecticut, what a waste, but I was able to get the sign off on my baijilali kk-9 shortwave radio before 12:01am
I don't think so. There simply isn't enough room for two all-news stations in New York anymore. The other Audacy news and talk stations, including KYW, are safe.
I cannot believe that Wcbs NewsRadio 880 Is Gone And I Was Sad That They Were Signing Off The Air After 57 Years Of Bringing News.Weather.Traffic.Sports On Wcbs NewsRadio 880 But At 12:01am Last Night It Was Over That Wcbs NewsRadio 880 Had Ceased Operations And Now I Know It's Called Espn New York 880 Am But I Know 98.7 Fm Will Be Changing To A New Music Channel Or Probably All News Format On August 31
So they're willing to drop some long time legendary call letters for some call letters don't that don't mean anything? I would have dropped w i n s WCBS seems a little more legendary.
WINS became an all-news station a few years before WCBS did. However, I preferred WCBS's approach to news more than WINS approach. As for the call letters, they had to get rid of them sooner or later due to the ownership change to Audacy.
I also have that, but I used my Panasonic RF-500 which I found at a thrift store late last year. I heard the last 9 minutes and the format flip. In my opinion, they should've just broadcast a loop telling listeners that they had signed off, and turn the transmitter off. WCBS is gone, at the age of 57. WCBS 1967-2024. 😢
I just heard it to in New York as well Rest in peace to WCBS 880.
Thanks for the recording Mr. TVRadio
You're welcome. At least we still have the memories of WCBS.

Been a tough week in New York man 🪦 to wcbs 880 and now ESPN WEPN-NY 98.7 and that results the end of the ESPN NY tonight guys of Larry and Gordon
