    15 years is too young to be scrapped. On Maderia island, Portugal, i saw lots of 30 or more year old Volvo busses running like a dream

    If you guys think this is bad come to Columbus, Ohio. We are scrapping perfect good running buses. Instead of auctioning buses as we usually do, we are sending 2001 and 2003 New Flyers to the be shredded due to us getting federal money to help purchase them and each bus has less than 550,000mi. I know some of the supervisors, drivers and mechanics who all say they are disgusted and charter companies are ticked. This is really dumb since it will not allow small charter businesses like a charter/party bus company to grow or allow someone to come into business unless they buy a terrible school bus. All of these buses are all driven over an hour away to the scrap yard. All of them have had recent engine and transmission rebuilds as well and are kept up so well ,they are going out with no rust on the body and I have been under several which probably have another 10-12 years on the frame. We actually are sending buses to be scrapped for no reason and wasting money.

      Yeah seeing this always pisses me off. Especially when they are perfectly running.

      you get 20 or so years in dublin bus before they are sold to other companies in ireland or the uk or scrapped, 550,000miles is nothing

      andrew mockler In the U.S., 400,000 miles is considered past due. In the old days here, some buses ran for more than 20 years and over 1 million miles. Now they are killing buses at 12 years old.

    Buses sometimes suffer from hidden problems like rusted out, or cracked frame, engines, axles, suspension, transmissions wear out. Anyway they still might be worth some money either in parts, or they can be sold to places where workforce is cheaper and after repairs they may be used for next few years, so shredding working busses isn't best thing possible to do...

    13:53 That is why there are no N113s preserved. The engine (and I presume transmission) was destroyed and there are none available for spare parts, there is a preserved Leyland Olympian I know of that is owned by a friend of mine that could have probably done with the gearbox ECU off the 4HP500 but they have paid quite a bit for a replacement one. Had either of the last two double deckers that went up on EBay been bought by someone wanting to restore them they would be stuck for parts since there aren't around, which is probably why the majority of the Leyland Olympians that are preserved are Cummins since there are a lot more parts available for older Cummins, but then any 80s & 90s heritage bus gathering would just be a bunch of Cummins L10s coupled to ZF 4HP maybe with the occasional Voith D851.

    I understand this destruction if the bus has really come to the end of its life. It's just that it doesn't seem to be - many cities in east could have use of these and considering the environment, a DSC11 is almost like Euro 6 compared to old buses built in the former Soviet Union.

      rodstartube Me too. There's so many ways to utilize old buses... In fact, most of them are obsolete, but crush them is just a way to create a lot of useless garbage. Even if the parts don't worth a cent, they could be dismantled. It's easier to recycle the materials this way - and easier to clean up the mess, too.

    • @NikolaosLedZeppelin
      @NikolaosLedZeppelin 9 лет назад

      Paulo Vasconcelos No not any more. I was in the same thought to be recycled as parts but nowadays cost less to produce new part than to pay workers to dismantle the parts from a withdrawn vehicle.

    Only cities need city busses,almost no private persons would ever buy a city bus because they're not practical for private use. Too bad the old Volvo busses were also taken out of service from the city, even though they were built to last.
    I really WOULD like to convince them, but the 12-year old limit is political regulation and that is as far away from clever arguments as you can get. Since they are not a private company, they can just spend almost unlimited tax money on the newest fancy stuff
