Having really heard no Johnny Paycheck except "Take This Job and Shove It”, I had to go check the original of this song out. I like it. The theme and lighter tone kinda remind me of Merle Haggards "Mama Tried". But, point of personal preference, this Hank 3 version with it's much darker tone, seems more appropriate to the story line. Have been a fan of Hank 3 since I picked "Lovesick, Broke, And Driftin'" out of the used CD bin 8 (?) years ago.
A previous poster talking about Hank 3 said the family talent shows through. Having heard all 3 Hanks, sorry guy, I think the Williams family kinda proves the old saw, 'talent skips a generation" I really like Hank senior, don't much care for Jr, and enjoy 3 the most. He does seem to channel his grandpa, but it is a little more modern sounding, instrumentation wise.. I might be old, but not old enough to have heard Hank Sr in his day. Hank 3's band's sound is more familiar to my 65 year (how tf did this happen to me, lol) old ears.
First time I ever heard him heard sing. He can sing alot like his grandpa. I do love to here him sing. I can see his grand pa in him alot also. I love that old country also. He is Great.
I find this version of the song pretty interesting I really like both of the versions I especially think the direction of having slower makes it seem different in a good way that only Hank III could pull off I feel
my son is my only son...and he is the only hell i raise..but,i allways stand by his side...this song,i believe was written for all the mothers out there who knows what im going throu....LOL..
I'm sure Johnny paycheck would be Honered to know that Hank Sr's Grandboy did a remake of one of one of his best songs
Agreed

Certainaly by far the best, Hank 3 has something that hank senior had in him. Love Hank 3's Style, he certainly keeping real country alive and well.

Come back Shelton, you’re the last hope for country music !!!
this is by far my favorite cover by Hank III. something so dark and bluesy about this song.
Damn! thats some strong coke or speed he's on for this show. It even makes the song more dark and tense as was originally wiritten
That was a badass show! 14 years later, still remember it. Hope he tours again and makes it back to good ole North Cackalacky!!

I like Johnny's version a lot. But... the slower, darker, tone here feels more appropriate to the lyrical content

Im catching a "time out of mind" vibe with this one..p.s. dont think i cant "hear" that good ol throat singing..
Let play Hank3
Sometimes I wish people be honest about what's honing on.
Not no he'll that I see, but I don't know maybe I'm blind.
All I see is a Williams.
No, his aim is not to "be better than the original". His aim is to honor one of his other Grandpappies
In bed as it soundz..
Hank sr went to hell and came back as Hank 3rd.. only way way I can explain 3rds music now
I like Hank lll , but he sure FUCKED up this song!
The comments by other viewers of this video would indicate that you're in the small minority, but you are obviously entitled to your opinion.
