The conflict is essentially one of homeland. British Mandate Palestine promised Israel to both the Arabs and the Jews if they agreed to fight against the Ottoman Turks during World War I. Israel's subsequent war of Independence created a refugee crisis that is still ongoing to this day.

You disregard a lot of key points
1) the Arab brotherhood, the precursor to hamas, were basically far right nationalists, like Trump. And Palestinians to this day are using their flag
2) arbitrarily starting in 1516 is problematic as Palestine itself is a story of colonization and genocide during the Arab conquests. You can’t not take into account their history of stealing land because that’s important context here to see both sides
the mere existence of a Jewish nation is referred to as a "catastrophe"... anything about that rhetoric a little concerning? nevermind even more damning occurrences like the 3 R's Agreement or choosing a religious holiday as an invasion date
@@turdferguson9356Palestine winning means Jews cease to exist. Israel winning means Palestinians continue to exist, just without a home. There is a clear morally worse more evil player in this “game”
Silly question: Do you clients ever recognise you from your videos?
I'm really disappointed of this video, you are deforming the historical events and you are apologetic for ethnic cleansing, that's normal for a fully indoctrinated by American Emperialism. No comment.
It really amazes me, when someone digs into conflicts across the globe, usually history starts with: "so, the british came.."
All our fault apparently, but then the USA never admits their own war crimes? Big bad Brits as usual, no mention of ethnic or religious tensions. By way nearly 80 years so where do we draw the line - can I sue the Normans for invading in 1066? How about having a go at the Danes or the early Italians? As for the Germanic Anglo-Saxon tribes, well lets sue Germany.
Well, it's kind of a given when they colonized half of the world to be fair.
Then dig a bit deeper and find the East India Company or one of the similar that was looting the world in the name of England whilst blackmailing the english government of the time.
In ancient times, the land is first named Israel, invaders came from greece called philistines, they expelled the Israelites, the land they settled in was called philistia, and then it was renamed to Palestine, no matter what name they call it, it is still Israel.
By the way the ancient philistines are not related to the arabs who call themselves palestians, the reason they call themselves palestians is because they are the original arab refugees or nomads who settled and lived in Palestine and of course, even if a Chinese settle in Palestine and live there he will now be a palestinian citizen. I hope you understand.
If there's any place on Earth where the phrase, "and the plot thickens", is appropriate, it's the Israeli -Palestinian border.
There are like 100 more complicated conflicts it’s just no one cares about them

Everyone tiptoes around this conflict. For years and years I had no idea about the specifics. I just knew it was a sensitive subject. Most people just say, "It's complex." That was usually enough to discourage me from placing any effort into learning about it. Thank you for a clear and concise summary.
If you actually want to deep dive into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Martyrmade has a wicked podcast series called Fear and Loathing in New Jerusalem
Its amazing how over the years we became accustomed to taking sides when we see a conflict but for this one there's no right side, just a mess we need to think about very carefully before we get involved for whatever motivation. We cant even say most of the civilians are innocents. Most Israelis are of have been in the IDF bar the children and vote for the Israeli govts, Palestinians voted for Hamas and their children are brainwashed in their schools to kill Israelis and take willing part in attacks against such.
why didn't you just read about it?
I wonder if ‘it’s complex’ was another way of saying ‘yeah, I don’t know enough to explain it either’ 🤔
@@DeadDancers either that or the truth in history contradicts what they want to try and use to argue with.
This is the only time I’ve seen the Israel/Palestine situation explained briefly and in a way that I can understand both sides.
Lesson learned: it’s always the Brit’s fault lol
I say Germanys fault.
the most dangerous predator in the dessert is a Tommy
Ultimately it's the Ottomans fault, just like the complete disaster in the Balkans. They expanded their empire and oppressed and genocide-d everyone, and when it unraveled it left everything in chaos. If the Ottoman Empire didn't exist and didn't help Germany, Britain wouldn't have needed to open up the Sinai front and make bad promises
@@TheJaseface Could you explain this a little more?
@@icefox5347 Presumably, they mean that it's Germany's fault because Germany started WWI. Of course, anyone with more than a superficial understanding of that period of European history will know that's a gross simplification, but I suppose it's no more reductionist than saying that the Israel-Palestine problem is _all_ down to the duplicitous Brits.

Your point about historical tribal conflicts over territory reminds me of a conversation I once had with a colleague (of Mexican descent) about the Arab-Israeli conflict. I remarked that nobody calls the American Southwest “the occupied territories.” He promptly replied: “I do!” 😂

Shrugging your shoulders at the mass explusion of natives from their homelands isn't particularly the best take to make.
Be it first nationals, africans, arabs, or asians.
You dont get the shrug at the history of genocide committed by colonizing nations because it all lead to the nice life Americans live now.
That was mostly fair, but the implication that I should take my own existence into consideration when judging past events is a bit strange. You didn't make this argument, but if someone were to argue that I should not judge a genocide as bad, because I won't otherwise exist. I'd tell them that my existence can in no way excuse or mitigate any bad. And this is not theoretical to me. I'm a descendent of a holocaust survivor. They survived and then had a child with a non-Jew that aided them. If not for the holocaust, I would not exist. But if by some weird supernatural means I could make it so the Holocaust never happend, I would; in an instance, thereby precluding my own existence. My mere existence does not change my perspective on what is right and wrong and I posit that anyone doing otherwise has their moral compass out of whack.
Well said
That bit threw me off too. Hopefully it was more of an "I'm in a rush, and didn't think this argument through" rather than a sign of his true feelings on Might Makes Right.
It’s actually concerning he would say that because why doesn’t he say the same about Russians, Russias grandparents owned Ukraine so they should be allowed to transgress on them. since apparently Israel has claim to Palestine because Israel existed there almost a thousand years ago. It’s ridiculous, like Italy taking Istanbul because it was theirs hundreds of years ago.
This rhetoric opens many nasty cans of worms simultaneously. Turkey could have claims all the way up to Hungary, speaking of which, Austro-Hungarian empire could have claims elsewhere, and Italy could lay claims to everything Rome ever owned.... And don't get me started on the Mongols.
Things change. My hope is that eventually the spiritual foundation of the United Nations will live up to its name universally across the globe, and all nations will be truly united in the sanctity of every human life, and that every living being will agree to this message and live by it in peace, respect while not sacrificing cultural diversity and traditions.
@@bigtroglodyte I actually interpreted it the opposite way. That it could be said "You don't get to complain about people taking land because they're strong because you also benefit from land taken from people by a stronger people".
I'm sure that's not Ryan's opinion on the matter. Or maybe it is. I don't want to put words in his mouth.
Ryan, please don’t forget about the Skyes-picot agreement. The Brit’s never intended to honour any of those agreements and knew they were lying from the start

I used to hope we could have peace. After the last few days it is no more. I'm an israeli, and I think this was a pretty good and fair background, at least given the restricted timeframe. Regarding the current situation, the terrorists have also taken civilian hostages and kidnapped families (including women and children) and had taken them to Gaza. War is not new to us, but this is of a scale last seen in 1973, and it might be the first time civilians have been kidnapped. However this is going to go and going to end (hopefully quickly, but to be honest- I'll be surprised if that's the case), nothing will stay the way it was before. I have spent entire summers in the bomb shelter, but this is worse than I ever imagined possible.

The modern proposal for a two-state solution has been proposed as the borders of 1967. But I guess that means Israel will have to give up much of their illegally STOLEN lebensraum on Palestinian land.

Man, the British really complicated things for the rest of us didn't they? (Middle East, India/Pakistan... What else?)
The British "complications" also caused indirectly the wars which helped humanity develop many technologies during those wars.
So yes, maybe bad, but also good things came from it.
It would be easier to list places/conflicts that weren't complicated by the British Empire.

The only actual fact I'd like to add is that a state of Palestine could have come into existence in Gaza and the West Bank in 1949, if Egypt and Jordan had allowed (they were holding the land).
Funny how you see Egypt and Jordan wrong to remain control of the land for several years but not Israel colonising and oppressing the land and people of Palestine.

Well he did leave out the part about Israel administering an apartheid and the majority of palistineans being expelled or killed. Little bit more to their grievance than believing they were handed a raw deal.
he kinda forgot to mention that the 1947 partition plan would have given Israel 60% of the Region even tho only 30% of the population was Jewish
What is unfair is how he describes Israel as a country that struggles to exist, although I would say the same can be said about the Palestinians. Palestinians struggle with having Palestine recognized as a real country, and in practise their land is treated as Israel's backyard that they can freely demolish and expand into any day of the week.
Jerry, You left out the part where Israeli Arabs serve in all aspects of society; The Druze community is also highly represented in Israel’s government, serving as Knesset members, diplomats and IDF officials. @@jerryhampton5755

Appreciate the analysis and information.
Thank you this helped a lot. A lot of current news about what’s happening assumes an underlying awareness that I just didn’t have.
Really good and really fair breakdown, actually. Personally, I find both "sides" to be simultaneously varying degrees of sympathetic and abhorrent. As is often the case in war, it's very rarely a clear case of "good guys versus bad guys," just bad guys versus worse guys and the piles of innocent dead bodies left in the wake of the violence and chaos on both sides. What a lot of people don't understand is that this is basically an old blood feud, very Hatfields versus McCoys or Bloods versus Crips. You kill some ours, we're gonna kill more of yours, and the cycle of violence goes ever onward. It's very ancient and barbaric thinking that civilization has tried to mitigate and transcend for thousands of years through spiritual and moral development, but unfortunately, human nature is what it is no matter how much we try to rise above our base impulses, so it'll always be there lingering within human subconscious, just waiting for an opportunity to express itself. There's not much we can do to stop it short of offering to help facilitate some kind of peace for however long it lasts. The only alternative is directly intervening, and that's just gonna make everything worse and cause it to escalate beyond everyone's control. At the end of the day, I think we're seeing a lot of people's moral franework revealing itself when they use examples of bad things one side does to justify the response. Regardless of which "side" you believe is more or less guilty of wrongdoing, we have to remembee that someone else's sins do not justify your own.
❤
Thank you I value this type of thinking be safe bud
It's unhelpfully pessimistic to reduce this behavior to "human nature." This is one example in a world where diplomacy has shown remarkable results, one example that's easy to blow out of proportion and is - as far as I'm aware - an extraordinary circumstance.
Peace is not an evitably hopeless venture just as life itself, in its limits, is not.
It's really not. Jews have no blood feud with thr Arabs. It's about the ummah and the idea of non-Muslims ruling land deemed to be Muslim.
That and the Arab mentality which is honor and not reality-based.
Thank you for another very easy-to-understand primer and even handed explanation. I have always dismayed how the UK has never been a more active partner in trying to solve a problem they essentially created. ( and yes, I'm firmly aware of the geo-pol nuances of a 70+ yr modern problem, let alone ancient conflicts) 😔
We can barely sort our own problems out in the UK. Trying to sort out a problem cretated decades ago is definitely out of what our government can solve
Ah, yes... Great Britain; exporting Glory and Problems to the world at large!
Not enough of the former and too much of the latter...
The UK didn’t really start the problem.
For starters Zionism was not created by the British government.
Secondly, the British had a mandate from the League of Nations.
Thirdly, the Arabs didn’t accept a 2 state system.
Fourthly, it’s not Britains fault Israel proclaimed independence in 1948.
Fifthly it’s not Britains fault 5 Arab countries declared war on Israel and lost
@@davidshepherd8917 They kinda did; by occupying the region and offering the same land to two different factions.
@@kazekamiha You know who else occupied the region? The Ottoman Empire and countless other empires before them.
The British had mandate from the League of Nations, this was something many countries wanted, not just the British.
The British offered a 2 state system with international governance of Jerusalem, Israel accepted. Palestine refused.
Jerusalem then became independent, unless you’re advocating for the British to continue ‘owning colonies’ then this isn’t a bad thing.
5 arabs countries declaring war on Jerusalem immediately after it became immediately isnt the British fault

Have you updated your video to mention the ongoing slaughter?
I’m learning a lot today about this issue. One question I have is with regards to referring to Palestinians as refugees. If this land was Palestine before the British/French/Russians split up the Ottoman Empire, aren’t they actually refugees on the own homeland?
The land was Israel before the Roman Emperor Hadrian forcefully exiled the Israelites, creating a vacuum for the Muslim faith, and establishing a Roman province called “Palestina”. Hence, the Crusades were military operations primarily by Christians to “regain” the holy land from the Muslims. Jerusalem is the Holy capital of the Land of Israel and predates “Palestine” which in itself should be enough to recognize the area as Israel especially since “Palestine” is not technically even a sovereign nation under international law
They're still refugees if they were displaced from their original homes. Hurricane Katrina created a lot of refugees for example even though they all are Americans
What was the land called before it was Palestinian?

The only comparisons I can think of are serial killers or any other people that get a kick out of watching people suffer. But there’s an army of those animals.
I didn’t feel this way until I saw all of the footage, especially the footage that the Palestinians released. Parading a naked, bloody civilian woman around like a trophy, and then proceeding to beat her even more. Desecrating corpses of women, children, and the elderly. Calling them terrorists gives them too much respect. If they were really fighting for freedom, then they wouldn’t be fighting like this. I used to be very neutral on the Palestine-Israel situation, and I hoped for a two-state solution ideally. But now Palestine shouldn’t be given sympathy.
@@Jake-bt3fcAs if Israel isnt responsible for slaughtering palestinians on a daily basis and getting zero coverage on western meia
Great video. Well done. Thanks.
Great Summary!
From my time out that way used to know people from many groups, guess it's one of those dilemmas were there is no answer on how to sort out this mess. Although the response is going to mean even more pain and suffering in what will be left of Gaza. Just brings me sorrow seeing whats happening for everyone out there.
If there were only defensive violence then there would be no violence. Both sides should stop killing.
Praying for peace, as this will end poorly for everyone.
no peace until the hamas has paid the price of its action
@@masonhidari while Hamas' motto for this action is probably "No peace until Izrael pays the price of their previous action"
Praying for a peaceful resolution with the other arab states once Israel takes all of the territory and sends the murderers packing.
Many civilians will die, as usual in this conflict
@@masonhidariit's almost certain those hostages will become victims of a "crossfire"
Awesome summary...thanks!
Bro forgot like half the conflict
The 7 Pillars of Wisdom is quite a good book regarding how England pulled off this capture.
Wow! I thought no way you can cover it all in 5 minutes but you did a great job. Not just the historical but the social and tribal aspects. Thanks for your hard work Ryan. I've come to depend on you for accurate reporting in these weird times.
Thank you for keeping video shirt. There is so many opinions which stretches over half an hour long.
Great video!
One issue with this video is that you never explained why the UN treaty of 1948 was rejected by the Arabs
If you do make a follow-up, please add that info too.
He spent less than ten seconds on the British mandate, you could say there's issues, definitely.
Your ability to objectively explain the situation in just five minutes is truly remarkable well done. Spending over a year close to the Gaza Strip (50m) as a member of the multinational peace force, I understand some of the many complexities and sensitivities that often shroud discussions concerning this region.
My fluency in Hebrew, as well as my comprehension of Arabic, coupled with my unique childhood experiences spent with my hippie parents in a settlement in the West Bank where Jews, Christians, and Muslims harmoniously coexisted, literally singing kumbaya together around the bonfire, allows me to appreciate the insights you've shared deeply.
P.S. Egyptian Arabic stands is the best dialect. Thank you for providing a refreshing and well-informed perspective on the matter.
"objectively"
nothing objective about saying genocide is ok.
@@skyisreallyhigh3333When did anyone say genocide was good?
@@2Cats_ina_Trenchcoathe didn’t say it was good, he said he understood why it was happening, therefore it is ok, in his opinion.
@@TubaTones So you're saying because YOU inferred his acceptance of genocide based on an objective statement, that he must feel this way? Bit of a reach isn't it?
@@skyisreallyhigh3333 Hamas literally attacked a peace festival, I don't think hippies like Hamas lmao.
Thanks Ryan for saying it as it is ,it's a shame you have to include the " educational disclaimer " to appease RUclips but there you go,it is that simple ,5 minutes says it all without being biased, thank you again for what you do and what you stand for
Super summary Ryan thank you
Thank you for the brief history lesson that covered the origins of this serious conflict. I’m very suprised nobody has summarised this for me before.
Nobody wanted anybody to know. Now somebody wants everybody to know. The spark that ignites the powder keg?
