Little late with a comment here, but this really grabbed me after not hearing it probably since the 90s. Really enjoyed it. Had some flashes of Porcupine Tree-esque stuff. Really cool overall.
This started off like a song from Counterparts, then segued into something that could have been off Victor. I don't think I had noticed what a freakishly weird solo we got on this one from Alex! Again haven't played this one in over 20 years, happy to be along for the journey.
Time and Motion is one of my favorites on this album. This and Driven. It was only played live on the Test for Echo tour. Like most of the live tracks from this album, it was never played again. Driven and Resist were the only tracks played live after the TFE tour and only maybe on the subsequent tour. I think the fact that Rush largely stayed away from playing this album live on subsequent tours demonstrates that it just didn’t catch on with them or with fans that much.
@@Katehowe3010 The band had a long hiatus after that tour, and promoting the newer albums didn’t really present space for TFE tracks, especially when their 30th anniversary came about with earlier songs being brought out.
Even on mediocre Rush albums, there are a few gems. This is a prime example. Even with the postmodernism of the lyrics, I really love them. It's strange how a song like this can co-exist on the same album as Dog Years and Virtuality. That's artists for you, I suppose.
BTW, Virtuality is my fav from this album. Though I'm an old drummer I can play guitar and this is a fun riff. Plus it came out way back when chatting online was HUGE which I did and so it brings back fond memories. (old guy here)
great rush here, i knew you like this one, great parts and transitions.this one is fire, along whit driven,we are far from hold your fire, tai shan, l.o.l, 🤘🤘🤘
Even though they’re not related at all I always think of time and motion as Double Agent part two. Both stand out as interesting dark tracks in a sea of other stuff.
In an album full of safe dull songs, this song kinda sorta resembles old rush with the heavier feel and odd time signatures. Wish they did more songs like this on T4E but at this time they were so settled into pretty stock sounding rock songs like color of right and many others.
Honestly, I’ve always loved the 1st 3 songs, but I haven’t ever heard this one before! I agree with everything you said! It kinda reminds me of RUSH “doing” TOOL… LOL! Merry Christmas and God bless… from Texas!!
I like when your intently listening to the music and moving your head forward and then at the end go: yeah It’s the most interesting song on the record so far which translates to: I don’t like it 😂🤣😂🤣😂😎😎😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm glad you like the song or at least find it very interesting. It is one of my favorites on the album. But not because of the lyrics, I don't even really care about the lyrics, they Don't really strike me in any way, but I do like the cadence of his singing and and the sound of his voice along with Alex backing him up on vocals. I love the music, the instrumentality of this song. I think it's great; big beefy guitars and those quick transitions back and forth which Rush is known for.
Love all these first five songs, and as far as the words, dude I can’t stress enough: “ITS ALL ABOUT THE LYRICS” they never played The Color of Right live and this one only made the set list on the first few nights of the tour before getting permanently dropped. I would imagine that, one it didn’t translate well live, two they witnessed the whole audience going for beer or the bathroom once it started, three they weren’t really enjoying it and four: ALL OF THE ABOVE😂🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤
How many changes and transitions can you get into one song? According to Rush, there's no limit 😅 love this, I agree it has an evilness about it, and Alex's solo is like nothing he's done before.
I still don't understand why so many people don't like dog years it's not an epic song by any means but it's not horrible! It's kind of cute if anything. My favorites on this album are driven and resist but to be honest I love the whole album! It's definitely in my top five
Personally,Dog Years was a favorite of mine for lot of years, still my top 5 to this day, simply because i was amazed of how the drum parts was created when you listen/see it.What got me more on this album was Neil's A Work In Progress DVD where he filmed every song on drums and how he reinvinted himself with Freddy. In my opinion,T4E is top 3 of neils best drumming album..not always pounding everything..just the way he incorporates and go smooth on every track and change instead the timing of his fills and beats..! Maybe for some ppl to enjoy this album more,i highly suggest to look at this doc! 😊
Stress can be chronic and low level leading to a low-level fatigue. May not be it at all...and not that I have any first hand experience with that. Nope. Not I. I doubt anyone can even relate... /s It's been a rough year. Hope the Holiday's are festive and cheerful for you and your family!
It’s interesting; this is the song that I should really like the most on the album, given my musical inclinations, and it’s one of my least favorites. It does have some very interesting things going on for it, but I just don’t think it works as a whole. Notably, this was initially part of the Test For Echo tour setlist, but it didn’t last long.
@@TheCentralScrutinizerAgain Yeah…and I find the vocal delivery annoying (not because of Ged’s voice, just because of the progression musically) on the “Spontaneous relations / And the long-enduring kind” lines.
Yeah, this is one of the best songs on the album. I usually skip The Color of Right as it’s a bit below par and I feel the weakest on the album. I actually like most of the songs coming up.
This sounds the most Rush Like song on the album. I like Alex's sinister chording at the break but I absolutely agree with you, the musical switch ups were kind of all over the place for me. Almost like they just stitched together a bunch of jam segments, which typically, Rush do very well. Not sure about the way they employed it in this instance. I'd skip the rest of the album personally.
Rush stuck with playing Driven live through the years, and while it is a good song, I've always preferred Time And Motion and wish they had played that through the years.
Surprised that we're 40 minutes since posting and 14 comments in and no one has mentioned the homage to Cygnus X-1. We are going to see some more self-quotations over the next few albums ("Subdivisions" and "Hemispheres" most notably).
Bad, dark evil opinion….. after hearing this album…. The reason for the hiatus is terrible, horrible, tragic and no one should have to endure what Neil went through…… But I am so glad they took time off, reflected, rejuvenated, then came back to make the best stuff they ever made. This album made me feel they were losing direction or something. Especially after Counterparts which was a massive shift in focus. But Rush is Rush. They do what they want. Express what they want when they want to. Props and respect. But I never revisit this album.🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭😭😭😭
A lot of interesting individual ideas and sections in this one, but I don't think it quite hangs together as a song. The feel reminds me of Camera Eye and Witch Hunt at times with the very prominent (for this record) keyboards. Certainly the most attention-grabbing track on the record. Coming up: Totem is maximum 90s alt rock, and then the one-two punch of Neil's worst lyrics of all time with Dog Years and Virtuality.
I like this song, but I do see that it's not one of their strongest ones. It's almost there and has a lot of the qualities you find in Rush songs and is good, but it doesn't have that special quality that makes it one of the ones they would want to pull out on a regular basis.
Definitely one of the better songs on the album, plus notice: another triple meter arrangement. It's as if Neil came in from his Freddy Gruber sessions with a new rhythmic exercise to use on a song. This is also an example of Geddy's vocal harmonies being used for positive effect, instead of just beefing up his weakening chops. My only gripe is the backing keyboard on those angular melodic fills. The texture just seems very out of date.
Always thought this was an interesting song. Musically, one of my favorites on the album. What I don't like about late-period Rush is mainly Geddy's vocal melodies - or lack thereof. The well ran dry at a certain point. They began to sound flat and uninspired.
Wow, had not heard that one in a long, long time. Forgot how bizarre it was. Nice. My favorite off this album was always Half the World... love it when Rush tries to do a short pop-song, pretty damn rare.
The amount of riffs is positively dizzying. I think the keyboard is extraneous and pointless. I could do without it. Here is where I hear the influence of Victor on Alex’s playing front and center.
This was my favorite song on the album for years and still probably top three
After TFE, there are heavy Alex guitar songs mixed in all the way to CA. I like the the juxtaposition of the heavy/not heavy in this song.
I'll say it again... Heavy and spacey! Chaotic solo! ✊Gotta love this one...
Progressive stuff to the 10th power. I love how Geddy's bass sounds like a ball rolling into its hole at one point. Ingenious. And that Alex solo...
in their ENTIRE catalogue EASILY one of Rush's greatest tracks
Little late with a comment here, but this really grabbed me after not hearing it probably since the 90s. Really enjoyed it. Had some flashes of Porcupine Tree-esque stuff. Really cool overall.
Now we get into the *really* good shit on T4E! “Limbo” and “Dog Years” yo!

Well and test for echo too they've played that on subsequent tours
Not keen on the first two tracks, but the remainder of the album is brilliant
Do you ever wonder why they had such a short shelf life in the live sets?

I always got that Double Agent vibe when first hearing this one.
That had never occurred to me but i reckon you're spot on.
I am also heavily drawn to both of these under rated tracks
Agree 100%!
I've not heard this in decades. I can remember the beat and tempo of this song was perfect for long drives looking out at American along the road.
Hands down my fav on this album. Followed by Driven. I do like the switch backs between the heavy and lighter sound. Good stuff.
Yep. Good tune.

I did enjoy the contrast and color. The song immediately took me to a place that took over, I like that.

Constant changes and transitions do not automatically make a brilliant song. It's just as likely to ruin a composition, as we see here!
This is indeed the best song on the album and also the best thing they did after Signals. There I said it.
Clockwork Angels
The music contrast is driven by the lyrics.
Best song on the record, great. Best part was the going back and forth between lite and heavy.
