    I live in New Zealand and major species that are having an impact on the environment are mustelids (Ferrets, stoats and weasel). These three species are another major contribution to the extinction of endemic bird species of New Zealand

      @@theflyingdutchguy9870 Yeap that's correct. I'm trying to get into conservation I'm New Zealand. Almost completed my degree and have done volunteering up North. Its was ashame stoats weasel and ferrets were not mentioned in this video. To me that is a big miss in people the RUclips community aware of the destruction mustlieds have here because in the U.K they are protected because they are native. Ecological role is important to retaining sustainability in biodiversity. Mosquitoe fish are becoming very abundant here too. Carp populations are becoming isolated. More abundant in Hamilton and Waikato. We have the Asian catfish and I've seen one huge specimen in Auckland at Western Springs. I couldn't get a photo so there are still none official reports in Auckland but they are more abundant than predicted. I agree with you on the rats. When I go trapping ship rats and Norway rats are the top predators being caught. Stoats are intelligent and recognize the traps. We have to change the baits constantly to get them. I'm happy to share a species list with the youtuber here. Sorry I forgot username.

    As someone who lives in NZ, the main 5 would be rats, possums, ferrets, stoats and weasels, as they all kill native NZ birds. There are heaps of other invasive animals but they don't do much damage, the NZ government is just really cautious. Also cats.

    Great to see you back! I have a suggestion for you, if you'd like. I think it might be cool to examine which freshwater fish would thrive in a saltwater setting (theoretically, obviously), and which saltwater fish might be most suited to take over freshwater environments. For example, how might a school of giant groupers fare in the Great Lakes of the US.

    I did the Queen Charlotte track near Picton and the second morning as I was heading out, I came across a possum with its leg stuck in a trap, alive, staring at me. I set down my pack, found a large stick nearby(about as big as my calf muscle) and said "sorry buddy" and crushed the little guys skull; it didn't even really twitch. I picked up my pack and kept going. Very beautiful hike.

    If people would keep their cats indoors then they wouldn't pose a threat to birds and other creatures. I have 8 cats who never go outside. It's safer for the cats because they get preyed upon by other creatures, too.

    • @leefi1
      @leefi1 3 года назад +2

      I absolutely agree with you. If you keep an "outside cat" you don't have a pet. What you have is an invasive, destructive animal that you feed, and sort of care for, enabling their destructive behaviors to continue. They are nuisances to your neighbors, and will haunt bird their feeders for prey. I, too, have always had cats, but never have allowed them free range outdoors alone. Outside in my fenced garden, yes. But, NEVER alone, and able to leave my presence. I like animals too much to ever allow my cats to have access to kill and maim them for their amusement.

    No one will listen to me, but my educated solution is to introduce wedge-tailed eagles to replace the extinct Eyles's harrier. It died out because humans exterminated its prey, but New Zealand now has medium-sized animals for large birds of prey to hunt again. This is the best land solution in my opinion.

    Well I saw a while back what they do in Australia with the feral cats. Their way is probably the only way to handle that problem. In the U.S. all pet owners ( breeders it’s different) are supposed to neuter and Spay their cats or dogs at a certain point for reasons said above for example. Also, wild feral cats who aren’t euthanized by animal control here will get spayed and neutered then released back into the environment.
