As a complete newbie, and a self teaching one at that, I found the knuckle part actually extremely helpful. So thanks! It REALLY needs some getting used to, but it definitely prevents me from muting that darn high e chord (e-guitar) :)
Eric ihave been taking lessons for three years and still have trouble with muted strings.Your video on curling the last knuckle has helped me more than all my other one on one instructors put together. Thanks a lot. Larry Thomas
I tried to play buddy holly, all my chords sounded ass. Looked this up, did the knuckle trick, almost nailed it on the first try. One of the best guides I’ve ever seen. Thank you.
Have accidentally found that video because i ve tried desperetely to solve the muted string problem for two weeks now. Fantastic how just one little tip can change everything. I initially play piano and there is also the same secret - wrist rotation that no one teaches at music schools. people who play piano will understand what i mean. that secret can change the way you play dramatically. sincerely - Thank you for the advice.
Impossible, no matter how I curl my knuckles or adjust my grip. Most chords are fine, but this one is killing me. My last hope is that my action is a little too high.
I have been struggling with touching the unwanted strings for almost over a year till the point I wanted to give up playing guitar. I just tried your knuckle tip tonight. I finally strike a clean string first time in my life! Thank you!!!
Wow, thank you. I was getting frustrated, and I searched for help on muted notes. I saw your video and I scoffed until you finished demonstrating. Then I tried it.......just wow. Thank you for helping us with little tips.
Today is my 4th day with the guitar and I was practising for 30 minutes and I could not understand why did I mute my strings because I did play on my fingertips and all that jazz, long story short that was what I was doing wrong. Thanks.
Hi. I have played guitar for 3 months and my guitar teacher never told me that, you saved my life. Obviously I have to train more but I see the difference.
Holy sh*t. My fingers are really short -No kidding- and it's my first time learning the guitar. Been having problems ringing out the strings because of my short, chubby fingers. And damn, I tried this trick and it actually freaking works! Thank you so much!!!!!!
I already knew about bending the knuckles before watching this but my technique was still off. This video helped a lot. I'm finally able to keep the bottom of my hand away from the strings and play some of the easier chords without muting the strings. Oh and as for your waffle, well, I enjoy it. If people can't concentrate for 6 minutes they are destined to fail at not only guitar but pretty much everything else they turn their hand too. Thanks for the helpful tuition.
I know this video is getting pretty old now, but I just want to say thank you so much for this tip. It has immediately helped an issue I've always had during my experience in trying to teach myself guitar, and it only took 6 minutes. Goes to show that there's benefits to being taught guitar as opposed to jumping into the deep end with no paddle, haha. Thanks.
The main issue for some people here is that they can’t actually play the c chord because of the size of the finger tips. This is most likely the reason why you cannot get the sound perfect. Unfortunately some people have really short fingers, some have the best for playing guitar and others just have long chubby finger tips that clog the other strings in the way. I have that problem, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. 😄
One of my fore masters used to have morbid obessity and still was able to play advanced repertoire pieces. It most likely has to be the angle of your left hand the issue. Although I also reckon that it is true that some people have a better body for playing (arms, fingers, proportion, elasticity, rotation, etc...) everyone still is able to play basic open chords.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m a newbie that was making progress but I couldn’t stop muting the screen to the point I was getting discouraged. This video fixed the problem and I’m able to move on.

I am now after my first 5 minutes trying guitar :) For everybody (like me) thinking, that it cannot be done: 1. cut your nails 2. do not press string too hard 3. try each finger alone 4. you will see, that with one finger it can be done 5. If we can do it with each one finger, we can do it with all ..after hours of practice :-) Stay positive, music is pleassure :)
i was getting so frustrated because I know i could play C before but i fat-fingered every string and wanted to destroy my guitar. Cut my nails and did it first try. Came to the comments expecting that to be the first comment and it was lmfao.
Sooooooooo, I found the problem for me, I was pressing the cord down as absolutely soft as I could so my finger was just barely touching the string, turns out I had to press down much harder for it to sound like a note and not blunt.
This helps so much!! I also realized that my wrists hurt from putting so much pressure on them from trying to press down on the frets. Now that the pressure is on my knuckles it helps so much. Thanks for this tip!
I just today wanted to learn to play a song on the guitar and I was getting frustrated because some of the strings weren't making a sound but this video changed that within 10 seconds
If you still can't get it, try, as you're putting your hand on the neck, to make an okay sign 👌 and then put your hand on the neck, and keeping your thumb in that position as you're playing. Keep your thumb in the middle of the neck perpendicular. Make sure you're arching your fingers. Did leaps and bounds for me.
//: im trying to play chords like g and cm and i cant curl my knuckle. I dont think my fingers are long enough or something. when I curl my knuckle of my ring ringer for example, I cant keep all of the other fingers in place. I'm going through to check the cord, and when I curl my knuckle to fix the muted sound of the string next to it, then I'm not pressing the string hard enough. Then when I press the string harder, my finger just presses against the string next to it. Feeling incredibly frustrated :(
YaBoiEvan try new strings. I realized my problem is that my strings are not meant for a beginner they’re meant for someone who is more experienced and also the strings are better for like hard rock and metal. It would be better to get thinner strings that are super sensitive

I'm having a problem with d major - it sounds really bad, all I can hear when I strum is the d string. I know you aren't supposed to strum strings five and six , but that's the only way I get any sound out?
Had my electic guitar for well over a year. Only 2 weeks ago I noticed an issue with the bar chords whenever I try to play an F chord - completely muted no matter how hard I hit the strings. This just started happening :(
Additional issues to consider, when it comes to muting strings, is nut width, string spacing, and people with small hands with short stubby fingers. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention these.
People use those things as excuses, but I’ve got no time for that. I have to show people how to practice to get where they want to go and get as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I address all those things in other videos, but at the end of the day, they really don’t matter when practice is the thing that fixes it all
The width of the nut is the width of the nut, and the spacing of the strings is the spacing of the strings. Sounds you're trying to push all of the blame on the guitar.
I get you're explaining all this, I can't find a single video that'll tell me why when I do two string finger picking and attempt to play the chords along with it, it will sound mute or won't play right. I am picking the correct strings and correct notes. The song I did it with is hey there Delilah and when I try to play it, the muting happens when I finger pick. It gets frustrating because I don't have anyone in person to actually tell my why I'm doing it wrong.
I was holding the guitar neck too close to my body and was muting strings with my finger tips, also the advice on leaving room between my palm and the neck was very sage (haha) advice helped a lot. Also finger stretches make a difference
