  • Is Air fryer useful if you already have a convection oven or OTG oven? In this video, I do a demo of comparing a Samsung Convection Oven vs a Philips Air Fryer using the same McCain Smiley product. Do I still stand by my statement from 2 years ago that Air Fryer is not required??

Cannot thank you enough for saving us money. My family wanted to buy an air fryer while we had a convection microwave oven in the kitchen for almost a decade.

Those older ovens are not same, I have a few years old samsung oven, but it doesn't have this slim fry feature, so it takes at least 30 minutes to cook some chicken that gets perfectly fried in just 10-12 minutes without any preheating in a smaller air fryer. If the chicken comes straight from the freezer, then 2 more minutes that's it. But I hate that most air fryers on the market have a non-stick coating that easily wears off and a plastic body that may release toxic chemicals.

My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first ruclips.net/user/postUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

Very right in this analysis. Thank you. Though I have seen your later video on comparing different air fryer models in India, where you admit that in the meantime you have changed your thinking about air fryers towards being more positive.
I have had convection microwave oven for many years and when children wanted me to get an air fryer, I had resisted on very similar grounds. But one fine day I got a Philips air fryer as a surprise birthday gift from the children who somehow thought that is the only way to get mummy to lose weight🙄
So I have been using this air fryer since last 5 years. All points noted by Soumya regarding space on the counter and quantity, time, oil are true. I don’t even like the shape of the Philips air fryer as I prefer linear gadgets.
Since it is just two of us air fryer does help in cooking relatively oil free dishes faster for me. About half the time taken in the convection oven. Especially for grilling. The texture of dishes like grilled chicken or veggie cutlets are nice, uniformly crispy. Plus I don’t bother with the preheating hassle. But I think it also consumes more power in that short time.
Soumya hasn’t talked about cleaning. The air fryer basket needs to be cleaned almost every time I use, even if I line the inner basket with foil. With the oven it would be the trays and pans...
And the noise. The air fryer makes louder noise than the oven. So what with noise if the chimney and the air fryer and if I am baking at the same time in the oven....kitchen gets me to be silent while cooking ....or yelling at the top of my voice.😐
So go for it with your eyes open, if you don’t mind these. I have learnt to live with it. I have been seeing that the newer models of air fryers are built better, look better and are available in bigger sizes. Will I trade the old one for a new model?
Well, I probably will “make” the kids gift a nicer one again, but only if they make less noise. Not on my money though😀

If you have used rack for convection cooking, result may be same. Less time and more crispy.

Also, the biggest drawback in an air fryer is the Teflon coating. Even if there are options of stainless steel basket, the inside of the fryer is usually Teflon coated

Cooking time: A microwave oven can heat or reheat food much faster than an air fryer, as it uses electromagnetic waves to directly heat the food particles. An air fryer, on the other hand, uses hot air circulation to cook the food, which takes longer but produces a crispier and more even result.
Cooking quality: A microwave oven can cook food evenly and retain moisture, but it may not produce the desired browning or crispiness that some dishes require. An air fryer can make food crispy and crunchy, as it mimics the effect of deep-frying with less oil. However, an air fryer may dry out some foods or make them tough if overcooked.
Cooking versatility: A microwave oven can perform various functions, such as heating, reheating, defrosting, baking, and grilling, depending on the model and features. A microwave oven can also cook a wide range of foods, from soups and stews to cakes and pizzas. An air fryer can also perform multiple functions, such as frying, baking, roasting, and grilling, but it is mainly designed for making fried foods, such as French fries, chicken nuggets, and onion rings. An air fryer can also cook some foods that a microwave oven cannot, such as breaded or battered foods.
Health benefits: A microwave oven can preserve the nutrients and vitamins in food, as it does not require much water or oil to cook. However, some people may be concerned about the safety of microwave radiation and the possible effects on food quality. An air fryer can reduce the fat and calorie content of food, as it uses hot air instead of oil to fry. However, some people may be worried about the high temperatures and the possible formation of harmful compounds, such as acrylamide, in fried foods.
Space and energy efficiency: A microwave oven can take up more space on your countertop or kitchen cabinet, as it is usually larger and heavier than an air fryer. A microwave oven can also consume more electricity, as it has a higher wattage and power output. An air fryer can save space and energy, as it is smaller and lighter than a microwave oven. An air fryer can also use less electricity, as it has a lower wattage and power output.

You need a crisper plate if you have an oven. In the video she didn't get the same crispness as air fryer cause she used a normal plate. A crisper is a special mesh plate designed for top to bottom circulation. The same crispness is 100% possible in an oven as well. Just needs the mesh plate/rack.

Kind of disagree, there is a considerable difference in crispiness and browning effect when using convection mode of microwave vs air fryer.
Air fryer is able to handle paneer tikka and potato wedges way better in a shorter span of time.

But then the air fryer also makes smaller quantities per batch.
Also about the quality, the ovens with slim fry option have almost similar effect as air fryer. Convection mode is not as close. But slim fry is.
