  • An in-depth explainer review of one of the most controversial bowling balls ever made - Purple Hammer Urethane.
I'll talk about the rule changes, why this change was necessary and a little bit of the backstory as I throw it out of box and compare it to my green pin version.
For anyone reading this (who doesn't bowl on the PBA National Tour), your green pin Purple Hammer is 100% LEGAL to use in USBC and PBA Regional competition. The only exception were for those original batches with the serial number starting with the number 6 or 7.
If you learned anything new about urethane, consider subscribing to the channel. Appreciate it!

I bowl in three weekly Senior leagues in Tennessee.
Because I'm a Lefty and my low ball speed, I have had success with a Storm Pitch Black - so I went to you for some advice about Urethane. You delivered again! Not just an excellent ball review, but great information about the HPU reaction and how to play it!
Now I have added the Hammer Purple Hammer to my bag. Love it!

At 11:48, NOW THAT'S THE TICKET! You are having a good day when you see em fall just like that. I used to bowl like this decades ago with a rubber ball, no drilled pins/ plugs or counter weights or any of that fancy stuff. I just ordered this ball for 2024(today,3/4/24), haven't bowled in some time and I'm a senior. This will be my first urethane ever and I'm very excited! Plus, I'm gonna get some lessons from a certified Pro..so we'll see what happens. I don't know what to expect going from unaltered rubber to this? I'm not used to having my body in the middle of the lanes, where your foot ends. I used to use the 2nd arrow(righty), my hook seemed to be way late and very powerful when my shot was on target., but honestly I never really left that many 10's. I always thought that when the 10 don't come down, then that means the shot is ever so slightly on the HIGH SIDE. Do you agree with that? Do you have any other thoughts or tips you can give me? Thanks for your time.

So do you have to move alot throughout a night of league. I bowl on a five man team on a 40ft 9:1 ratio pattern. The oil is sitting at about 7 to 7 on the lanes. Trying to find a ball i dont have to move alot. You and i throw similar speed and revs.

Brunsnick what’s your best set with the purple hammer, and how do you compare it to the Double Cross since it’s the same cover

    • @brunsnick
      @brunsnick  Год назад +5

I think 760 or 770ish at the House of Pain. I had a streak of about 10-12 700s in a row with it.
I had the Double Cross earlier, with less on the back. I had issues with it because it flared some so I drilled a 2nd to kill the flare. Kind of the same issue, just couldn’t get it to shape the same way to fit my eye.
The Purple specs are very unique.

@@brunsnick I only usually bowl 3 games a week. With the purple, I average about 205, One tie I went and practiced, and shot 798 with it. Then, I decided to try an asymmetrical solid, atlas. Well, I tried it for 2 weeks. The atlas seems to carry better but I seem to really have to throw it faster and try to fit it down lane. I am going back to my purple. It just makes things simpler and easier. I will drill that purple in the pocket like crazy and wait until I carry like crazy. When I put that purple on the rack, everyone comments about it and how I drill the pocket with it. Its like this mystical ball. LoL

To me the green pin is earlier and I have it with a strong layout but is also controllable. But when I completely miss it at the bottom it won't recover as much when I miss by a little bit it will recover but always nasty splits left behind . But from what I am seeing the light purple pin urethane is a little longer down lane not by much maybe a couple of inches and it has more for the backend.

*UPDATE - May 2024:* I've had my Purple Hammer (Purple Pin) for a year this week. Never had a Purple Hammer before this one, so I just figured it would be like most balls I've had. I was _SO_ wrong. It took a bout of elbow tendonitis for me to figure out how to throw this ball, and I've never looked back. It's not hype if it's true. This ball is truly different. For about five months, I rolled this ball in three different leagues in three different centers. Beautiful things were happening...next stop, Black Pearl Urethane and getting ready for this year's Nationals.

Great vid, Nick! A few questions, please:
    1. Yes, urethane keeps you in play, but would you stay in it if you kept leaving corners, while folks using resin were carrying?
    2. I noticed that one of your finger holes has an insert, while the other is dropped back and has white tape. Is there a reason for the dropped finger and only one insert?
    3. Are the layouts the same for both? The green pin Hammer had one of the finger holes in middle of the "urethane" circle logo, while the newer one did not.
    4. Would you recommend this ball for lefties as well?

    • @brunsnick

      1. Depends on the tournament format, but if I’m going with urethane out of the gate, I’m committing until I can determine the scoring pace.
      2. Sarge Easter Grip - Bowling's Most Bizarre Grip | BrunsNick
      ruclips.net/video/Ax8H7MisJms/видео.html
      3. Layouts are the same. The difference is the pin to CG distance out of the box.

@@brunsnick Thanks....and I'm guessing it's trial and error to determine how much surface does a high tilt lefty need on a pearlized urethane to get it to slow down enough to properly read the lane, versus not enough surface. It's almost like battling opposites: urethane tends to hook in the heads, but tilt pushes almost any ball down lane, plus, the Purple is a pearl coverstock, which makes it even easier to get down lane. And yet, you don't want tilt to cause over/under.....

Yes it is. Hand injury long time ago, this alleviated all of those problems. Went back to fingertip for a few years, had more issues with ingrown nails, blisters, tendons again. Switched back in 2014 and never looked back.

I was going to ask which ball was it being compared to, and good to see that it is the Reynosa pour of the Purple Hammer, not the last release from Hopkinsville, which I believe the 2018/2019 lines were still there and legal. It would be interesting to see a 3-way compare with those, and possibly a 4-way, 5-way, or 6-way compare with the Purple Pin, Green Pin, Hopkinsville pour, Black Widow Purple Pearl Urethane (Reynosa), Black Widow Purple Pearl Urethane (Hopkinsville), and Black Widow Pink Pearl Urethane.
I went with the BW Purple Pearl Urethane from Hopkinsville, and it has been one of the best balls in my bag.. and if it holds up, it will be in my bag for as long as my Faball Blue Hammer has been in my bag.

The Purple is unique with the core specs and cover. There really is no comparison, and I have had both. Been a few years since that was out.

I've had success with both. In fact I have a 16lb TM new in the box on my shelf. But they don't really compare. I'd have to say the TM is closer to a Pitch Black than anything else.
