Lupus anticoagulant is a blood test that checks for the presence of antibodies formed against the body's own cells. These antibodies specifically target phospholipids and the cell wall, the outer layer of cells. They interfere with the normal blood clotting process, causing abnormal blood clots to form.
LAC increases the risk of a blood clot in an intact artery or vein, leading to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which most commonly affects the veins in the legs. These blood clots can block blood vessels, leading to heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or stroke. They are also known to cause recurrent miscarriages. They can block the vessels of the umbilical cord, which can affect the growth of the baby in the womb.
The LAC test may be done to diagnose the following:
Excessive clots in a common artery or vein
If a woman has had frequent miscarriages
If a person has had a heart attack or stroke
If a person has a prolonged partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
The LAC test is done if a person has symptoms of DVT, which include:
Leg pain, tenderness in the affected leg
Severe pain in the affected area
Swelling in the affected leg
Warmth at the site of the clot
Discoloration of the affected leg
The LAC test is done if symptoms of pulmonary embolism are suspected, which include:
Sudden shortness of breath or fainting
Cough
Hepthlessness (bleeding in the mucus)
Chest pain
Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
Sudden loss of consciousness
The LAC test is also done along with other tests such as cardiolipin antibodies and anti-beta-2-glycoprotein I, which are These tests are done to diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome. It is also done along with Factor V Leiden, Antithrombin, Protein C test and Protein S test which are done to test for thrombophilia.
