Thanks for the great explanation. I did a silver stain once on a 12% bis-tris gel, and then stored the gel in water. The gel swelled up to twice the size of the original gel. This never happens with a colloidal blue stained gel. Do you know why it swelled up after silver stain? Thanks.

Maybe there's a higher concentration of silver inside the gel than concentration with coomassie?
