Can anyone explain the meaning of the acting? I was totally confused. He probably represents Jesus because of his pierced hands but what was he acting out?
The underlying story is about two brothers, the wife has an affair with her brother-in-law, the husbands commits suicide, and there is a police investigation. - The plot has no obvious connection with the libretto of the Messiah. Yet, this confusing discrepancy between acting/dancing and singing/music makes you listen in a different way, and you hear things that you would not hear in a regular "concert" performance. Amazing performance for the singers. I have also seen it life in Vienna, and it was outstanding. Also, "The Messiah" is quite often to be found on concert programs all over the world. - Here it is "again", and yet, this is the Messiah as you have never seen or heard it before ....
Ludwig van Beethoven Typical of modern designers and directors, who feel the need to make the great classics supposedly relevant to the times. Actually they are timeless and don't need this nonsense.
Why is a singer smoking? Weird. And the stage setting is unnecessary…this is an oratorio not an opera….also the singer although good is not in sink with the orchestra. Dragging behind, clipping and taking breaths in the middle of a ohrase
This MUST be a European production! American opera companies would not allow smoking of any kind on stage.
This is fantastic ❤
I saw this live at Theater an der Wien in Vienna. One of the most wonderful musical and theatrical impressions of my life.
+nina1608 Breathtaking and utterly captivating staging.
@@classics39 just one word: amazing
@@lucybuonasera8862 Thank you, for bringing this to my attention again...
@@lucybuonasera8862 you may want to search on youtube " Haendel Why do the Nations Florian Boesch" a clip from the same production.
@@classics39 I saw the whole oratorium on RUclips, a masterpiece and Florian Boesch is amazing
Interesting concept behind this staging.Basso has a great voice.
He is wonderful, amazing...
not sure what I think of the visual performance... but some of the best vocals i have ever heard for this piece.
He is amazing
Same here I didn’t understand the visual performance
Smoking cigarettes is NOT what you want to do when you have a great voice like this.
DFD would disagree
It's a fake cig probably.
I agree but It look likes a small puff
@@TenoreMr no he really smokes, I saw him in Luzern
Superb. The basso may not have as much lung capacity as some, but the beauty of his voice and the dramatic ability are stunning.
Perhaps because he smokes.
@@postbodzapism He won't be able to sing that well anymore if he keeps it up.
I love his tone and musicality and the fact that he's acting a part - brilliant!
Perhaps his smoking does not help
he seems to be a baritone more than a bass ?
This is a fantastic performance!!!! Brilliant!
Speachless
Que magnífica producción, y maravillosa interpretación de Florian Boesch... sus gestos, todo... aplausos

Love the vocal quality and making this production reachable to the common (wo)man.
Barbara Leger And alienating everyone else
Goosebumps. Brilliant in every aspect.
Amazing - opera, ballet, and well performed music - triple media - powerful.
Really like this staging, so pertinent to today.
Interesting presentation... beautiful voice!

same puzzle for me. I don't get it either
The guy is a friend who committed suicide, and throughout the opera the Bass character is trying to cope with it.

What's with the unfitting stage set? Looks horrific with this lovely and wonderful music.

i know!
A performance musical é linda, mas ele fumando acho incompatível pelo repertório está cantando, não é ópera ,e oratório (peça religiosa)
Fantástico !!!! , pero como siempre la puesta en escena una solemne tontería .
